My wife started shooting a few months ago. We are planning our first archery shoot / camping trip this June but I think she is going to need some more arrows. I made her up 1/2 dozen 1816 aluminums to start but I am not sure if that is where I should have started.
Her bow is a 52" Shrew Longbow 28#@24" and she draws 24". The bow has a 450+ string on it. As some of you know I dont shoot carbons but I am thinking this might be the route I should go with her arrows because I am having a hard time finding the smaller diameter aluminums. So what would you guys recommend as far as arrow shaft and what length. I would like to stay with 125 grain points. I was looking at the Heritage 90 or the Axis 600 but again I am not a carbon guy so I am not sure. I looked at the arrow charts but they are not much help in this bow range either.
Thanks in advance for your help.

1616/1716 she is on the cusp of the two. 1816s are too stiff especially for that point weight.
1616 have a deflection of 1.079 so the 600s and 90s are going to be stiff is my thought.
Tim, I think even the axis 600's would be too stiff. We are working on the fine tuning of some arrows for my son's new Shawnee: 42@28, he draws about 26. Epic 600's with aluminum insert and 200gr head cut to approx 28 seem to be working good so far. I don't think you could make 125 work with that low poundage even full length.
I know there are some other carbons more geared toward target shooters that should work great for that light of an application, but couldn't offer you a recommendation. You may want to take a look at the Easton Redline 780, 900, and 1000...I think these would be much closer than a 600 spine.
Good luck, let us know what you discover.
my wife shoots a bow that is 25#@25", she pulls about 25 1/2. she uses a gold tip youth arrow(i think its called a lighting) we have them cut at 28" and with a 125gr. tip, shoots pretty good

Going by what Vermonster says you might try the 1000 Carbon Flash.
5/16 cedars should be able to get you there.
Thats what I make for my children puling about the same weights
They shoot recurves though.......
he's 30@28 drawing about 23-24"
she'd 26@ 28 and p[ulling about 24"
You might want to take a look at the Beman Carbon Flash shafts. They're available in light spines (750, 900, 1000, 1200) and they're a lot cheaper then Redlines.
I think Redlines have also come down in price a bit this year. I've seen them for $86 CAD a dozen which is about the same price Axis shafts are sold for. I thought they were over $100 CAD a dozen last year.
Thanks for all the tips guys. I found some lighter weight alum., carbon, and woodies so I will just need to decide which I want to pick up.
I have arrows. Send pictures of wife. Maybe we can make a trade. Thanks.

Tim,
I've got my wife shooting 1716's @27" w/125grn. points. They fly like darts. Trouble is, like you said they are getting harder and harder to find. I my switch her to carbons too.
John the only problem with that is she's like the stock market. Her value depends on the day!! :goldtooth:
She sees that Tim and I do believe you are in for a serious market crash of your own.......
Thanks for thread folks. I am trying to do the same type of set up for my girlfriend.
Anyone try sitka?
Tim,
My daughter shoots 24 inch long 1/4 inch ramin dowels. I bought a pack of 24 at Hobby Lobby in Holland for $6.50. all but 3 were usable. She shoots them out of her AS kid Kaddy that is about 23 lbs at her 22 inch draw. They weigh about 300 grns finished with a 75 grn field point and shoot as well as any shaft she has tried - we have some 24 inch carbon (lightnings and rangers) kids shafts and some old fiberglass kids shafts and a few 1716 aluminum that we have tried.
Thanks for the heads up Blaine. If your not busy tomorrow night I think me and a buddy are going stump shooting off Van Buren tomorrow night.
Yeah I hear ya Dave. Thats why I dont let her on Tradgang!!
Tim,
What time and where - email me. I may be able to make it, maybe with kid or kids if they want (or are not otherwise busy). I'll have to pick up a small game license to make myself leagal.
Sent you an e-mail Blaine.
hey tim what about some 3555 tx hunter shafts
Wives can be tough, use the same arrow you would use for elk or other large boned thick skinned game - that is as heavy as possible with a razor sharp two blade.
Shaun, Thanks for the tip. I just need to work on my stealth tactics now. They really throw you off with the eyes in the back of their heads!!
My daughter shoots several bows that draw 30-35# at 24. She uses 1516 Easton Jazz shafts cut to 27" with a 125 gr point. There is no screw in insert for that small of a shaft, but the shank of a standard screw in point fits neatly inside the shaft. I just hot glue the points in with no type of insert. She shoots 3D with me about every Sunday and she has never had a point pull off in a target. If you want the ability to screw in the points the half-out inserts for easton redlines fit perfectly and can be epoxied in.
