A year or 2 ago Roy sent me a set of 6 Sitka spruce shafts in the 40 to 45# range. After finishing up Elg Bue I thought about a set of arrows specifically for her and when I went looking I found the 6 Roy sent me and they are just about right for Elg Bue.
The lase few years I have preferred making self nocks in the arrows I make and here is how I do it...
I start by making a single bandsaw cut, across the grain of the shaft...

then with a thin bladed knife I open the slots a little bit...

then with sandpaper(this is 80 grit) I open them a little more and shape them. I still have more opening and shaping to do a little later by folding the sandpaper over and over until I get the nock width that fits the serving on the string. BTW, I like my nocks to fit loosely on the string.

I decided to go ahead and add the crown color, the same as on Elg Bue and will fletch with turkey primary feathers.

As I continue I'll post more pics.

Your going to need a leather Quiver, you should be able to find someone to make it :bigsmyl:

Been thinking about that, Mark.

I added a red crest on either end of the crown color. Then rubbed down all the shafts with 0000 steel wool and eyeballed their straightness. A little hand straightening was needed as expected.

These are the tools of the trade. I made up the tile saw with a handle for ease of use.

With the sandpaper and tile saw I continued the work on the self nocks. I work the self nocks until they fit my string. Make sure all sharp edges are rounded and especially either side of the nock throat. I relieve that with the tile saw so as the bow is drawn the string has a smooth nock edge.

Then it's time for the sinew wrap at the nocks for support to keep the nock from splitting.

Once the sinew dries I'll seal it with TBIII then when that dries it will be time to seal the shafts before fletching.

Nice work Pat

Thanks, Mark. I got them sprayed with satin poly today. Maybe I'll start fletching them tomorrow.

I got the arrows fletched up today with fletch tape and sinew wraps, fore and aft...

I haven't cut them to size and installed the field points yet. I did use my Young feather burner to shape the fletching.

I shot these today through Elg Bue and they shot quite well. Did about 5 round. I was pleasantly surprised.
Now I'm working on a quiver for the set.
-
Very nice work there, Pat..

Thanks Pat. I luv build along pics.
I look forward to your quiver project. However, I must admit the beautiful greenery in in your back yard is quite distracting. We still have 30 inches of snow in our yard.
-
Well done Pat Those arrows complement your bow. :clapper:
-
Appreciate it guys.
I started on the quiver yesterday with a piece of hair-on, brain tanned deer hide I got in a trade years ago. This piece has to be a winter kill from somewhere up north because it has thicker hair than I've ever seen which also makes very difficult to hand stitch. Life is a bitch sometimes.
Bob, unfortunately I have to look at that view every day. :saywhat: :dunno: Actually Marcia and I feel quite privileged to be able to not see any other houses around ours for over 32 years now. That can really spoil you.
Roy, those shafts were perfect for this bow. Thanks so much.

Here is the quiver. What a pain in the a$$ stitching this with all the hair but I think it turned out OK.

Fine looking quiver! I like that native style, they work in so many positions.

Nice set Pat

Those kind of projects are fun. You did a great job on those arrows and quiver both…. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
The last dear skin quiver I built was from a Axis deer I harvested in Texas, and gave it to my daughter for a birthday present.
But I cheated, and took it to a saddle shop and had the sewing done on a machine. I’ll have to dig up the photos of that and post them some time.

Kirk, I'd like to see that Axis deer quiver.
Here is the complete set, bow, arrows and quiver...

Very good Pat.

Here is that Axis deer quiver I built for my daughter. The top fringe is mink.

Kirk, the wee lass looks quite fetching with her spotted quiver and spartan skirt and sporran. :notworthy:
