Title: Making a Lakota type side quiver, fur in or fur out?
Post by: Tajue17 on May 31, 2023, 08:02:35 AM
I found a couple nice deer pelts in my shed and want to make a indian style side quiver,  the pelts have the fur on so im curious fur inside or outside need opinions.

This is one I made recently. I prefer the hair out to help shed moisture when present and IMO looks better.
I put the seam on the lower side of this quiver so the hair was pointing to the rear and down for ease of moving quietly through thick brush.
Also, cut the hide from the flesh side with a sharp razor or you will have loose hair everywhere.
Are the hides tanned or just rawhide?

Just make sure the hair on the quiver runs the same as it did on the deer. Down the center of the back is the strongest part of the hide.   You may want to wet them and stretch them til dry to get the wrinkles out.

if you plan on broadheads being in it you want hair out, they will snag on the hair.
i made this one from a roadkilled fawn and badger fur around opening several years ago.
also has rivercane along the top to keep it from folding up, and fringe.

I have my Dad's Fallow Buck skin, and a quiver would be a great way to commemorate it.

This is a fallow deer Plains style quiver I made for a memorial set a few of us on Primitive Archer put together for this young man. His name is Patrick Brennan, same as mine and I met he and his Dad, Tom at a local trad shoot when Patrick was a pouty 9 year old. A few years ago Tom was stricken with a brain tumor from which he finally succumbed.
Here is a pic of Patrick with the fallow deer quiver...

To answer your question, Tajue, hair out and if you want a fur trim put it around the mouth of the quiver to help keep the arrows quieter.
