Title: Found some cracks. Is it safe?
Post by: gyzala on April 25, 2023, 01:07:21 PM
Hello guys, new here and seeking advice.  :dunno:

I discovered these tiny crack in the edge of the bamboo core in one of my laminated bows.
It is on the wall since autumn as I don't dare to shoot it since, and have other bows, but I am still curious if it might be safe to use as it was one of my favourites...

Does anybody have any experience with this kind of damage? Any thoughts?.

Cracks perpendicular to the backing is not a good sign because you don't know how deep they run.

About the only thing that can be done is to sand the edge to bare wood using 220 grit sand paper, blow out the sawdust, then use a water thin super glue and let it soak into the crack until it puddles up. Let it dry for about 10 minutes or so, then lightly sand the edge with 220 grit sand paper and seal it with a clear coating.

If you attempt this...... be very careful with that thin superglue... It can run everywhere instantly and ruin the finish on your limbs.... Use masking tape so it doesn't get on the limbs belly or back glass.

After doing that, you may want to let it set for a couple days in a warm temp before testing it....  It's either going to work.... or its not....     Kirk

I would do exactly what Kirk said.

Hard to tell how far the cracks go down.Probably shallow. Are thier any on the other side where the cracks are in the same spot?

Thanks for the advice.
As far as I can tell through the opaque glass lamination, the cracks are no deeper than a millimeter. No sign of cracks on the opposite side either.
