Title: Favorite 2 blade broadhead
Post by: TradPaul on May 12, 2008, 01:38:00 PM
Hey everyone,

Let me first start by saying thanks to everyone on this site that makes it so Personal, friendly, informative and motivating. I've been at Trad archery for short time, but feel that just by being a part of this community i have gained in inspiration and knowledge of this fine sport. Making friends as i go. Now it's not just me, but my beautiful wife and son are now making this a time of family, fun, and memories that will continue for as long as we can draw a string. Many thanks.

Now, the question:
What is your favorite 2 blade broadhead and why, and if you could, list your specific arrow/bow set up with weights included. Thanks.

Paul.

Since Iam a Bowyer and make all My own Bows, both Recurves and Long Bows, then My Favorite Bows are the ones I make, I cut down My own Trees and make My own Wood laminations, POC Arrows with 125 Gr. Two Blade Magnus B/H'S. Since I live in Kansas and the Magnus B/H'S are made here in Liberal, Kansas, like to support the Manufactures here. Plus you can't beat there Guarantee...ONE SHOT...  :)    :)    :D    :D

I'm strongly of the opinion that Magnus cut on contact broadheads are some of the best available of any style.  They are reasonably priced, accurate, easy to sharpen, and have a lifetime warranty.  What more could a guy ask for?

I shoot 125 grain Magnus 2 blades with all my recurves which are 50#-55# at my 28.5" draw.  I use a 29.5" 4560 CX Terminator Hunter, 3-4" vanes, 6" or 7" wrap, and standard insert for an overall weight of about 515 grains.

If I want more weight I use the same setup on a 29.5" 2117 XX78.  Total weight is 550-575 grains, depending on the vanes make/length of wrap.

My wife and I even use Magnus BH's with our compounds.  Her's are 2 blade 100 grains, mine 125 grain 2 blades or Snuffers...

Setting aside the Silverflames sat in my safe...I'm torn 50/50 between the Magnus I 135gn & the Zwickey Delta 135gn. Both fly beautifully, sharpen easily & are bombproof. Good width, strong tips & both look like a broadhead should look (getting nit-picky there!)

I'd list all my bows, but I'd be here all day! To keep it short, they're all around 60-66# at my draw & I shoot Beeman MFX 400s, full length with 100gn inserts & heads loaded to 210gn. Total weight is 670gn

Those 200gn Silverflames are mighty pretty though (As are the 185gn 1-7/8" MONSTERS!)

Magnus I 135g or 160g~tune easily, easy to sharpen, and 1.5" cutting width.

All of my bows both RC and LB are between 54 and 56lbs @ 28 and I draw 29" and shoot 11/32 cedars. Excellent penetration and bloodtrails.

For the past few years I've been shooting full length Beman ICS 340's (I draw 32") tipped with 125-grain Ace Standards out of various recurves and longbows. Total arrow weight is right around 500 grains. Penetration has never been a problem, whether I'm hunting deer, hogs, elk or moose.

I'll use either Magnus or Zwickey 2 blade broadheads. I shoot bows in draw weights from 45# to 59#, arrow length of 28 1/2" to 29" shooting from the left, & 27" to 29" from the right. Shorter draw right handed. Arrow weights from 500 gr. to 610 gr. or so.

Been using these heads for over 20 years & I have seen no reason to change.

Congrats on getting the whole family involved in a wonderful life long pursuit! You are indeed blessed. - Q.

Magnus I 135-grain 2-blade, or Zwickey Delta 4-blade.  I don't care for the bleeder blade design of the Magnus, but do like the Zwickey 4-blade design much better.

Both of these are my choices for that style of broadhead, and this is coming from a "3-blade" guy...  ;)

Simmons 190 Grain screw in Interceptors. My arrows are POC with 40 gr. aluminum screw in adaptors glued on.  This allows me to interchange my 190 gr. field points for the broadheads without extra effort.  Interceptors leave a huge entrance and exit hole and are strong, strong. The bows I shoot are mosty Hill style longbows -  60-70 lbs. with my draw length being 27". Arrows are cut 27 3/4 to allow for the taper fitting into the adaptor which is 1 1/2" in length itself making the whole arrow setup not including the length of the field point or broad head to be 28 1/2".

I will be shooting Magnus I broad heads for a long time!  I shoot a 52@27 Hill with a 29" Carbon Express Heritage 90.  The arrow weighs 600 grains with an 86 grain brass insert, 135 grain Magnus I, and 75 grain steel screw in adapter.

I have had best results with Magnus I or II. I bought a new bow recentlt and have not yet come up with a hunting set up . I was shooting (at the time of my last kill) 50#draw 550gr arrow,  125gr Magnus with adapter for a 150gr up front. I am considering a single beveled type BH this year with my new bow and probably a 2018 arrow. I'll be shooting 47#.

Haven't found many that I don't like. Magnus I, II, Stingers, Zwicky Deltas or Eskimos, Zephyers, you name it. Most two blades fly like darts and penetrate like nobodys business.

I really like John Teitzel's new beefed up Tusker Aztecs and Javelins- serious broadheads!

All currently available are flawed. Thus, I have no favorite ... yet. But thanks to the long and tedious work of Dr. Ashby, not letting uninformed detractors distract him from his science, we have not only hope, but promise of better broadheads than have ever existed before, coming on the market within the next year or so. In this small but important regard, we are living in an exciting time in archery history and all that's required of us is open minds and a bit of patience. Thank you, Dr. Ed. dave

I like Grizzlies and Rib Techs. Fly well, penetrate well and sharpen easily for me. I've used Zwickeys with good results also. Really it's just a matter of preference as there are many quality BHs out there. STO's I'm not familiar with but maybe I ought to be cause Todd be a whole lot bigger and younger than me.   :smileystooges:

My favorite broadhead would have to be a Zwickey
Delta two edge. A glue on Delta weighs in at around 135 grains. (With an aluminum adapter, around 170) I have used most of the common wide two edge heads, all with favorable results.

I currently shoot carbon arrows, that I squeeze automotive silicone into the insert end, until I get the arrow to weigh what I want. With a broadhead, my arrows weigh in at around 650 grains. Three fletch, left wing, sheild cut feathers. I love wood arrows also.

Unlike most of the people on this site, I own only a few bows. I am strictly a recurve shooter. I have shot the same Pittsley Predator for a long time, and I`ll buy a new one when I need to. At my draw length of 29", my bow weight is around seventy pounds. Way more than what is needed for what walks in Michigan, but it is what I like.

At this point, I would like to thank you for including your family in this special lifestyle choice we call archery. Including them is the best way to promote and protect my (our) favorite pasttime.

I've had great luck with mangus 125's+ screw in insert and stingers, no problem, but also made up some Ace 125 w/25 grain inserts. Flew great, spade the tip, very durable. I shoot them on carbons and they still fly like a drop of water.

I've been very pleased with the Ace Express 165's that I've been shooting for 3 or 4 years now.  They're a very tough head, sharpen well and hold that edge.  All the Ace heads seem to be very good, but I like the size and straight edge of the Express 165.  The makers, Bob and Jan Mayo are also very supportive of the UBI and bowhunting.  I mount them on wood arrows of 550 to 650 gr and shoot them from mid 50's weight longbows, currently a 62" Robertson Vision.

The Zwickey Delta would be a very close second if it was heavier.

I like the 125g Zwickey Eskimo - it's simple, sharpens very easily and flies very well!
I use Carbon Express Terminator Select 45/60's cut to 28", with a normal nock glued in and 4 x 4" Banana feathers. I use a 125g broadhead adapter giving a total arrow weight of about 600g. My bows are listed below....

Wow thanks for all the post's and info. I've been lookig all of these up and some of these badboys look very tuff and efficiant. STOS, Ribtech, silverflame all look tuff as nails and like they wouldnt stop for anything. Magnus, Zwickey, Grizzlies look pretty much the same as far as effiency and tuffness are concerned, which is to say that they look very tuff with a good angle of sharpening. I have read some of
ashby's reports and am seeing that many are going heavier in the tip weight, and that the Grizzlies have the best penetration, with the STOS close behind (correct me if i'm wrong)  So it seems that i might try some heavier weighted ones after i retune my arrows to take the weight. By no means have i figured anything out and always welcome advice....lord knows i need it. Thanks again everyone.

Paul.

I don't hear of many using them, but I  have great results with First Cut 2 blades.  Very sharp out of the package and a strong, thick blade, not hard to resharpen.  Have been using them with 45 to 50# bows and normally get complete penetration on whitetails.

Nah Dave...they weren't all pass throughs....I've jammed a few off side shoulders, and a couple of skull bases on follow up shots.  And even a couple of my side shoulders on those crazy wheeling TX deer that are broadside when you release, but severly quartering away when the arrow gets there.....

It just sounded good at the time.    :biglaugh:

ABSOLUTELY not the case for me. Wow!!! DW, jump right on in with a cannonball in the jacuzzi        , It is hard to disagree with success.    :notworthy:

I believe most game animals can be killed with any decent set up like 50lb with 450grains arrows and a sharp broad head.

However, Doctor Ashbey's reports speak with authority and have the data to back it up.

The formula has been put down in writing and stands as the bench mark for the best of the best.

Now if I'm hunting Javelina, I don't think I need maximum penetration, so lets blow a fat 160gr. snuffer from stem to stern.

However just like Terry said on thous fast Texas whitetails that duck and spin at the shot, if I hit it bad, I want it to never stop until its out the other side and some times that means crushing big bones.

The good Doc has done all the leg work for us and I might be a hard headed not to follow his sound advise.

So, as for me, I just worked up a wicked arrow concoction for Big game, A 65lb Habu double carbon Viper-con, smoking a 650gr. extreme-forward-of-center arrow with 360grains on the front and of course a modified Tonto tipped GRIZZLY.

I did get an exit on this one, but, it was just barely sticking out the other side.

I've not killed a hog with thicker armor than this one.

I hear ya Dave...but I've got my own data, based on over 2 decades shooting white tails with 4 blades.....so I have to be honest with myself, and dance with the one that brought me.

Not meaning to diss anyone's findings, but I'm certainly not going to diss my own either.  I've never hit a my side shoulder except in TX and I have  a recovery rate of 36 yards with 4 blade Zwickeys here in GA.....Like I said, I've been shooting that head for over 2 decades, and I stop counting whitetails kills somewhere around fifty....back before there was an internet.

There's only one shoulder I'm worried about, and there's no gurantee any Bhead is going to 'crush it'....expecially spinning bucks that are spinning so fast they are rolling with the punch so to speak, and taking energy away from your arrow.  Also, there is no garantee that if you hit the on side shoulder and do get through on one of them spinners, that you will get any vitals at those sever angles.

There's a lot of deer that you can pass through easily.....and the shoulder aint that big compared....and its not guarding much at certian algles either.  I've done a good job of staying away from it, and my broad head has done a good job for me.....no, I'll say and exeptional job for me.

Yeah....TX Bottle Rockets may requier something else...but that's not a guarantee either....but I have my thoughts on my set up next year based on my findings of how consistanly they move inconsistantly and exatcly where I'll be aiming.  Yeah, that sounds crazy, but I sure am tring to figure out my best odds, and I think I got a pretty good program for now on in TX. Wish me luck!

I'm sure you will stick to what you got confidence in.....and I wouldn't ask you not to.  I've seen your posts here, and I sure wouldn't ask you to throw out your own data.

Oh....btw...didn't mean to derail the thread...

My favorite  2 blade Bhead at the moment is the Sasquatch....and 2nd is the ACE Superwhatever (the WIDE one)

Rob, it was right at 3" where the broadhead went through.

This could go on for days, maybe years ( I think it has! hasn't it).

Each broadhead has it's own mechanical advantages, some are poo poo, others are OK, and some are the best of the best.

Like bullets for different game, I don't want to use a 22cal. for elk and I don't want to use a 300mag for rabbits.

Now that was funny right there Dave...

Since I can't get a Grizzly as sharp as a standard bevel, I'll go with STOS as my favorite 2blade mainly cause it's got 100% historical success for me. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot anything walking on this planet with a properly sharpened 160gr STOS (of course on the right arrow out of the right bow).

My next question is, why would a feller relegate himself to just one broadhead..where's the fun in that? So, for thinner skinned game, tied for second is the classic Pearson Deadhead, the Simmons Interceptor, the Simmons Treeshark, and possibly these monster Silver flames...

Now don't kill the messenger, I stole this pic from someone else, too scared to take a pic of mine cause I'm afraid they'll cut the camera lens lookin at em.    I'll see what they'll do this fall.

While I probably wouldn't shoot it at a hog, I think that 1 7/8" blade might just process the deer for you on it's way out the other side. And man are they sharp.

Did you get my email about the Habu?

I just acquired two new boxes of 2 blade Thunderhead 150’s and 3 extra packages of new blades.  I shot them back in 1989 and 1990 and they killed my largest bow deer.  I found them on **** and paid much less for them now then when they were new in the store.

I’m looking forward to hunting deer this fall with them…might bring back some luck I had with them years ago.  I was going to use them for turkeys this spring but opted for my 150 grain snuffers since they’re a bit larger in diameter and have an extra blade for those small birds.

Those silver flames look GIANT!!! like in a good wind they would come right back LOL. For me it seems to be a toss up and that i need to try several, I'm liking the Zwickey eskimos, Grizzlies, STOS, Eclipse, Simmons with the bleeder. All of you have had great success with your setup and that speaks for it self, but since this is such a fun thread, lets keep it up.
Do any of you use a grinder to sharpen you BH's, or is it the good old fashion stones?
Dave and Terry, you never did say what your arrow to bow set up is, i'd love to know what you all used to get such good results.

Zwickey, Magnus, & STOS.  I can't say I like any one of those better than the others.  They all have worked for me.  I use the Magnus on carbons and the Zwickey or STOS on wood.

Paul, I've shot the one 1 7/8" SF I'm using for practice in about every condition from dead calm to 30mph....they do not plane any worse than my STOS. Hard to beleive but they sure do fly well. Could be because they are the straightest head I've seen. It's also pretty darn sharp after going through my rubber broadhead mat 50 times or so.

I sometimes use the paperwheel system on my grinder for 2blades, gets that wicked mirror polished edge. But sometimes, I file sharpen...and it works just as well to me...but that's a whole nuther thread there    :biglaugh:

Opinons are going to vary...and personal/anecdotal evidence is very convincing to each guy. Thankfully, there's lots of choices out there for us to choose from. That's why you'll typically find a 2blade, a 3blade, a 4blade, and a blunt in my 4 arrow quiver. Sometimes I'll even choose which broadhead on a whim because the specific models I use all have 100% success rate for me. Same for taking a different bow in the woods...if proven it will probably get a replay until it fails, or my taste may just change. Right now, I like all the heads I own to a degree, with no clear "perfect head under all circumstances"...though I'm tinkering with slotting my STOS heads to add a very flexible spring steel bleeder and that just may be the perfect broadhead for me.

This thread has been fun.  My favorite two-blade head? A sharp one!  I've shot Grizzly, Zwickey, Ribteks and Magnus mostly.  Now I've got a bunch of Ace broadheads.  I like 'em all, have complaints about none of them.

I will say this, when I first started sharpening my own broadheads (22+ years ago) I got them sharp enough to shave, but not "hair-poppin'" sharp.  I hope you all know what I mean when I say that, as to me there is a BIG difference.  I started out with no "trad" mentor and pre-internet.  Figured a bunch of stuff out the hard way.

When I finally met someone who showed me a better way to sharpen broadheads, my blood trails became much, much easier to follow.

I would say, judging from some the pics you all are posting, that your broadheads are more than just "shaving" sharp.  I do believe, all else being equal that sharpness is much more important to serious blood-letting than number of blades.

But, as Terry mentioned earlier, that is from "my" research.  What does "your" research say?

Stan

It is good to see a thread, that lasts this long, with-out everyone getting bent out of shape and getting there feelings hurt....Especially with a subject like this......StanM and Terry are correct and "hit the nail on the head" about "my" research, a person tends to stick with what works for them.....A great example of this is of an elderly gentleman who went Bass Fishing with me recently on Lake Guntersville...He had Never fished here before in his life and he asked me what the bass were biting. We were doing very well on Spinnerbaits for the first few hours of daylight.....I ALSO TOLD HIM THEY NEEDED TO BE ANYTHING THAT WAS SHAD COLORED....WHITE, SILVER, BLUE, ETC...THAT WAS THE BEST COLOR BY FAR...well he showed up with a COTTON CANDY/PINK spinnerbait tied on...I told him no way would that work....I tried to loan him a GOOD spinnerbait.....He absolutly kicked my butt catching bass and good ones....he said it was the only color he owned it worked everywhere....So much for me knowing everything  :knothead:  I guess this could apply to broadheads also....but I'm sticking with Multi-blades Myself  :)  .......DAVID, HERE A FEW MORE...... Pete,

Thanks for the info on the set up, 170gn head with 47# is hefty indeed. No wonder you got such great results. I'm shooting 50# with a 175gn and am concidering going up on my tip weight. What do you find is a good range for this arrow with the tip weight your using? i've talked to a few people who are using a setup similar to yours, and they were getting a lot a drop around 20 yards. thanks again.

I just got some Ace 125 standards.  Boy do they sharpen up great!!!  Sharpest I have ever gotten a broadhead.  I even cut my finger the other day with one and I have never done that with any broadhead before.  I had some trouble sharpening Ace 160's years ago.  I don't know if they have changed or I have just learned to sharpen better.  The bevels did seem to be better out of the new package.   Not knowing that I did buy the Tru-Angle files this time also.  Once you get the proper angles set you can use a DMT diamond benchstone or a steel to finish them.

No fair, where's the fun in espousing such a sensible broadhead theory? Now I have to go back to a 2,3,and 4 blade each in my quiver....

Ace Express 165 for me.  I like the width, length and weight plus they are tough, sharpen very well and hold the edge, plus they are made right here in IL.  Bob and Jan at Ace also support the bowhunting community very well.

Bear Razorhead, Zwickey Eskimo, and most recently the Delta with bleeders. I hope to get my first trad deer with the Razorheads and then use the Delta 4-blades.
Now I just have to kill something  :)  (Come on turkey season!)

I"m betting on the new Silver Flame XL. It's the only head you can spend the summer practicing on 3d targets and it's still sharper then most new heads!

Kingwouldbe,

What was the actual set-up for the complete end to end pass through used on the whitetail.

I would like to see some specifics if would care to provide.

Please note correction from previous 1st request.
The buck was a whitetail instead of a muley.

I used to love the big 160 ribtek. Devastating hole, flew great and easy to get good and sharp.  Have a few left but they are startin to get hard to get.  Love the big Zepher Sasquatch, with or without the bleeders.  Recently purchached some Zwickey No Mercies after some research (160 gr screw in) and am lookin forward to givin them a test drive.  Bob

My blade of choice is the German Kinetic 180gr. Silverflame. They are VERY expensive but are scary sharp and stay sharp. I shoot a Sarrels recurve, 49# at 29" and use Vapor 2000 carbon arrows with 3gr/" weight tubes. GK is coming out with the Silverflame XL this month. These heads are 1.5" wide instead of the 1 1/8" cut of the regular Silverflames and I am eager to try them out.

Weeeellll, since no one has mentioned them...The Ashby single bevels for me. Haven't killed any deer with them yet, but I've killed probably 20 somthing hogs with'em. They are a revelation when it comes to penetration, of course, before I had them I used Zwickey's for 15yrs or so... they worked great too. The reason for lots of different broadheads is there are lots of different bowhunters. Pick the one you like, make scary sharp and go smoke a pig or thirty. It works for me. The Ashbys are currently my favorite though.
