Terry: Here's a nice bighead I shot in the Des Moines River yesterday afternoon. I'm sorry I can't figure out how to post this stuff, but thought the guys would like to see it. Got it from shore and all on video too. This one is 24 lbs. I got seven this week over 20 lbs. Lots of fun. Yes... I'm a professional funseeker. Thanks. BW

Here's another one I got last week. This one went 28 lbs. Kind of like sinking an arrow into Amtrak going through. I got rope burns. BW

Nice Fish sir! Are those the flying carp I hear about in the Ill. River system?
Nice fish! What kind of fish is it?
Locomotive sport shooting. Pro funseeker is a good vocation. Way to set the standard for play.
Thanks guys. The way I understand it the fish you see on TV jumping out of the water hitting people up side the head are called "silvers". I think they only get up to like 15 lbs. max. These here are called Bigheads which are a sub-specie of the silvers. I guess we're lucky they don't jump as they get over 100 lbs. I sunk an arrow in one a couple years ago that I got a good look at that HAD to go over 80 lbs. I was on a steep bank on shore. I couldn't come close to stopping him. He apparently took my solid fiberglass shaft around a log because he broke the arrow in half right behind the fish point. They are originally from China. Supposedly, they got into the Mississippi River systems in the 1930s when a guys private pond washed out in a flood near St. Louis. bw
WOW those things are monsters.
Hey Barry are those things more for to shoot than huntin whitetails. If they were the ones that jumped out of the water you will need a 12 ga. to bring them down.HAHA!!
Very nice fish there, Barry! Well done and congrats!
Barry,
You are correct. The "jumping fish" are silver carp. What you shot were bighead carp. Lots of fun to shoot, and I hear they actually taste good.
I tried eating a couple 20 lbers last year. When you lay the filet back the top meat is white whereas the bottom half is darker meat. I just threw away all the dark meat. Not only was it not bad, it wasn't bad at all. Not real fishy/strong tasting flesh (although their outside slime is pretty robust) and no major bone issues. I'll say this, I've eaten store-bought fish that were much stronger tasting. I just tend to shy away from eating fish from major rivers that have any industry upstream. I guess I was spoiled with too many years of clear water fish in Montana. bw
Hey Barry, you have to careful being a professional funseeker. It takes all the fun out of it :smileystooges: Looks like you had a great time.
