Title: Brothers of the Bow
Post by: Sean B on August 24, 2025, 07:20:34 AM
I spent quite a bit of time talking to Gene and Barry over the years to know that these two are really in it for the love of  it all.  The first time I really spent time talking to Barry, I showed him a bunch of pictures of bucks that my grandfather killed in the '30s and 40's. I remember him saying "Man i love this stuff", and you could definitely see his passion. Last year i bowhunted South Africa, Gene heard about it and called me before i left to make sure i knew what i was getting into and to give me a few tips on, not only the hunt but how to navigate the airports and stuff like that. Im proud to call them both friends and i was left with a little bit of a lump in my throat. Enjoy!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kugga1OXdns&pp=ygUJYXNpbyBnZWFy0gcJCRsBo7VqN5tD

Great video!  A nice tribute to these two fine fellas and quite a tribute to the whitetail deer as well.  I'd tip my hat to Gene and Barry but more appropriately, I'll just turn it sideways.

Imo the best part of this whole video and perhaps the part the resonated the most with me... The Wensels are legends, they've done so much yet Barry talks about guys thanking him. He's says that's great but he hopes that guy passes down. That to me is brotherhood outside blood. Awesome point he brought up

These 2 gentlemen are the pure essence of what deer hunting, and more specifically BOW HUNTING should be,  and how it should be passed on to the next .... in it's purest form.  You could not find 2 better hunting role models as either a new comer to bowhunting,  or as a seasoned hunter with many years at it. Now days,  information is just about too easy to come by.  You can scrape the internet and fill your noggin in a couple hours with pictures and theories and approaches to things,  opinions galore and all the fancy do dads and tech to get it all done,  but these guys opened to door for any of that info to spark an idea,  turn into a tactic or a product to do a job,  to even be available for your arsenal,  and THEY EARNED IT with boots on the ground, time on the trails and in the stand,  studying these things first hand and taking the time to document what and why.  That commands the utmost respect.  I'm always concerned that these days,  what people think bowhunting is and is all about, has been cheapened .... watered downed, streamlined like fast food and in many instances exploited.  I realize as time ticks on things change and the wheel is made bigger and better and I'm not blasting all new improvements,  not at all .........but we can't forget those who pave the way in life.  We can't forget where we come from and how we got to where we are at.   If you are a bow hunter,  you should know who the Wensels are,  plain and simple.  I have lots of wheel bow friends.  Most,  I've tried to get to give the recurve or longbow a try.   They usually respond with "I used to shoot one of those when I was a kid!",  as if they have moved on to much bigger and better,  or they say "eventually" or maybe at some point because they "can't afford" not having the 300fps and fiberoptic lighted sights with a mechanical release and all that jazz.   Can't afford what?!?!?   It's not easy to get folks to see sometimes,  with equipment, values, approaches,  the whole big picture with bowhunting specifically.  My young ones will know of Barry and Gene ..... they will have seen the footage,  hopefully read the writings .... and they are already shoot the stick bows and love it. Maybe coincidentally or because of all the great weather we've had,  I think they have shot every day since we returned from ETAR.  If they choose to hunt,  well,  I think they will have a good background of the history and the knowledge of what came before and be thankful for those who have made it all possible for them.
