Any interest in starting a running thread with pics of small game harvests? I brought home a grouse here in interior Alaska this weekend. First kill since breaking my shoulder last year, it's great to be out hunting with the longbow again.
The story: I was out scouting moose hunting areas, around 6-7 miles down Mystery Road, a dirt road/trail many miles out of town, with a friend. We were on 4 wheelers, covering a lot of ground. Going around a corner, I almost bumped into a small bull. He bolted and ran down the trail in front of us for 50-75 yards. Soon after, driving a little slower, we jumped a single grouse and it disappeared, we had no idea where it went. A few minutes later, 4 spruce hens flushed off the road and landed about 25 feet up in a tall spruce. All four stood in line, left to right, beautifully silhouetted against the clear blue afternoon sky, like someone painted them there. About 20 yards away and up, it was a nice clear shot, and I hit him square with a 2018 xx75 and G5 small game broadhead. The other three didn't fly. My hunting buddy shot a 2nd one with his Henry .22, and the other 2 flushed and disappeared. Those were the last grouse of the afternoon. We enjoyed the rest of the day out on the trail, mapped a few spots as possible hunting areas, and ended up racing back to the truck, trying to outrun a storm.
Please post some pics of your successes!

Some good shooting and good eating. I learned to hunt going after small game. Not only is it fun but can be done with others of like mind without worrying about spooking the game like Deer. Lots more shots as well especially if you’re trying to hit them on the run or in flight like Pheasants. Brings back of great memories of my younger days.

I'm headed out this weekend for grouse... but in the meantime, here's a picture of the first 2 kills I ever had with a trad bow. And one was at 18 yards, believe it or not!! I was hunting a large field on the side of an industrial park outside of town, good times. An old picture, from around 2007.

Congrats, just curious what your bow is? I like the looks of it!

At moose camp, we cut up the grouse we kill and roll them in whatever we have. ( all dressed up potato chips works great.), and we deep fry them. Oh man… 😁
Here’s a picture of my first ever bow kill at moose camp.

Kinda what I'm doing now....can't move from this phone, and I'm just waiting on a call....board so thought I's share in this fun I had Monday afternoon...
Just wandering around my grandfathers house waiting for the gas man to show up and fill up the propane tank...wandered by shop n tractor barn and what do I see....a host of boring bumblbees....
Yep, made me wish I'd had my bad-mitten racket that I use on them at the house .....when it dawned on me.....I got a bow, flu flus, and a Clark's head in my car. I didn't get to go this weekend and test out the head on chukar, so here's my redemption...
What a blast this was, most shots were from 5 to 8 yards....not going to tell ya how many I hit cause you probably wouldn't believe me anyway, but will show you the ones that I found, or at least the parts that I was able to find....Some had the head missing, and other's the abdomen....and one had both missing as I only found the thorax.
Hitting a bumble bee is much easier than finding it afterward...a large majority are never seen again cause you have no idea where they went....just a 'pot' and a vanishing act...

As good at it worked on bees.....gotta figure it would work great on birds of the smaller variety... and seems to be a very durable head cause it got shot into the ground a lot as some of the bees dove from fighting, and they made great targets buzzing low about a foot off the ground trying to re-group...and those were a bit easier to find.
Flu Flu shooting is just too much fun.....been a long time since I felt like a kid at Granddad's house....but at 47, I might as well have been 12 again cause that's how I felt.
If ya don't have flu flus....you are missing out on some of the simple fun.
-
Not to overstate the obvious, but it's a heckuva lot harder to hit a squirrel at 20 yards than a whitetail. :archer2:
Keep 'em coming...these are great! :bigsmyl:

Small game is where the fun is......Mostly Fox squirrel - Rabbit -ground griz this way. Most of our native bobwhites =Gone sadly...non native Pheasant=mostly Gone.......Grouse all but gone ...some in isolated areas south in the heartland....
Due to loss of habitate & farming (and yarding) practices (herbisides/pestasides/fencerow clearing/urban sprawl etc..) :readit: ...but those topics are for another conversation...... :saywhat:
Like many , I cut my youthful hunting canines chasing small game with bow & arrow , then a few years with my old .22- and singleshot 410 .....-and
then making my way back to the stick and string o so many years ago....It is how I will go out....bow in hand canines worn and tattered .... smiling........

Tony we had a group squirrel hunt in eastern Oklahoma and Father Griner shot two black squirrels, the only ones I have ever seen. Cool to see the one you got.

Thanks Gordon. Yes over the years I have taken a few black squirrels with my bow. I always consider them a prize take as compared to the gray squirrel. Here are a couple more that fell to my arrows.

Nice, Tony! I remember seeing your posts from quite a while back. Always enjoyed them.
-
Thanks McClean and Archie. Other than going after carp and other rough fish, going after stingrays is some real action on the water, not to mention they are quite good to eat. Here is one I took hunting with the great Rob Davis(deceased) that weighted 134Lbs. Believe me he put up a pretty good fight, but Rob with his experience, we got him aboard. Then I was able to get one of those coveted T-shirts that Rob gave out, only if you took one that was a 100Lbs or heavier. Prior to this one the heaviest I had taken was a 70 Lber.

-
Tony, you know this is a small game thread, right? A 134 lb. stingray might be considered big game. :biglaugh:
Well done!
-
LOL, yes Maclean I think you are right(laugh) he probably won't qualify for small game with that kind of weight, shuck that even heavier than some deer. Here is the 70Lber I took, which turned out to be a female. She was right at the point of giving birth, and we just pushed on her stomach and out popped 5 little stingrays. We put them in the water and away they went.

wood carver 2 on the Southern stingrays which are shown in the pics, we get the meat from the top and bottom of the Ray, where as on the Cownose rays we just get the meat from the top. But you can cook rays just like you would do just about any other fish, you can bake, broil and even deep fry them and seasoning them accordingly and they are quite good. As far as the groundhog, like you I have taken quite a few over the years with my bows, and yes some are much bigger than others

Thanks Terry for the kind words. I have been quite busy this summer, and I have yet to take a groundhog with my bow, but hopefully something will fall before hibernation. I took these 2 last year that were living under our shop at work.

No Worries Tony..... here in GA hogs are considered small game. Seriously, a small game license is all you need to hunt them.
-
Shooting Rays would be fun!
Since I became a senior, small game, some game birds, and fishing is free. Just need a drivers license as proof. We have 3 species of rabbits w snowshoe and jackrabbits the most common. I've shot the only cottontail I've ever seen. Maybe the last one?
-
Yes Gun Bowhunting for Rays is certainly a lot of fun. I have certainly enjoyed my pursuit of them. This here is myself and my best friend Jimmy of 44 years, and this is his only ray he have ever taken when he lived here in Maryland, he is now living in South Carolina

Yes Sojurn that beaver sure do count in this thread for small game. I have never taken a beaver. Here in Maryland you are not allowed to shoot them, but trap only. But I have taken some Nutria with my bow. They also were fun to go after with no bag limit.

Beaver do count! I can hunt them year around in Oklahoma but not in Kansas. This is what I call my $15000 beaver. I slipped down the creek bank and tore my knee up and had to have knee surgery. :biglaugh:

-
Always wanted to hit a quail on the wing. We don't have many quail anymore so I doubt it will happen. Nice shooting Terry. You to Tony.
-
Duane, the quiver is home made . Holds ten arrows easily.
-
Good shooting on those Chukur Gordon, and thanks Gordon. Going after pheasants with a bow is a hoot. Unless one is above average with a bow like Howard hill on flying and moving game, I am sure one would get more with a shotgun than with a bow, but man when you do, it is a sense of accomplishment. I have certainly taken a few pheasants with the bow, not to mention some very good table fare. Here is a couple I took in a cut over corn field. If you look at the pic of me standing there, you will notice one of the pheasants minus the head. Well The Traditional Bowhunters Of Maryland were having one of our past annual pheasant hunts, and i arrived late for the hunt and the boys were already in action. As I was approaching the group, they called out to me and said they have a bird that wont'y fly, it kept to the ground running. And it was quite wet that day with some standing water. I nocked an arrow and as I was crossing the cut rows of corn, this pheasnt took out running right down one of those rows, and without thinking about it, I came up to full draw and let right in front of her and its head and arrow connected and the broad cut its head right off, a total instinctive shot. I wish I had my knee high rubber boots because of the laying water. You can look at the pic and see my pants legs are wet from going through the water. needless to say we had a blast.

My smallest trophy was a yard rat on top of my block target at 16 yards. Don't think I took a photo!!!

-
Wow, Tony, you are small game terror with your bow! I have preferred small game over the years simply because with my schedule and lifestyle, it has been difficult to do bigger game hunts, and I'm not very experienced in that area... I usually have to be spontaneous when I get a chance to go hunting, and for short periods of time. I'm actually doing a moose hunt in a couple weeks, so there's that... but I have learned to enjoy and even prefer small game hunting. Lots of rabbits and grouse and squirrels, but I haven't taken pics!
-
Enjoyed the story Tony, thanks for sharing.

Thx Tony.... the mouse was a bird feeder raider in my back yard. I got on the roof to ambush.
I really wish I would have had Ray Hamond take a pic of the mouse I shot from lying on my belly under the deck that was on other side of the moble home. Ray was worried I would hit the water pipe running along the ground. I told him otherwise. That was the same weekend I shot the bumble bee out of the air and took 6 shots at hogs and connected all 6 times. The 6th shot was through a boar Ray had shot and it came by me carrying the mail. What a weekend at Ray's Hog Heaven. I was shooting out of my head that weekend.
Oh, but remember, instinctive shooting doesn't exist!!

Congrats and way to go Terry on that first ST. Jude pheasant hunt. Man, 4 birds, that is some good shooting with a stick bow. Thanks lefty for the kind words, and yes I do love to go after small game just as well as big game. I do believe in a way it can make you a better shooter. Until then everyone, Shoot Straight and Good Hunting.

Nice couple of Squirrels Two4hooking. I went to one of my stands on a sod farm that I hunt and have taken a good number of deer on there over the years. This one day when I got to the stand, I hooked my bow to the pull string and climbed in and pulled up my bow. Not long after I settled in I heard this noise and looked up above me, and this coon was in the same tree that I am now in and coming down towards me from above. I stood up and he took off and got over to another tree. So I sat back down thinking he was gone and to resume my evening vigil for whitetails. Well, let me tell I don't think this coon was too happy that I was in that tree. The next thing I know I am looking around and here is this same coon in another tree staring at me as if he wanted a piece of me, well that was it. If he had fully gone on his way, he would have gotten a free pass, so since I didn't like the way he was looking at me and the coon season was in and I already had an arrow knocked and when I stood up and he did not move, so I pulled back the Dale Stahl 2 Piece Longbow and let fly. The arrow went through him and landed in the sod field. So after I was done hunting I collected him, took him to my truck and dressed and skinned him out and the next day he was in my crock pot with some potatos and carrots, and he was quite good.

Crock pot was the best place to relocate that little bandit. Nice shooting!

I have more but not easy to find on my phone lol I wish I had a picture of the quail I took years ago with a snuffer. No it wasn’t flying, but I snuck up on them. Taken coons, opossums, squirrels, chipmunks. Drew feathers off a flying pheasant, but that was all. Missed many rabbit 🤣 I just love small game hunting!!

Nice going Kodiak Fan, looks like you like those Bear Kodiak bows. I also like and have some vintage bear Kodiak bows, and every so often I take them out and hunt with them. One of my favorites is this 59 Kodiak. I shot 2 deer out of the ground blind in the background with this 59 Kodiak, and while hunting from the blind the squirrels would be all over the place. This one came home with me and I cooked him up in a 2 quart dutch oven, and man was he good
