I just received a 1/2doz 135gr STOS heads and tried them out this morning. The first impression is that they come with a tanto tip. Is that something new for them? I went to put one on a tester and there it was already. They fly great! Hit right where my field tips hit. They are keepers!
They started taking the needle points off them sometime in '06 I think. Great broadheads, always seem to fly laser straight for me too.
I hear great things about the STOS. Any truth to the runor they will soon be available in a Tanto tip and a Single Bevel?
Thanks, Peter
Peter, yes they are supposedly going to do a left hand bevel with potentially a right in the future. Their newer tips are not quite as "tanto'ed" as Doc Ashby likes, but they are easily modified. The 160gr version is definately the stoutest of their heads and very close to indestructible when you take the tip down a bit more.
Great heads, my quiver always has at least one.
JC,
Thanks. I may have to order a few!
Peter
JC, do you take off another 1/16" on the tip on both sides for the tanto?
I used the 145 gr version with the conventional bi-bevel on a goat and a fair sized boar. Lots of penetration on both animals.
Nice to get a BH you can use out of the box!
I'm shooting 160 grain STOS. Really did a job on an elk last fall. Mine must be older because they didn't come tantoed. I do round the tip though. Excellent head.
What exactly does "tanto'ed" mean? Tip clipped and rounded a bit? Anyone have a photo?
Might have to go back to STOS. Switched to Ribtek and Magnus for a better tip design.
I just sharpened mine up for my bear hunt next week. This is the first time I've used them. I've always shot Magnus II, but I think I'm gonna switch to STOS. They are an awesome head. I can't wait to put one through a bear. The single bevel STOS is gonna be one deadly broadhead!
Here's a tanto tipped STOS. They don't come like this but STOS takes off the needle point. I use a small file to take them down.

I'll e-mail it too.
Yup, slow bow has it....I do mine much the same way:

I love my STOS heads, they fly great and penetrate just as well.
Why do you alter the tip - has anyone had issues with them rolling or something if they hit a bone or is it something else?
Downwind, that is why the tanto tip is a good idea with any head. It gives a chisel tip that will prevent curling. Just a stronger tip....that's my understanding. Maybe someone else to add to this.
The regular 145 grain bi-bevel head has performed flawlessly for me on Pigs and a goat-lots of penetration.
A single bevel, and nibbling a bit off the tip and re-sharpening to a chisel shape would be added insurance on larger, tougher animals.
Bjorn, these STOS heads have a date with a bull elk this year! I look forward to seeing how they perform.
Shot nine animals in Africa last July with the 145 excellent heads.
Looks like the tip of a Ribtek.
I know I've put this picture up before, but it's of Doug Chase looking at a STOS that he single beveled with a tanto tip. I think he got them without any grind to start with. This part of the arrow was sticking out the far side of an Oz buff, out of a 70# DAS. Both of his buff had the arrow sticking out the far side, and they did go through some ribs.
