In an effort to get the ball rolling with a carbon arrow test kit, I've put the following shafts and points together for a "kit starter" ...
(http://www.tradgang.com/rob/carbons.jpg)
All arrows pictured are 29" long as measured from the nock throat to the shaft tube end - feathered arrows use a 4" left wing 75x105 4-fletch.
From top to bottom -
AD fletched tapered Trad Lite w/alum ferrule - 347 grains
AD fletched tapered Trad w/alum ferrule - 377 grains
AD bare tapered Trad w/alum ferrule - 360 grains
Beman fletched ICS Venture 500 w/100 grain brass ferrule, 333 grains
Beman fletched ICS Venture 500 w/alum ferrule, 256 grains
Beman bare ICS Venture 500 fletched w/alum ferrule, 242 grains
Screw-in points - 100, 125, 145, 175, 200 grains.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RULES
1. Shoot the arrows into a worthy butt/backstop so we don't break or lose any to the testing process.
2. If there are others wishing to use the kit, the kit must be mailed out to the new tester within 10 days.
3. Use this thread as the running list of users - first post, first served.
4. If you can, add a carbon arrow to the kit! Arrows can be any length, fletched or unfletched, and must have a screw-in adapter in order to vary point weights. Please add your arrow data to the arrow data sheet contained in the kit.
I'd like to try them in a couple of weeks. I have a couple of new-to-me bows that came in the last few weeks and my Whisperstik should be here by then.
Could I put in to be the third or fourth person on the list??
OK, got the arrow set in today, thanks Jamie!
And a big "Thank You!" to Rob for putting these arrows on the road for us and Brock for adding to selection with the GT 5575's.
I'm getting ready to head out for a weekend of baseball with the girls, but I did go out and try a couple of combos. I'll complete testing next week, keeping a log of what shoots well out of which bow.
In the meantime, I did string up my new 56" Mojostik and got a couple downrange. It's 58@28 and I draw it to 27" or so, so figure 55# draw weight. First up were the Archery Dynamics w/ 250gr up front. Total arrow weight 640gr, by my scale. This gives me 11.64gr/# of draw weight and was a great combo. If I draw a moose tag next week, this combo is a definite contender, along with my 800gr maples. For deer, it's a bit much, and I decided to try the Gold Tip 5575's that Brock of Bull Mountain Archery had added to the selection. Again with 250grains up front, for a total of 542gr, darn close to an even 10gr/# at my draw. Again, these flew like darts. I was even grouping well out to 30yds, bareshaft included. This was with no adjustment to my brace or nock point, so I'm pretty tickled.
I'll try other combinations in my other bows next week, but I think I found a couple of winners for my Whisperstik. Again, a big :thumbsup: :thumbsup: to Rob and Brock for sending these out for folks to test without buying a dozen first.
VERY GENEROUS INDEED!!
Though I do detect a "slight prejdice towards those of us belonging to the Grass Stained Knuckle Society.." Alas that is the price of being perfect...shorties won't let us play.
OK, I ended up trying just about every combo on 6 different bows and I'll be staying with my woodies, for the most part. However, Thanks to Rob's GT 5575's and Brock's thoughtful addition of the 250gr field tips, I ended up buying some carbons for my Whisperstik Mojo 56" recurve. I had an early Father's Day gift card from Cabela's thanks to the in-laws, but they didn't have Gold TIps fletched with feathers. Turns out their Stalker Extreme arrows were available with feathers and were a dead match for the GT's in both deflection and weight. Here's a group shot from 20yds with the Cabela's carbons set up with 250gr tips. It's hard to see, but there's 3 arrows in this picture.
I'm not sure what the FOC is, but it's way forward. Total arrow weight is 540gr.
The arrows will be headed out to Dagwood 64 tomorrow. Thanks for the chance to try these out and learn a bit about carbons.
