I've been working on these for a couple of months and just finished them up this past week. I wanted to make some really nice footed POC arrows for an upcoming bear hunt. I contacted my friend Kye at Great Basin Footed Shafts who took over Rusty Watson's shaft footing operation(Rusty's Feets). Kye made me up a 1/2 doz. purpleheart and 1/2 doz. osage footed shafts. I'm only making the purpleheart shafts for this bear hunt. Can't seem to decide on a color combination for the osage ones yet. :banghead: So their still sitting on the bench.

The shafts were 62-65 lb spine and had a raw weight of 550 to 555 grain which I thought would give me a slightly greater than 600 grain arrow. Very straight grain exceptional shafting straight shafting. Nice lookin' stuff.

I applied 4 coat of gasket lacquer and let them sit for 48 hours.

Two coats of Fuhr white water base paint were applied for a cap that dried about 24 hrs between coats.

Crested with enamal cresting paints which is a little glossy. I then spray the crests with a satin Watco spray lacquer. It cuts down the gloss of the GL and seals the crest so it doesn't smear when shot into targets.

I then fletched them with some goose feathers that I had ground specifically for them. Four fletch RW helical 5" shields. Makes a very stabile arrow for me and goose holds up well in all weather conditions. Perfect if the weather decides to change for the worse. :) The only issue that I have ever had with goose is that the quill seems to be a little weaker than turkey on the leading edge. So I tried out some different materials to wrap the leading edge of the feathers that should correct this issue. I rolled the leading edge of the feather with a burnishing tool to flatten the out. The black is silk thread. The other two materials are nylon rod building thread from Gudebrod. I don't know the diameter but the stuff is thin and really hard on the eyes  They aren't as good as they used to be! LOL

Very nice looking arrows! Well done! ;)
Very NICE!
I've added that to the list of things I'd love to learn to do......footings.
Man, those are BEAUTIFUL!
Very nice!
Mike
Beautiful arrows. Excellent work. If you don't mind me asking what does a 1/2 doz. of those purpleheart shafts run? Skippy
Bear ought to be honored to be taken with one of those. Very nice.
Allan,
I would love to have one BROKE!! And bloody for that matter too. :D
Tim,
I've made several hundred footed arrows myself. Not very hard to do, but does take some time and practice to get good at. Learned alot by trial and error and talking with Rusty Watson. The man is a wealth of knowledge. Now I get them from Kye there. Saves me alot of time and he does a really nice job selecting and matching them too.
Thanks guys, dino
Skippy,
I am pretty sure that they were $7.25 a shaft either purpleheart or osage. dino
Does Kye have a web site or how do get in touch with him?
Dino, those are awesome, I want some.
I think they will make you take an extra second to enjoy them at full draw just before you loose it at a bear.
Very nice looking shafts and arrows.
Steve
SAAAAAWWWWWWWEEEETTTTTT...........
I like those, hwere can I get those shafts? Is there a web site?
Dino,
Were do you get your Fuhr white paint for your crown dip? How much do you have to thin it, and how many dips does it take you to get good coverage over the GL?
Thanks!
Jeff,
Fuhr is the the white water based sealer that 3R sells. Typically you don't have to thin it at all. I've been using it about 3 years and have only had to thin it a couple of times. Stuff is nice. No odor, dries really hard and covers in two coats most of the time. On rare occassions I have to put on a third coat, but it does not build up like the white gasket lacquer. I also use the clear Fuhr with paint pigments to make other color caps too. Good stuff! dino
Thanks!
