Title: Stump shooting near Maple Valley WA
Post by: Northofspokane on April 13, 2025, 03:44:50 PM
I have been hiking and stump shooting after work near Maple Valley WA.  Around 4pm.  Great exercise and steep.  I would like to have some company if anyone is interested PM me.  I will post some pictures.  The best stumps I have ever killed, some real trophies..

I started up the trail not sure what would present itself for the first arrow but was soon met with this beautiful opportunity to stretch the muscles and send one. An old boy who had been taken over by new growth.

I am guessing if you have not had the chance to stump shoot in the Pacific Northwest you are saying no way…… it gets better….

The next big bull that presents itself still shows the springboard cuts when it was falled the outside tells us that it will charge if we make another move so we should probably be still and let it pass.

The next bull is an old man having survived years in the woods and the wind is perfect so I slip in for the shot it looks good but the big fella takes a step and stops allowing a follow up shot which finds the mark.

Ok yeah another stump with an arrow in it soooooo juicy.  I was shooting my new Saint Patrick Lake Longbow 65#s @ 27in.  Gold tip trad seconds with 50 grain aluminum inserts 125Gr adapters with 170 GR Ace Hex heads.  Resulting in 600 grains total weight, a bit light for the bow but that is another story. I now have over 500 arrows through it and am really pleased with the performance and shoot ability of Eriks bows

Went back out tonight for a great hike and around 50 arrows shot.  Took the lighter bow 61@27 Saint Patricks Lake LB shot woodies.  Had a tip come off deeeep in a stump so was glad I brought a backup.  Won’t post pics as I am sure at this point you are all sick of pics.
Respectfully

The picture is taken just a few yards from my house, in a small patch of various deciduous trees. The rest of the woodlands around here are spruce…
But please, keep the pics coming… love to see where others are roving.
This is from a little walkabout yesterday…

It looks just like Alaska around Fairbanks. What are the bow hunting opportunities there?  I assume Moose and carribou.

Here in Norway, stumps are the only thing you can hunt with a bow. Rifles and shotguns are what the hunters use…

Good morning Chris,
Richard here and a native of Spokane. I moved to Olympia after college to teach school in Shelton and have lived here ever since. Nice photos of your stump hunting trips! I used to hunt the monster stumps on the Olympic Peninsula years ago, and also up the Wynochee Valley and over on the coast up the Nemah River valley. Great sport! I always used bows in the 60+ pound range, but those days are gone as age creeps up on me. Keep your photos coming...they are much enjoyed!    Richard
