Title: Tuning conundrum
Post by: buckeyebowhunter on February 01, 2024, 11:00:02 AM
I have been bare shaft tuning for a long time and consider myself fairly proficient at it. However a bow that I've been shooting recently is giving me some frustration. I'm thinking it's my form causing the issue and not the bow but wanted to see what you guys thought.

The issue is when I can't the bow. If I hold and shoot with the bow perfectly vertical I get a perfect bare shaft. But when I can't the bow I get a hard left kick. Same thing with feathers. Vertical bow, prefect flight.

The bow is way lighter than what I'm used to shooting, so maybe my heavier bows have just masked an issue in my form? Perhaps I'm inducing torque on the string when I cant.

Thanks for your opinions!

Try canting while maintaining the magic T rather than just tilting the bow.  Simply tilting the bow to cant changes the geometry of the shot and could result in the problems you mention.  As Terry says, “archery happens from the waist up,” and your shot shouldn't change if the geometry of your upper body doesn't change.  I believe Terry discusses this in his instructional video, although it's been a while since I’ve watched it.  Or, you can check out this video for a good discussion of the magic T: https://youtu.be/HiQG9Jbqr0E?si=_3OMwc-SMFwxwbrr

I agree with Dave.  Keeping your upper body/head/arms in the same configuration is very important.  Similar to bending at the waist to shoot drop hill, etc...

Your having a similar issue I have from time to time learning to shoot lighter weight bows. I finally realized when I shoot the bow “straight up” I have more of an open bow hand. But when I Kant I tend to grip the bow more which I have been told causes arrows to go left.

Taking notes! I suffer from this at times also..seated shooting seems like it does not show up though..bend at waist..the things that slip the mind whilst at full draw.. :knothead:

I am transitioning to lighter bows right now....going from 60# to 50#

I know for sure that my release was able to be sloppier at 60# than 50#......

Thanks for the replies, I feel like if I really bury my hand into my anchor I get a sloppy arrow flight. Never noticed any sloppy flight with my heavy bows. So I'm assuming it's 100% my release, and like Dave said probably not great alignment when I kant the bow. Just gonna have to work on it.
