Title: Glue for leather/ seal skin to wood shelf?
Post by: RedShaft on July 28, 2023, 12:54:25 PM
I’m doing some tuning and want to try some different rest materials out. I need a glue recommendation for leather I can use on my wood bow. It’s a hunting bow and will be in some weather.
I don’t mind if the finish gets messed up under the rest. But I DONT want it to eat or destroy the finish to the point where moisture can get in. Thanks men!

If you’re trying out different materials I would use double sided tape like the carpet tape. It’s thin enough not to cause any issues with tuning. Then when you’re satisfied with the material use the barge Cement. As for the tape residue regular alcohol would clean it off so you don’t have any issues with the glue sticking.

Barge Cement...but if you can't find Barge any contact cement like Weldwood will work. That is what I use mostly for my leatherwork and adding handles and arrow rest and strike plate. It doesn't adversely affect Tru-Oil finish or poly finish.

Tandy Leather carries a contact cement for leather. I have used it with good results. It shouldn't affect the finish.  If there isn't a store near you, order it online, or contact cement at a local hardware. 3Rivers may carry a seal skin rest with the adhesive backing.

For testing  or everyday purposes , I would go with Barge(thin layers) or sewing double sided tape.  Both being easily removed with fingers.

:oLittle warning about duct double sided carpet tape (good stuff) ..BUT....it is ""NOT"" a tempary application product , and ....it ""WILL"" lift finish ...possibly  even the wood  fibers below the finish .

I've found double sided fabric tape (peel n stick fabric fuse)to work well as a shelf/plate material adhisive. Compatable with all the finishes on my bows. (always wise to do a test area first)Removes easily like barge cement when the time comes for removal , yet made to withstand lots of moisture exposure !

You can find peel n stick fabric fuse tape on line...and at most every store that carries sewing supplies.
Barge cement in any craft shop/leather departments---and on-line.

Best with your testing/quest my friend  :campfire:

I had poor luck with Barge cement I use double sided tape like 3M or some yellow colored kind I get at Menards stays on  better than Barge . Weldwood is way stronger than Barge.

Tim , If I might ask ;^)  How and to what are you applying the barge cement with issue  ?
Just curious as I personally have never had an issue  with it , and I have used it on a lot of different materials.
I also "believe" alot of bowyers use barge to adhire leather grip material to bows as well , so it has a pretty good track record .

Just curious ;^) :campfire:

I have used glue-stick with success. It is the kind that is sold in the school supply section at any office supply store or pharmacy. It comes in a little tube with a knob on the bottom that advances the glue stick -- sort of like a lipstick tube.

The stuff is great. And it is easy to find, and cheap. Plus you can give it to your kid to use for school projects m-- non-toxic, no odor.

Riverwolf it was many years ago I remember putting a side plate on with Barge cement and it came off . I use weld wood on my leather grips and they stay tight and a yellow double face tape that has string reinforcements to it like strapping tape  hold the strike plates on they dont come off If you have to take them off its difficult .
