Title: Brace height recomendation
Post by: DanielS on October 22, 2025, 10:25:16 AM
Ive got a Damon Howatt Coronado. 48# at 28".
Appears to be an 1982 model. I pull roughly 29". What brace height ya'll recommend? Any hunting weight arrow build recommendations? Ive got some Big Jim dark timbers in 500 he recommended but didnt think to ask ideas on insert and point weight. They have 5" shield cut helical. Arrows are cut 1 1/2" longer than front of riser at 30 1/2". Regular aluminum inserts. Ive got field tips up to 200.
I have never set a bow up or tuned arrows. Where do yall thing it will fall, and where is a good start on the knock point?

I'd start at 7.5" and work up from there.

I agree with Burnsie re starting brace height.  125 grain points should work. Given your longer draw length and arrow length,I don't think you'll be able to go much heavier.  Maybe to 145 grain, but start with 125

I've read on the internet (so it has to be true) that a good starting point for brace height is the AMO length of the bow X .13, + or - 1/2".

In this case, I think the length of the bow is 60".  .13 X 60 = 7.8.  Pretty close to the 7.5" that Burnsie came up with.

Rule of thumb for recurves is to start at 1/8th of the AMO length and work from there.  At 60" AMO there is your 7-1/2".

Nice looking arrows. Will see how they shoot tomorrow. Come in around 435 grains with 125 grain head

I think Jerry is correct - with a 500 arrow at your draw length, you may be pushing it even with a 125 grn point. Keep the arrow as short as you reasonably can.

Well. Everything 150 grain and under is nock right. 175 settles in. Its kind of a toss up between a 175 200 and 250  grain field tip. They hit pretty straight. I have 3/4" of extra arrow to spare.
Brace is at 7 3/4. With 250 dead quiet with no silencers

But hey, I still dont know what in doing
Shooting into a Reinhardt block

This bow really settled in at 175 the more i shot it
Bow likes to be choked and good follow through kept me straight.
