So, last couple years I've been hunting with a recurve that belonged to my best friend before he passed. A couple days ago I got out my old longbow and started shooting it again. Really like the feel of it after being away for so long so I decided to hunt with it today. I had noticed when shooting at home that the serving was a bit worn and there was no real friction engagement with the arrow nock but didn't think much of it. This morning after getting set up in the stand it definitely became an issue because I almost dropped the arrow 3 times in the first 5 minutes of sitting. Just touch the thing and it falls off the string.
So what to do? First attempt was I noticed a string about 4 inches long dangling from a shirt cuff and tried to wrap a layer over the old serving but by the time I wound that little piece of string the ends were far too short to manage a knot. Redneck ingenuity to the rescue... I made a "shim" from about a1/2" square piece of oak leaf folded double so it's about 1/4" by 1/2" then laid it over the serving with the closed end forward pushed the arrow nock over it and viola!!! Perfect fit! It'll just go flying when I shoot but I bet I can find another piece of leaf if needed.
Anyway, I'm sitting here chuckling about it and thought ya'll might get a laugh too. Who knows, maybe somebody will be in the same situation some day and then it won't be just funny but actually useful!
Dave, dip your nocks in warm water for a bit then pinch both ears closer until you get the fit you like.
You may need to re-serve the string if the other serving is worn.
You wrap it with dental floss or dental tape both are quick fix,
Way to 'get er done' Dave.
