Title: Crappie fishin gone astray PICS
Post by: kennym on May 26, 2008, 06:16:00 PM
Went crappie fishin with my bro this AM,not bitin well, but the carp were rollin the bank. We talked about goin home(15 miles) and gettin our bows, but figured they would quit before we got back. Finally couldn't take it anymore and a carp hunt broke out!! Didn't get started till 2:00,but still shot several, biggun is my bros.He had 1 flop back in the lake .and I shot thru 1 into the weed roots and broke the line tryin to pull the arra out. Then I got to get wet cause it was the only arra I had with me. The bow in the pic is the one I built for my oldest son last year,he passed away early April, thought it fitting to take it today.

My bro,the carp hunter

After the shot, its hard to get the timing down on these shots!!

Now that's how you make the best of it when things don't go as planned!

Beautiful bow too - your son was with you today and I'm sure is very proud.

Kenny, I'm glad you got out there with your son's bow. Very powerful medicine. Shooting carp can take your mind off a lot of stuff!

Nice fish, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your son but I'm glad that you are carrying on and using the bow that you made for him.

Man, do I ever miss bowfishing. We don't have any carp in the Lake Region and NDGF puts a ton of resources into keeping it that way.   The nearest decent carp bowfishing from my place is 100 miles away at $4.00 per gallon...

Nice fish.  I am curious what some of you do with the carp you do take.  In Missouri, you are not allowed to catch and release if you know what I mean and I'm not brave enough to give them a try on the grill just yet.

The smaller ones you can score if you know how,I can't . The rest filet, chunk up ,put in quart jars with a tbl. spoon of vinegar and pressure cook. Almost like salmon. Also good fertilizer for the garden and stray cat bait....errrr food!

I was in college before I realized anyone made fish patties out of anything but carp!! That's no joke either. My Grandma used to put up 20 or 30 jars of carp and buffalo (the fish, not the mammal) every summer.

Drain it out of the jar, add finely chopped celery, onions, garlic, S&P, cracker crumbs and a beatten egg or two. Mush it into patties and roll in more crumbs. All that's left is fry to that "golden brown" you always here about. Pair it up with some hominy (I prefer yellow, but white is good too) or cole slaw (or both).

So good ya can hurt yourself eating too much!

These fish were spawning, isn't it late in MO? Seems like it is usually in turkey season........

everything was late this spring spawning wise even up in MN.  heard the crappies didnt come in real good on Mtwain up to almost 2 weeks later then last year.  Last year we hammered crappies while turkey hunting in the afternoons.

It's been cooler this spring, water temp has to get up into 58 degrees + or -. Looks like you had a great day.

The crappies we've caught had eggs in em as did these carp. The black locust trees just bloomed also, about 2-3 weeks late for all. Guess they're gunshy after last years late freeze! LOL
