These pitures confirm what I thought, Bocote makes a beautiful arrow launcher! Does this wood get darker with age, as I have heard this from some people?

Here's a Medicine Point Trails End I used to own in Bocote.
It has a Cocobolo center stripe.
Dale once told me 60% of his bow orders were in Bocote.
It is one of my top 3 favorites.

Bacote is oily and can create problems. I am currently sending a bow back due to the bocote. It is kind of light as well. I have seen problems with it on lots of bows. I will never use it again, but to each his own. Shawn

Mr Magoo, what's the dark wood in that bow?
I sprayed a bow today that has bacote in it and if this thread is still around in a few days I'll show it here. Otherwise, I'll add a new topic. Mike

Sorry to hear you had a problem Shawn, what was it? It seems like alot of Bocote bows get built so I wonder if anyone else has had a bad experience with this wood.

Here's a Earth Archery Ridge Runner longbow in bocote along with a bocote knife handle.  The oil in it made the handle hard to put on a finish.  (http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/SOS_321/000_0022.jpg)

The bacote pulling away from the fibergalss overlays or other woods it has been adhered to. It also has quite a bit of checking in it. It seems fine for venneers but I personally do not like it for risers. Shawn

Shawn, sorry to hear about your bow.Maybe your bowyer had a problem with a batch of bocote he had. I know that bubinga is a very oily wood maybe it wasn't dried enough? That Fedora I had was in perfect shape, bocote riser and veeners,And my hornes brushbow is the same wood combo as Hope and Faith only in a one piece you saw no ill effects on those bows with their bocote/cocoabolla risers?I have bocote veeners on mine. I like the way bocote looks on a bow . Maybe we can get some bowyers involved in this thread???Kenny that hybrid you made sure came out sweet looking!

all i could do is run to my local hardwood shop and buy those stuff.
if i enter the door, you know what they say?

hi andreas,another tradgang thread?

"uhm.. yes gimme bocote this time, all what you have."

now i have a locker full off hardwood, but

i just cant stand it.

Bacote is beautiful BUT it is more susceptible to moisture/humidity than alot of woods. When used in risers, I have seen it swell and shrink pending on climate. This gives it the sharp edge feeling wherever it is laminated any many people think it is delaming or coming unglued which is not the case 99% of the time. It does bother alot of people when this happens. This seems to happen no matter how well the riser is sealed. Just not my choice for a bow that would see alot of climate changes.

D Harris,

Likely my loss but most bows online can't accomodate my 24 inch draw with a poundage around 55-60. Besides the Silvertip should be here in a couple weeks-ordered last May.

Now I'm thinkin about ordering a cocobolo/yew veneer combo. Somebody help me!!

Alligatordond,

I hate to say it but my bow was 57# @ 25". Would have been a perfect fit. I paid $1330.00 and let it go for $890.00 when only 6 months old.

Straitshot,  I believe Jason made that bow himself.  See his article, "Anatomy of a Carp Bow" in The Bowyers Journal.  I believe it was in Traditional Bowhunter as well.
