Title: Anyone using an Ultra Tab?
Post by: AlanF on May 12, 2008, 08:00:00 PM
Would like some feedback about the Ultra Tab by Back Forty Gear if anyone is using it.  Pros - cons etc.  Thanks.

I have one.

I am a nut when it comes to tabs and gloves.  I try all kinds hoping to find the PERFECT one.  All the tabs I had would kinda slide up my finger a bit after I released an arrow.  That bugged me, I wanted it to stay in place.  I was browsing around some archery sites and came upon the Ultra-Tab.  I thought it looked interesting so I called and get some info about it.  It wasn't but a couple of days and I had one on the way to me.

It is different looking to be sure, but don't let that put you off.  I think it is the best tab I have ever used.  When you put it on and fasten it, it STAYS in place.  It won't move up or down your finger when you loose and arrow.  You just grab another arrow, nock it and shoot without ever touching your tab to readjust it.  It only took me about 3 shots to be impressed with it.  The only negative I can come up with on it is the THICK leather pad that rides between your fingers.  I could see where it would bother some people, but after a bit I didn't notice it anymore.
If you were going on a walk through the woods to do some stump shooting or you were going out on a course to shoot decoys you would simply put your Ultra-Tab on when you were ready and you wouldn't have to touch it again until you were getting in the car to leave.

If you're like me and get aggravated at having to adjust your tab or glove after each shot, BUY the Ultra-Tab.  It is pricey, but it is very well made and looks like it would hold up for a long time.  You can tell that it's not hastily thrown together.
The guy that sells them is a really nice guy that is more than helpful with any questions you might have.  Give him a call.

Good Luck.

Guys here is a link to the designer's (Fred Cliff) webpage.
http://www.backfortygear.com/product/product.php
Fred told me via email that he now sells them direct for $36.50 same as Kustom King.  He has not yet updated his site to reflect the price drop.  Hope this helps.

I had one on pretty much all day at whittingham, got my 1st turkey with one, the only problem was when stalking a ground grizzly I shifted my fingers a little and it slightly squeaked on the serving, the savage beast ran to his lair

When I contacted him he didn't have any ready for shipping. He sold me his prototype. It's a medium, right hand. I would ship it for $23 if anyone wants to try one at a discount, or wants a backup. The leather is thinner than a SAM tab if you like more feel, but I still prefer the SAM.

Hey Nala, just curious the one thing I like about a tab is I can still use my fingers for doing stuff...like turning the focus ring on my binos, unscrewing the water bottle cap etc. With the Ultra being so solidly strapped on, is it still flexible for doing stuff like that?

Looks like a great design, wouldnt mind trying one out.

Hey,

Matabele, He sent me one to try that was a DEMO that he said had been used a lot and it was pretty flexible.  No doubt you could do some of the easy stuff with it still on your fingers.  The new ones, which I have, are pretty stiff and would take some breaking in before you would have any noticeable dexterity with your fingers.

I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll put my Ultra on tomorrow and get my binos out and try to focus them and then I'll try some other tasks with my arrows, nocks, opening a water bottle and so on.  I'll try and find as many things as I can to try out what you are asking and I'll report back tomorrow evening what I find.  My Ultra is pretty new and has less than 50 shots through it, I don't use it when shooting my longbow, it was only for recurve use.  I may start using it with my longbow though and see how that works.

Stay tuned for tomorrow.

I tried one,it was nice but it can feel alittle restictive to me.It's a nice design, but I went back to my Bateman cordovan tab.I feel tabs or gloves are a personal choice and fit.I've tried many of both from a Big Shot glove,SAM tab but always come back to my Beteman cordovan tab.

Mike,

I will see if I can get a few pics of mine posted. I sure the design could be replicated.
