Title: Carp Pie - anyone try it?
Post by: nchunter on May 20, 2008, 03:50:00 PM
I saw the recipe for carp pie in the June/July issue of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine.  (To whit: throw carp fillets, an onion, and a dollop of sour cream in a blender and purree, then pour into a pie crust and bake.)

My first reaction was "that sounds really rude!"  But on second thought there's probably a lot of foods that seem gross to the uninformed until you try them.

Sooo, has anybody tried it yet?

Give it a go and let us know -  seems to me it's got to be better than a "Cow Pie"

Nope and am not going to try it.  I read that too and was like this isn't fear factor man!

Let me tell you there is nothing wrong with smoked carp.  That I have eaten a lot and like it very much.  Great with some soda crackers and beer.  You can keep the pie.  I like apple or peach.

Oh I forgot that it really reminded me of the SNL Bass O'matic.  "Take the bass yes the whole bass and drop it in the bass o'matic"

You got to be half starved from wondering in the woods for 2 weeks to make that thing look GOOD! It would be better used as bear bait in my opinion...sorry all you carp pie lovers...just looked bad!

I like salmon pie and tuna stuffed baked potatoes so carp pie can't be too bad.

It's a good thing that I would probably have to go 500 miles south of here to find a carp or I'd try it.

And no thanks, please don't send me any.

This is walleye, northern pike, whitefish, and brook trout country-and unfortunately water that is not conducive to bowfishing.

I hit a stumbling block right out of the chute. I tried to filet a carp once. I just couldn't do it. Couldn't figure where the bones stopped and the meat began. Other than that, it sounds kinda like a tuna casserole, a dish I place slightly higher in palatability than raw monkeybrains.

Seems like about 68% of you guys don't like it and 47.2% wouldn't try it.  And 74.23% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

So what happens to all the carp that are taken?  Seems kinda wasteful to toss something you shot.

No, I'd never try it. It may, however, be a good substitute for stinkbait for catfish.

Ya know, after this thread, I'll never, ever look at another pie the same way again!

It doesnt sound to good to me.A few years ago I met a guy who told me he was going to cook up some barbecue buffalo ribs.Buffalo the other white carp meat!!! I had to say it was something new.I went home and dug some out of the freezer and put them on the grill that nite and barbecued them.WOW!!! they were good!!! So I would have to say I might have to try it.I would rather use buffalo than the german carp.

It is when carp is on the other end 8^).  Make sure you slit their bellies first so they sink to the bottom.  Great food for turtles, catfish and other bottom feeders.

I tried to fillet one once it was such a bloddy mess of mush that I didn,t bother. Many other critters eat them beside's using them for fertilzer and not to many don't swimm away when released.

Speaking of releasing here in NY there's laws about putting fish parts back into the water within 100 yrds of shore.Shot fish while still swimming are considered fish parts.DEC will issue tickets depending on where you are. Before that it was legal to throw the left overs from filleting a days catch off the end of the dock...bait fish would feed off it in turn bringing in bigger fish....somebody complained and now ya gotsta load it up and carry it out further

OK, what's wrong with a pot of black-eyed peas with boiled okra???
Maybe a few jalapenos thrown in the pot a pan of hot cornbread...Huh?

Carp tastes pretty good, a lot better than bass.  And, deep-fried "gar-balls" are tasty...as long as you eat it hot.

Too many people lead sheltered lives!!!   :scared:

Back in highschool I worked a cattle ranch during the summers. The spread boss was a mexican that didn't speak English real well. Awesome dude.

Anyhow, his wife made us burritos everyday. Us high schoolers would always pitch in with the funds, and made sure she got a little extra money for her troubles. She always kept us fed wonderfully well. She made by far the best authentic burritos I ever had nor will ever have again. It would be very hard to find a better cook then that lady.

One day it was "fich brito" day. Man let me tell you,......We stuffed ourselves on those baby's. Best fish and buritos ever! Period.

I asked, "Hey, Cisco....What kind of fish is this? It's out of this world good!!!!"

He said, "UUmmmmmmm...Catchum down reever." (caught them in the river.)

I says, "Oh.... Catfish. Yes catfish is good fish."

His reply, "C, senior.....Some catfich....Mostly the beegger whans tho....." (Yes, some catfish. But mostly the bigger fish. 'meaning carp')

They were deliciouse burritos. For the next couple of summers I would go to the river and catch a cooler full of carp and take them to Cisco so his wife would fix us Carp burritos.

My mouth is watering just thinking about them!!!! I took her some bass once to try in her recipy, but they weren't nearly as good as the carp ones.

As one of six kids growing up in the post depression era we ate a lot of carp, and jack rabbit. Carp out of fresh water are very good flavored, just need a lot of time to pick the bones.. I think it is Joe Tesh (sp) in Omaha that sells tons of carp every year.. Pretty much standing room only every noon, or at least use to be..(he scores them and bakes them, a procedure I have never mastered) Oh by the way can you say Mrs. Paul's? I can guarantee you that isn't walleye in those patties, and some fish sticks are darn good.
Jack Rabbit,, I would give a weeks wages for a meal of grandma's hausenpferer (sp)

Ironically enough, carp were first stocked in this country as a food source. But as someone who was raised on walleye, perch, crappie and bass (yes, that was before everyone went C&R), I just can't bring myself to eat a carp.

Even with the fancy plate, fancy wine and garnishments it still looked like a slice of crap pie in the picture. Carp are found in the nastiest sewer laden creeks and ponds around here. There's no way I'd eat one. I don't even like to touch them when I mercilessly shoot them. I try to jerk the arrow out of them when there almost to shore(quick release). I've been shooting them a few times a week and I've noticed alot of the regular brown carp and some that look similar but don't have very many scales in this pond by my house are they a different variety of carp?

You forgot the last part of the recipe. After you puree the carp concoction you throw that part in the garbage and stuff the pie with some red and delicious apples, cinnimmon, sugar and honey.

Well, after reading through all the posts here, I kind of hate to admit that I've not only eaten carp "pie" but even liked it.  A buddy of mine canned some and made fried patties out of it as well.  As good as any salmon patty you ever had.

...I know, I know... what's a salmon patty, right?  Ask your grandma.  She can explain it better than me.

Do they look like this? If so, they're a type of what's called a mirror carp, which is basically a genetic "fluke" of the common carp.

There,s a shop in New Zealand where they sell possum pie's. Never tried them myself but my motto is dont knock it until you have tried it. They are using carp here in Austraila by gridding them up to make fertilizer for farm's.

As a kid I tried carp from the Green river in Kentucky. That's been a long time ago but it didn't taste any different from some other fish (that I can remember).

Later, as a teenager,I noticed that the hot spot for catching carp in Evansville, In. was at the waterworks plant on the Ohio River. The carp were feeding on the sewege that flowed into the river and people lined up to catch them. Since then I have not eaten carp, nor have I had any desire to.

Carp are survivors. They may be a good food fish in the right environment, but they can thrive in some pretty nasty water.

Seriously, Carp is good eating, have had it several times, the trick is to cook it right to get rid of the bones.  Anyone know how to cook it right to get rid of the bones?  Have heard of smoking them, frying them, pressure cooking them, would like to know how in detail so I can start using what I shoot.  And by the way Gar is almost as great of eating as crappie.

Here's another carp recipe for ya...

*NOTE:  Only do this on a grill, over an open fire.  Won't work in the oven, or on a burner.

1.  Filet carp just like any other fish.  Electric filet knife with heavy blades recommended!

2.  Carefully sandwich filets between two pieces of cardboard, and place on grill.

3.  Turn often.  DO NOT OVERCOOK!  If the juices quit flowing, your cardboard will dry out and a fire will result!!!

4.  When meat is just done, throw carp filets back in river and eat cardboard... It'll taste better!!!

How's that for an old Missouri River recipe???     :smileystooges:

Curtis I just wrap the carp in bacon and grill it,then throw the carp away and eat the bacon.Someone said earlier that carp was better than bass    I need to invite him over for fish.If I could get a filet out of a carp I would probably  try carp pie.Notice a glass of wine is instructed to serve with this meal.If i do try this recipe there wont be a glass of wine left for the meal.I'll drink the bottle while preparing to eat the meal.

Be very careful, bottom feeders tend to absorb lots of the toxins in the water body that you are fishing in. Mercury and PCBs are in most fish but if it is around a duck hunting spot you got lead to worry about as well. I used to eat lots of fish from my area until talking with a wildlife biologist from Cornell. Stick to eating varmints... squirrel burritos, yum.

We've all seen the TV shows and videos recently of the carp jumping out of the water slapping people up side the head. I'm told those are a subspecie of Bighead carp called "silvers". The silvers get plenty big to wake you up, but the true Bigheads get huge. Thankfully they don't jump because they get over 100 lbs. I shot a half dozen of them last week all about the same size, but all over 20 lbs. The biggest went 28 1/2 lbs. Last year I fileted a 20 lber out for the first time. The lower half of the main filet is darker meat whereas the upper is white meat. I cut/threw away the dark stuff and fried up the white meat. The result was a little surprising. Not only was it not bad, it was not bad at all. No bones and no strong fishy taste either. It was better than some  store-bought fish I've had in the past. No lie. bw

In Europe carp fishing is a big-time pursuit. they have special rods/reels and baits for them, but they are caught in clean rivers mostly.

A carp is like a vacuum cleaner bag...it catches most of the junk outofthe bottom of whatever body of water it lives in.

If its a clean, closed body of water with no industrial flow, or sewage, or septic tanks draining into it I can imagine it is fine fish to eat.

I won't eat them out of Lake Lanier though, with 5,000,000 gallons of treated sewage spewing into it each day!!!!

Utah Lake has 7.5 million of them, I have killed hundreds but never eaten one, I can only eat a 8oz. fillet every month because of PCB pollution if I wanted to. Even if they were full of omega 3, lycopene and other antioxidents, and promise to remove wrinkles I would have to have someone else clean em. I cant stand to touch em. A Good Elk Gut pile is a walk in the park compared to those ugly things. It could be a swimming rideye and still I dont think I can clean one.

Sewer rat might taste like pumpkin pie, but I am going to take somebody's word for it...  I have eaten carp in the past out of deep, cold, clear lakes in Wisconsin.  It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that good either.  Crappie, bluegills, bass, and catfish find their way into my freezer.  Those carp get donated to the turtle-preservation-society.
