Can't get outside to shoot because the gnats are exceptionaly bad this year. They seem to just swarm me, while don't bother others nearly as much.My wife can stnd by me and they hardly bother her. (I know, she's sweet while I'm ....)And I do shower daily !!!Must be something to do with body chemistry.
I've used Skin so soft, off, Cutters, Bug off, Absorbine JR., Vinilla ,etc. Nothing works very well.
What works for you ?
100% Deet
I use a Thermacell, swear by them.
I read somewhere that if you spray Listerine around the area they will stay away also, but never tried it. Ive also heard that placing a dryer softening sheet under a baseball cap will keep them away.
I'll second the Thermacell. Black flies have been bad up here this year and the just stay away from the Thermacell.
A little hint for anyone coming north for bear this fall, bring a Thermacell and plenty of refills. You'll never regret it.
Learn to blow out the side of your mouth like we do in south GA. Bug sprays don't really help down here when they're bad. Thank goodness the GA gnats don't bit like the FL ones do. Tge.
THERMACELL!!!
Thermacell.
dont use any scented shampoo or aftershave use nothing that smells at all ,,works here on WV knats
Pure extract of vanilla dobbed around on me and my clothing seems to help as do fabric softener sheets. We're having a rash of little bitty gnats in our area right now and when they go away the dang buffalo gnats will be here. Those things will leave an itchy mess. I saw thermacells at a major outdoor store the other day. Think I'll go tomorrow and get the rigging and try it out. I find it impossible to sit still in the middle of a swarm of gnats or skeeters. Bet I ain't the only one.
QuoteWhat works for you ?
A week of temps in the upper 80's to kill the little #&*@r's off.
I've yet to find a remedy either...
Uh, I'm embarrassed, but what is Thermacell? I thught it was a brand of self-inflating sleeping pad, seriously. Does it work on skeets and black flies? Where you get some? d
Old Dave,
Their site.
http://www.mosquitorepellent.com/
98% effective but the 12 hour butane cartridge runs about Six dollars. Kinda spendy but how can ya put a price on keepin the skeeters away.
Regards,
Dave
Yep, they work. And after a bad day or two feeding the skeeters and the blackflies, it'll seem cheap.
Get yourself a box of great big cigars.Light one up and puff til you have a four foot diameter cloud of smoke around yourself.
Might make ya a little green but the gnats should stay away.
John
thermacells are the best
Thermacells work really well but if your talking about same gnats that are here on the river bottoms by my house in Missouri they pick up the theracells and take it to there village. The skeeters are even affraid of them.
I had an old pair of trousers on one day that had the seam split around the seat; and I noticed the gnats stayed away from my face. :bigsmyl:
Anyone else had similar results? :biglaugh:
Woodduck, yes I have but I usually don't like to brag about it, :bigsmyl: Yes the gnats, little you know whats, have been bad around here. It seems to be worst after a rain when the grass is still wet. I hate em. BOB
Therma Cell, I wouldnt go in the woods without one.
I never did this; but I knew a couple guys that cut out the crotch of a pair of panty hose; put their head through it; the legs cover the arms; and then they put panty hose on the lower half of the body as one would 'normally'; and then pull another panty hose over your head like in the move 'raising arizona'.
Hunting clothes over everything....
They said the gnats can't bite through panty hose...
I never hunted with those guys again.
I sincerely apologise for the visual.
The skeeters are real bad here this year so I bought a fogger. Fill it up, plug it in, get up wind and wipe out the bugs. Works great til the next big wind blows in the next hatch but at least we get relief for a couple of days
Thermacell uses allethrin, a synthetic version of pyrethrin which is in some brands of insect repellant sprays. Pyrethrin comes from chrysthanemums so I suggest you plant flowers. :)
Thermacell will go through one butane cartridge and three repellant mats every 9-12 hours. Purchased in bulk will run $50 for ten cartridges and thirty mats which will yield approximately 90 to 120hours of operation. Therefore, cost to operate is approximately 40 to 50cents per hour.
It may not be the ticket for someone hunting out of a backpack for days at a time or for someone who is moving and/or hunting the breeze, but I can see some advantage for persons who are afield for short durations where the air is still and they remain in the same location.
Daddy Bear
The mosquito coils use the same active ingredient as the thermacell and cost about 20 cents a coil for several hours of burn time. They work very well. Garlic or garlic pills help a lot, too.

This is about the only thing I've found that works when you're moving around and can't sit by the Thermacell.
Just watch it when you inhale... ;)
thermacell is the bomb
