Title: Feather noise.
Post by: Bonebuster on May 26, 2008, 10:32:00 AM
Bought a new chopper in the "Traditional" shape.
Cuts a really nice looking feather, about five inches long. The back of the feather comes to a sharp point, and gives a distinctly different look to the arrow.

I like it alot. Only problem is, it produces an arrow that gives a very noticeable "ZING" all the way to the target. Not a plus for hunting.

A quick snip to the back of the feather solves the problem, and makes it look more like a sheild cut.

I`m gonna fletch up my arrows with these for how they look, and snip them when it`s time to hunt.

That's how Howard Hill got Robin Hood's arrow to sound so cool!
I do the same in the field, when I need to fletch in camp. I cut the full-width feather once it is on the shaft, using scissors. Once along the top, for height, and once on the point in the back, not because of noise, but for finger clearance.

I have one of those choppers my son insisted we get one. I think it will be to late for whatever your shooting at to get out of the way.

I have the same chopper and love the shape but the noise I too thought would be a problem but I havent had any noticeable issues taking game with them so far. I think at reasonable shot distances you should not have a problem, plus they look cool. Just my two cents. I originally bought the chopper so i could stand out from the rest of the guys I shoot with since they all shoot shield and bannana and parabolic, guess i just wanted to be different.
