Hello there, back to archery after a long break.
I recently learned that AZ has a very early archery-only squirrel season which extends my hunting a couple of weeks to maybe, finally, probably not, complete the Mountain Small Game Challenge.
In the past 10 days I've been all over the map - compound or recurve, picked the recurve, ordered flu-flus, practiced with the old arrows I had on hand, disappointed how long it is taking to regain accuracy and blaming draw weight, today at lunch I bought a PSE 30# Razorback.
It is shooting the 29.5" or so 400 spine arrows pretty good (as far as I can tell in NW AZ wind) but when the brown truck arrives with my 31" flu-flus I hope to see some improvement.
My very narrow goal is: to take an Albert's, a Kaibab and a red squirrel between Aug 18th and September 1st.
I figure 20y would be my max, any tips for training?

Welcome, this simple sport can be a challenge.

Welcome back aboard. Good luck on your squirrel training, right now that’s my goal too. It’s about the only hunting I will be able to do as I have ready access to land right here, season opens Aug 15, watch out tree rats!

Welcome. We have the Max Hamilton shoot over here in Flagstaff July 8th-9th if you want to cool off. Few of us Trad archers over here. Most years we had to call if of due to fire restrictions. Maybe not this year! :archer2:

Welcome aboard.
Have fun with your archery! :archer2:

Flu-flus arrived from 3R.
They are 31" and shot a little better with the 100gr field points in the 29.875" 400s I already owned, but man-o-man I put some of the plastic bludgeons in and started absolutely drilling the bullseye.
I woke up before sunrise thinking that they must be heavier than 100gr but they weighed out at 101g.
Non-aerodynamicicity?
When the sun came up I screwed in some 125gr field points I had and saw an improvement but I'm convinced 150gr would be even more better. No shop in town carries any so I'll have to order.
In the meantime - can some archery smart person tell me what's wrong with stacking washers up between the point and the insert? Not that I have weighed a washer...
-
Not so sure I'm an archery smart person, but I can tell you that with my aluminums, I found that putting oversized washers on the front made it real easy to bend arrows. It makes sense... the leverage of hitting one side of the washer would be pretty harsh. So I'd think that would also potentially damage wood or carbon. But if you're using small washers just for weight... the only problem I ever had was that my tips wouldn't screw so far into the inserts.

Hey Archie,
I see the sense in that, the further the point sits out the more leverage non-90°-forces have to bend or shatter the arrow, depending on material.
On the other hand, more point weight would only come from an extension of the length (possibly width) of the field point or an increase in the density of the field point metal.
Is there somebody out there building field points out of tungsten or depleted uranium?
I suppose the short answer is that MohaveBill should buy the appropriate arrows for draw weight in the first place!

Yep... I quit using the screw-in rubber blunts because they bent my arrows, due to what I believe was the flexible tip sitting out in front of the insert, as opposed to the rubber blunts that just slip over the end of the arrow.
Guys use all kinds of ideas to add weight to the front of the arrow. I came up with some doozies, most of which didn't work well. But there's a few commercial options that probably accomplish what you're looking for, if I'm understanding you right. https://www.3riversarchery.com/buy/arrows/arrow-building/inserts-adapters
And by the way, welcome! I have learned an awful lot about trad bowhunting from TradGang.
