Title: Any businesses that make fletching from turkey wing feathers?
Post by: flntknp17 on March 05, 2023, 06:45:53 PM
I have wing feathers from about 20 turkeys and I was wondering if there are any businesses that will take feathers and make fletching from them?  I feel like I read about a person/business that did this in the past, but I can't remember where I heard it.  I do have choppers and have made a few hundred fletchings myself, but I just don't have time these days to finish all the feathers I have and I like them so much better than commercial fletching.

Any leads are appreciated.

I think if it were me I would rather have full length feathers that have been split and ground than feathers that have been chopped, because everybody necessarily has their chopper set a little different than everybody else, so the chopped feathers are going to be a little different from the ones you chop yourself.  When I make arrows, I consider the time it takes to chop to be insignificant, probably less than 5 minutes to chop enough feathers for a dozen arrows, and I can decide myself whether it is worth getting two chopped feathers out of one full length feather (usually it isn't, but probably your feathers are better quality than the full length feathers I buy).

I notice that 100 full length white feathers from 3 Rivers costs $76.  Anyone who would be willing to split and grind your feathers for that price would be earning their pay, I think.

Josh Ectkerling (sp?) is listed in the sponsor classifieds.  He'll grind one wing and keep the other.  I.e., if you have say 100 left wing feathers and 100 right wing feathers.  He'll grind either wing for you and keep 100 of the opposite wing.  Or, if you only have one wing, he'll do half the number you have and keep the other half.  I believe hje will also chop them for you if you want.  Though I've made jigs to grind them myself, when i have more than i want to do, I've also had Josh do them for me.  He does a fine job.

As mentioned above, Josh Echterling/Wild Fletching (used to be feathers by the dozen I believe).
