Post by: Tajue17 on May 25, 2023, 05:56:48 AM
Do you guys think i could take a left hand saxon recurve and have a right hand shelf cut in.   The saxons had a fatter than normal riser and im almost positive randy had one years ago on his table at etar...  it was my fathers bow and theres no way im shooting it left handed so it either lays there never to be used or how can i get this thing right handed.

Start shooting with a thumb ring and you can shoot it left handed.

Shooting with a thumb ring is totally different and you will have to retrain yourself to aim differently.
I think you probably shouldn't cut a shelf on the other side of that bow. Double shelf bows are engineered to have left and right handed shelf and extra strength is added when built.

Like pat said dual shelf bows are engineered from the start to be just that-You can take a chance but why ruin future resale value on a classic bow?

Shooting with a thumb ring a left hand bow becomes a right hand bow.
All thumb ring shooting the shelf is on the opposite side.

Tajue17 - Thumb rings are very specific to the person in terms of fit. I found that the Turkish or Arabian style thumb rings would not work for me because the middle joint of my thumb barely bends. But the Manchu thumb ring works fine for me. To get one that fit correctly I ended up making my own out of Bubinga. It took time and experimentation to get the fit right and to learn to use it correctly. There are videos on YouTube with helpful info. In my experience the TR provides a very clean and fast release. I now prefer thumb release over fingers.

Yes, with the thumb-ring type of draw, you use the right hand to draw and the arrow rests on the right side instead of left as in Western archery.  Arrow-on-the-left-side works with two or three finger draws because the pull of the drawing fingers rotates the arrow shaft towards the left side of the handle.  The reverse is true for thumb-draw.

Thumb rings are generally not perfectly circular inside or out, so commercial pipe of any kind is seldom a good choice to try and make a ring.  There are a number of makers of traditional thrum-rings of several different styles.

We (the Asian Traditional Archery community) generally recommend that someone start learning thumb-ring with a 20-30# bow, but you certainly can start heavier, you just have to work up to full draw.

If you PM me I can give you some links to Asian Traditional archery organization and suppliers who can help you, without violating Trad Gang rules about mentioning other sites and organizations...

You can also shoot the lefty right handed by turning your palm out hooking your fingers with the thumb pointing down…. Avatar Style  :goldtooth:  It will pull that arrow into the shelf prerfectly.

Is is going to be different that shooting right handed bows?   Absolutely!
