I've always shot longbows and have been thinking about getting a recurve. I want a takedown with decent riser mass, but not a boat anchor. Gotta have something dead in the hand, fast, and quiet. My draw length is 29", so I'm thinking somewhere around 60" in length and probably around 42# @ 28". I've been browsing the Morrison and Widow websites. What sweet 3-pc curves should I consider?
thanks, Greg
I like Bear t/d's
Greg, you know my answer to that one....if a feller of your taste and ability were to choose a recurve, I would say there is only one brand for the choosing (though he makes a riser that does both longbow and recurve limbs) :bigsmyl:
Give him a call and get you one sent for testing.
You going to Tannehill or my place June 7...no pressure of course...
I have tried a lot of takedown recurves and haven't shot anything I like better than my 60" Schafer (but I haven't tried a Blacktail). I like Morrison and Widow, just not as well as Schafer. The Schafer riser is reasonably heavy. With a 29" draw, you're at the top end of what Schafer recommends for 60".
After learning how to make laminated bows, one thing I've concluded is that all the ones listed above are incredibly good workmanship and value.
Hey Greg, how you been? send me an e-mail with your phone #....duck hunting accident with the old phone and lost all my #'s......we got a plan for JC's.... Don
Hey Greg
If you don't mind metal, you might try a Dalaa.
If you want to shoot mine shoot me a pm.
Greg,
Where have you and that tall guide of yours been all year ??? Hope to see ya'll again at JC's shoot coming up. I am with JC's post above..... You will not be happy with anything but a Morrison. I would let you shoot mine, but it is wrong handed for you ! JC can let you shoot his.

Zipper or Marriah Thermal. I find the Morrisons too small in the riser.
JC,
I've got a call in to him now. He was in the shop and I'm waiting for him to call me back. I will be at Tannehill June 6,7,8. I assume you are having a shoot the same weekend? I'm pretty much locked into Tannehill, I promised R.L. I would help in his booth and have some Mississippi buddies that we always get together with at the HH. Hate I'll miss your shoot, we really had a great time last year.
Don, I'll send you an email with my phone#.
Greg
JC,
My favorite would be a Dale Dye Trailsend. Smooth, quiet, dead in the hand. A real work of art with a wonderful grip.

I thought I better take these photos off of here, I would hate to get in trouble, don't want to cause the thread problems.

I shoot a widow PLX take down recurve Its 54 inch 54@28 its very comfortable as well, I heard alot of fantastic things about morrisons as well.
Greg, thought you'd moved to AK or something. I have recently got a Morrison and am very pleased with how it shoots. The mass weight is just about perfect(not too light or heavy). Also, on the other end of the spectrum, I have a Quinn Stallion that is hard to beat in both price and performance. I doubt you are looking for a metal-riser bow, but it is a sweet shooter.
Mark,
I've been really busy at work the last several months, so I have'nt been on TG much. Also, got interested in flintlock rifles and been spending time on a longrifle site. Good to hear from you. You going to be at the HH shoot in a couple of weeks? What are the specs on your Morrison? I've been meaning to give you a call. I'll give you a holler in the next day or so. I'd love to shoot your Morrison.
Greg
Greg, it looks more and more like I may miss the HH. I am pretty bummed about it, but there are some family obligations that may not be able to be re-scheduled. I am hoping to go, but it looks unlikely at this point.
My Morrison is a T/D recurve(pre-Cheyenne). It is 60" and 52#@28". It shoots very quiet and fast but I am still in the process of settling on some arrows for it. My draw length has increased to ~30 inches so I am pulling about 57-58lb. I think my Heritage 150s are a little weak, so I just got some mfx 400s that I plan on shooting. If I get to go to HH, I will have it with me and of course you can shoot it all you want. I will also have the Quinn, it is 45#@28 60".
You can't go wrong wtih one of these awesome bows.

I wondered how long it would take for you to see this and start giving me grief. :p
If my wife needs to know, I can handle telling her myself.
Quinn Longhorn Classic. For the price of anything listed so far you can buy two or three of them. They are great shooting bows made of top quality woods with impecable craftsmanship.
In this bow hunters mind the finest recurve bow made has to be the BlackTail ,fast smooth and quiet.

I was shooting my Bob Lee " Hunter " three-piece takedown that is set up that 56" 42# @ 29" it was shooting arrows at 186 fps and the arrow weight is 435 g. I thought that was pretty decent speed for that low poundage bow. And you can't beat the price.

Greg, I've shot the same old Bear B riser TDs for a very long time. The only bows of recent vintage that I've looked at, shot, and considered switching to were Morrisons and Borders, with a slight edge to the Morrison because of the grip. That said, there's a ton of good recurves out there with the qualities that you stressed. Good luck in your search. (Morrison, Morrison, Morrison) Grant
My choice is a 60" Black Widow PSA. I like the riser weight and the Asbell grip just fits me like a glove. That said, I've yet to try out a Morrison Cheyenne. I tried to get my hands on one a month or so ago, now I think I better wait till I got a little more money in my "bow kittie". I doubt you'd go wrong with any of the choices here, but I'd be sure to shoot em first. Just my $.02...Mike

I have to agree with JC. I have been shooting the Shawnee with the foam/carbon limbs and it is all that he says it is. To my estimation it is considerably lighter and more svelt than the Black Widow. I like the Widow's but I also shoot well with the boat anchor's. I know alot of the bows mentioned would fit your needs and I like them too but the Morrison's fit your qualifications exactly.
I have a Blacktail and a Black Widow PSA III with the same poundage. The Blacktail is 60" the Widow is 58". Very similar performance. The Blacktail is definitely a much smoother drawing bow and the Widow is a lot heavier weight wise.
Greg....Black Widows didn't get their reputation by accident.Go with a Widow and when you draw your first blood, you will be glad you chose BW.
Having said that, after all, they do make chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and Chunky Monkey ice cream for those with different tastes. For my taste, it doesn't get any sweeter than a Widow. Cotton
I'm a Ballistik fan myself. Just enough mass but definitely not heavy, and very fast and very quiet.
My draw length is about 29ish as well, and I shoot a 52" Bear kodiak magnum. It's not a 3p, but it is a recurve. :D It shoots fine and I like how quiet it is for a recurve. Plus with the small limbs I can shoot it easily while sitting flat on the ground.
