I won't be building this year since I retire from the AF soon and I need to get my life together. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier. I will, however, sub in if someone needs to drop.
Thank you to everyone for signing up and keeping this thing going. I am honored to organize this and thank you for placing your trust in me once again. Please give me feedback at any opportunity, especially if I'm messing something up. Can't fix it if I don't know!
-
Running a bit behind but y'all should have your matches soon.
Edit: Matches are out, check your PM's. If you owe me information get it to me ASAP please!

I've started, but usually start at least 5 times before I get one in my sights...
-
Didn't happen wifout pichers:)
-
Maybe on the fifth start, right now I’m pleading the fifth ...
-
I actually glued something so maybe......
-
What yer fingers?
-
I'm gonna build something out of leftovers, at least that's my current plan.

-
It could happen!! :biglaugh:
Travis, those are nice looking leftovers!!
-
Well I am starting on the form in the morning. I have a few sheets of luan in the shop that will glue up into a nice form. I still am undecided on the wood choice. Either dyed curly maple or figured katalox, both with g10 I-beams.
-
Went wood shopping today. Got some Zebra Wood and some other stuff for myself.
I believe I am going to build 2 bows for the challenge and let the board pick the bow that goes to my victim.
Both will be beamed, hidden under overlays and a possible beavertail grip.
One bow will be some very curly maple and Bolivian Rosewood. The 2 combos accent each other very much.
The other will be Zebra Wood/Bubbinga. Maybe Zebra Wood/Jatoba if I have enough Jatoba left.
Then I will keep the bow that does not go for myself!
-
Well I'm excited to get started. Never had a 'victim' before! :biglaugh:
My hunting season ends this Sunday and I promised my wife I would take it easy for a week with her until I disappear to the garage in the evenings.
The plans are to do a couple of cosmetic touches I have never done like mosaic lines and footed veneers. I've got a new recurve limb profile that has a tighter static tip that I will be using. I have a new to me Jet Mill/Drill that I picked up a month ago, so I will also be milling out an adjustable riser to optimize the limb pad angle for the new limb design.
Looking forward to it and everyone else's progress.
-
Here’s today’s progress , guess I don’t have to do anything for a week now ... :biglaugh:
It’s hard to tell but there is a method to my madness. Oh the poor victim... lol

You can see the dot of CA on corners to hold together while I sawed both at once.
-
Here’s today’s progress , guess I don’t have to do anything for a week now ... :biglaugh:
Hey, don't you go being a bad influence now mister!
-
Finished the new form with a few sealing coats of paint. Once it’s cured I have an angle iron frame that will keep the form as straight as can be expected for Louisiana.
Who doesn’t hope to nail the correct stack thickness on the first run of a new design? The reality is I will probably be making a couple bows from the form before building the “swap bow” and nailing the correct weight and draw.
-
Anybody have a link to making mosaic accents? Never done it but they always add a bit of bling...
-
Kenny, I think someone explained how they did it in the 2020 or 2019 bow swap thread. I will look when I get home from work if you haven't found it.
Edit: Found something. Some instruction and some pictures on how Dave did one.

-
Thank you Sir!!
-
Kenny, one thing I learned when I made them is to position them so the seams aren’t in the deepest part of the bend. Mine weren’t and they would break. I didn’t have enough length to get the long section into the deep part of the bend so i couldn’t use them.
-
Thanks Travis!!
-
A little progress started ...

I pirated Brushwolf's accent except I went with char awood in the black part. I think the phenolic would be blacker but I don't really like to put non wood materials in risers anymore. They seem to not shrink/expand like wood. Even if wood is dry when you build it...
-
-
Looking good ole timer.
What's char awood?
-
Its the blackish gray laminated wood. If you were in the swap, I'd use different char wood... :shaka:
-
Sorry that weren't nice ... :saywhat:
We love ya bro. :wavey:
-
Took ah smarty pants pill didn't cha?
 :wavey:
-
Kenny when you cut the curves on the riser block what blade are you using ?? I like it so far.
-
The blade I always use, a 1/2" x .025" 3-4 tpi
It's about as tight as I can do with it.
Which is ok cause without sanding jigs its a PITA to fit pieces. Much worse than a slow arc...
-
Second glue up on riser, third if you count making accent strips
I had to take them to .040 so they didn’t break on the tight radius
-
That’s gonna be a nice one Kenny!
I’m working on a bow for my states bowhunters convention and one for a friend. I’ll get started on my swap bow as soon as I get these finished.
-
I got all my woods. Really thinking about doing the accent stripes like that . Going to start working on doing some stripe/mosaic layups this weekend and some sanding forms.
I will be using Wenge for the black as I don't like the feel of the black phenolic in riser stripes. They always seem to develop a small catch edge.
Ken
-
"I will be using Wenge for the black as I don't like the feel of the black phenolic in riser stripes. They always seem to develop a small catch edge."
That's what I've found also, never had one fail but hate to feel the joint!
Seems less on a riser I-beam for some reason?
-
Alright!
My last deer season ended, I’ve started the process of checking some honey-do items off the list and getting ready to dig into my victims bow next week hopefully.
I pulled out some of my current wood stock and interested in your opinions of combinations.
All ‘stabilizable’ species will be stabilized and in turn will darken somewhat. The more oily and dense woods will not. I tried to stabilize some Bocote once at it turned the leftover juice into root beer.😁
What do you think?
-
First or third pic, love that walnut if that's what it is.
I like riser darker than limbs too, but that's just me..
-
I agree with you Kenny on lighter colored limbs on a dark riser unless both are light or dark.
You are correct, 1,3,& 4 are stabilized walnut.
I hesitated putting that sample in 1&3 because I'm pretty fond of them myself. :)
They came from a small 10" branch that had a wicked 'z' looking bend in it. I ended up with (3) 7/8" small slabs out of it after truing them up.
-
Looks awesome!!
-
The post office dropped off a stick of maple from Mike and Kyle at RosewoodArchery for the bowshop. The walnut was reclaimed from a very old percussion cap double barrel shotgun stock. The stock and action had been brought to me to try fix but in the end the owner said keep it or throw it away.
The plan is to lay a g10 i-beam in the walnut for the backside of the riser, lama and glass surround it with the rest of the walnut on the belly side being layered with ebony ply.
The limbs will be maple under clear glass on the back but with black on the belly side. I am open to a stain for the maple or I can airbrush something but I didn’t want the lams to look too busy. Any suggestions for a stain?Translucent Green?
The black belly side glass may have so airbrushed work done before the finish is sprayed on. Still undecided.
-
I've had really good luck with Keda Dye stains. They are a powder concentrate you mix with Acetone, Denatured Alcohol, or Lacquer Thinner, etc.
A little goes a long way and is fairly cheap on Amazon.
https://kedadyeinc.com/
https://www.ebay.com/itm/352308787735?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-213727-13078-0&mkcid=2&itemid=352308787735&targetid=4581183927179143&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=&poi=&campaignid=418233787&mkgroupid=1241348861725295&rlsatarget=pla-4581183927179143&abcId=9300542&merchantid=51291&msclkid=791c0a7e55741fabf19069aa58179152
You can blend the different colors to make what you want. I used straight brown on this curly maple to make it pop and blend in with Bocote on this one. I used a pretty light mix and the maple was stabilized so it may not have taken as deep/dark as it could have.
-
Jon that is sharp....
-
Very sharp!
-
Thanks guys
-
Hmm all this stuff is looking good. Kenny maybe U tube,
OKay I have a
riser block already made. Gonna use it with some quartersawen sycamore. I got the veneers done today.Need wedges and core boo yet. Gonna be a curve.Got tofigue out where to neak a little pink in tho.

Nope but U-IS

An Kenny :bigsmyl: we
-
I like me some pink! :goldtooth:
-
That’s gonna be nice Stic! I’m might start on my swap bow tomorrow. I almost have my other projects done.
Anyone ever used Knobthorn wood? I used a piece in one of the last bows. It’s pretty stuff but it sands like rock. Curious if got a super hard piece or if it’s all that way.
-
Got some parts made for my swap bow.
-
Got started on a pattern for footed limb veneers and glued up some mosaics.
Never done either one of these before so I have learned grain orientation is critical to the tight radius’ and I am having better luck with TiteBond wood glue vs epoxy for holding the pieces together.
-
I have 3 bows to glue up and a coffee table to build, then I'll be back on the trade bow! :o
-
SLACKER:)
:wavey:
-
Roy I was holding this one to see if you were in this time , guess I’ll put it back on the rack ...

What is it a walking stick?
-
Could be I reckon,
Actually a hunk of form I cut off re doing a kid bow form ..
-
Hope my victim likes these veneers. I had a lot of fun learning how to do them.
Thinking about growing some stain on them to make the curly pop. What do you guys think?
Bottom picture is just acetone to see what they look like under glass.
-
Those are very nice!
-
Sweet....
-
Wow super nice Jon , :archer2:
-
Jon, I like em as is, back to the "I like riser darker than veneers!"
Awesome job on those!
-
Thanks guys.
I did just now stain one of the blemished ones to see how it looks and how thin I could grind it down safely. Ground this one down to .020 and it looks to be solid.
-
Most times the grain will be two shades darker under glass and glue. I would keep them natural.
-
Yeah. I think you are right. I did wet them both out later and like the natural as well
-
They turned out very nice!
-
Started my bow [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] . Bamboo Backed Bloodwood
-
Nice Dan..
-
That's gonna be a nice one Dan!!
-
Is Bloodwood good as belly wood?
-
I got a little bit done today. The core lamground and butt wedge glued up :biglaugh:

-
Ah some pink for Mr. McKenzie?:)
-
:dunno:
-
Is Bloodwood good as belly wood?
i think it is a great belly wood. It is in the Mulberry family like Osage. Always stays red also.
-
I’ll take it ! :biglaugh:
-
I just got some news that the macular degeneration in my right eye is progressing faster than anticipated. If the bowyer making my bow has not gotten to far into the build would you switch it to left handed please?
I knew I was going to need to switch but thought it might be a couple of more years.
-
Damn ,Dan! Hate to hear that!
-
Off topic, but are you getting injections for this? My wife works in the «eye section» of a hospital and that is why I have heard about this illness. Some people are getting injections in the eyes every 4 weeks.
-
Sorry to hear that, Dan...

no one had said anything about this. Perhaps it has to get worse. It is only in the right eye.
-
rainman, sent you a PM

Working on it Dan
Those who are currently AFK, be advised. I will start reaching out to you for updates this weekend if you haven't posted in a while.

Got some riser and wedge wood under vacuum for 5 days and letting them soak without vacuum while we are on vacation.
Before we left my aluminum stick also showed up for the :banghead:adjustable test riser I want to make.
Looking forward to getting back to work on it all.
-
Pretty big chunk of aluminum be interesting tosee what you do with that.
-
Pretty big chunk of aluminum be interesting tosee what you do with that.
Haha. I’m pretty interested too.
I’ve got some drawings made up and gonna mill a mock up out of wood before I dig into the aluminum.
My idea’s definitely don’t manifest the way I think they will every time.😁
-
I got to ask you said wood vac for five days. Did it take that long for the bubbles to quit ? What species of wood?
-
Curly maple.
(3) 1x4x20
(1) 3/4 x 2x 20
It was still bubbling ever so slightly yet. But was leaving on vacation for 6 days and didn’t want to leave it unattended for that long. I’ve had good results with most woods even though I have probably stopped a little short of complete air evacuation. Since I done put color in the resin, it’s hard to tell the level of saturation I get.
I’ve noticed that all the Maple I’ve stabilized sinks like a rock and gains significant weight.
-
That is my experience with Maple also. Soaks so much it don't float. And with color get completely thru even 8/4 pieces. What I been told is the specific gravity of the wood determines if it floats or no and has nothing to do with complete penetration.
-
Ready to drill some holes.
-
Your victim gonna be happy.
-
Thanks Mike, I hope they like it.
-
#2 under pressure. Hoping the weight is right.
-
I made a boo boo. using straight taper wedge and got one upside down. If they tiller and hit weight could call it a character flaw ? what you all think?
-
Either way it will be interesting to see the outcome!
-
Stickypops your hose looks to be a little limp..
I'd finish the bow and see how it goes.
-
  That aint the half of it drilled one limb only to find out Iforgot to flip my drill block to the curve side. Easy fix with plugs and overlays but :o
-
Maybe shouldn't work in shop when love is in the air on Valentines Day !! :biglaugh:
-
Glad I'm not the only one that's done that Mike.
I got a string on the junk I'm building. Everything seems okay. Little on the heavy side but I think I can make it work. It's the first 60" bow I've made on this design.
-
I think that bow will be great for whoever gets it.
Pretty good looking dust collector does it work well ?
-
It works great. I’ve had it for around 10 years and I’ve had no trouble with it.
-
Morning all. I have my bow down to floor tiller but have been remiss in taking pics. I'll fix that in the next week. Also been working on my new Bowyer's Bench :)
-
Kenny, what size is the riser? I have a 14” riser on the 60” I am building. Hoping to get some time to work on it this week.
-
My forward handle has a 16”
-
Definitely interested in seeing how it turns out and preforms!
-
This bow blank was prepped many year ago and has been waiting for a worthy victim :)
66", 1-1/4" wide. I'm looking forward to working it up.

Nice John
What's the purpose of the wide slot in your bench?
-
Prolly to make people like you ask questions :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks Roy. It's a tool tray. It's a modification to a traditional joiners bench. Helps keep the work top clear for panel work. Not so important for making selfbows but it is kind of cool :)
-
Ok sounds like a good idea.
-
I misspoke 4 point and Kenny. I apologize for the confusion. I saw 4 points 60” take Down and thought it was yours Kenny which is also a fine bow. 4 Point how long is your riser? I am building a 60” td as well for my victim. It too is the first 60” from this form. May take down to 58” and see how she does.
Glad I'm not the only one that's done that Mike.

-
Mine is a 16 inch riser. I used the same limb as I use on my 62”. It has a 8 1/2 limb wedge.
-
 Still 16" on TD and FHLB :biglaugh:
-
You guys have short risers, my Bear takedown riser is 26 inches on a 66 inch bow...
-
Roy, I’m planning on making a long riser takedown recurve at some point. It’ll be a 22 inch riser for a 66” bow.
Kenny, what’s max draw length on your 60” takedown longbow. This one looks like 29”s is gonna be stretching it.
-
Travis, I think a longer riser with shorter limbs makes a faster bow.
-
Travis,
I only have the 62/64. I've built a couple 60" but don't remember where they stack. I know I went 15" riser on those.
The 64" will do 30" , not sure on the 62" but I'm guessing 29 on it.
Tip wedges cut the draw down some.
-
Roy, my recurves have I fairly short working portion of the limb. I use a tip wedge to stiffen the tips. They seem fairly quick.
Kenny, that seems similar to mine. Kind wish I would’ve left this one 62”.
-
Yes Travis, I think the shorter working limbs are the key to quickness.
-
You guys that build can go to a straight taper wedge and use different length wedges for different draw lengths. My present recurve has 17 in. Riserwith 11in. ST wedge and stays smooth out to 31. Have not went past that but think it would be good for a bit more. That gives about 16 in. Working limb on a 61 in. Bow I expect fora 66in. Bow would at least be 20 in. Riser.
-
Thanks Roy. It's a tool tray. It's a modification to a traditional joiners bench. Helps keep the work top clear for panel work. Not so important for making selfbows but it is kind of cool :)
I need a big opening like that to occasionally sweep all the tools into. 😀

I got both risers roughed out last night. Wife is due in a week so I'll have it glued up this weekend if I'm smart. The grey one will be for this bow. I have a friend at my local range that just got shoulder surgery and I am going to make him a 15 lb bow while I am at it. The Myrtle riser will be for his.
-
Kenny I may like to have one. :biglaugh:
-
Sometimes I clean it off before I start work, sometimes not...
Would come with a rake to get everything to a corner...
-
Got some finish on the bench. Mounting the vise tomorrow and gonna get to work. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Nicholi what are you using to cut the risers out. It looks like a router ? Cnc or buy hand.
-
John i don't know if that table will be heavy enough for bow making. Lol
-
Yeah Dan, I am a little worried about that. I can get my hands on some steel I-Beams if I need to reinforce it :)
-
Very nice job there John.
-
Got some finish on the bench. Mounting the vise tomorrow and gonna get to work.
That looks really nice. What is the wood used? Did you use the laminations to form the mortises and tenons or cut them? What are you using for a vise (or vises)?
For you tool hounds out there, just search woodworking workbench on youtube and you will find piles of bench builds. The split top set up with a tool tray is pretty common. This is a pretty amazing bench build:

Mark
-
Hi Mark,
Thanks. It's southern pine lumber, 2x10's ripped in half and glued up. I glued it up so I didn't have to cut the mortise and tenon joints. Not super fancy but heavy and kinda cool. The weight is important as I didn't want to anchor it to the floor. I added some retractable casters so I could move it around my shop.
-
Now that's a proper selfbow bench!
-
Awesome....
-
I'm getting close to spraying some finish. Got the poundage right in the sweet spot I think. I dropped the riser while shaping it. Hit on a sharp glass edge, I'm hoping I can get it sanded out. Not super noticeable but super annoying.

-
Dang Travis!! Sounds like stuff I do .
Looks good !!
John that’s a pretty fancy bench there! I like it!
Down to a couple finish costs on this @&$&@$ table and I’ll be all over that tradebow
-
Man that is sharp
-
Thanks guys, I used some curly canary wood for veneers. I think they’ll match the Osage well after the Osage darkens.
-
Very nice, Travis..
-
Nicholi what are you using to cut the risers out. It looks like a router ? Cnc or buy hand.
It’s a cnc router. It’s just a small desktop setup, and really made for engraving. I don’t have the bandsaw skills some of you do!
I got it cooked last night. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
You could use that CNC router to make jigs for a profiling sander. I for one could use a coupler more jigs. :bigsmyl:
-
So my first attempt out of my deflex/reflex form was off for some reason. Gluing up another blank today the form broke. Not a good day.
-
You could use that CNC router to make jigs for a profiling sander. I for one could use a coupler more jigs. :bigsmyl:
I’m always good to help out. Send me what you want and I’ll make it, just don’t expect speed!
-
I do have something in mind.
-
A few small updates. Everything but the tip overlays are glued up. Hopefully I’ll get it profiled up this week. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
That’s gonna be a nice one Nicholi.
I just noticed my glue lines aren’t great on the one side of the bow. The shelf side is fine but the other isn’t great. I checked my sander and it’s still true. Had to be in the laminations. I can’t remember if I checked both sides or not. Sorry in advance to my victim.
-
Thanks to everyone for keeping up with the swap so far. I have to leave for one last trip for work this week so I will be on mobile if you guys need me. I will be gone approximately 3 weeks. Most of you have my phone number or can PM me if you need something. I will still be keeping up on this but will only have internet and cell service in the evenings. Keep going strong and thank you for all you have been doing!
-
Some nice work being done.

Thats a great idea for turning out templates!
-
I am just following, from the peanut gallery 😁
-
Notice the 3 marks an inch apart from ends? I like to do that and check with calipers to keep both fades the same. Prob don't need to but I still do it...
-
Nice work, Kenny
-
Thanks Bryan!
Now fades are ready to go and carefully laid on bench where I can knock it off !
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Glue in morning, got a kid test bow in oven and not sure if the other air hose is any good .
-
Those marks you talk about are good but that is why I make profiling jigs only have to fight it once while making the jig.
-
That’s looking awesome Kenny. That’s gonna be one lucky dude that ends up with that!
I took the morning off to glue up my victims riser.
-
Very nice Kenny. I like the accent strips.
Jon, that’s gonna be a looker.
-
That’s very nice Jon,
4 point I really like the look of that riser you’re working on. I like it when they flow like that. Well done
-
Thanks Travis! You snowed under?
That’s gonna be great Jon!!
-
Kenny, will be by morning. Blowing 50mph and dumping snow. At least this one supposed to be done by morning. Last one we got in December lasted 4 days. Good day for making bow strings.

Kenny that’s gonna be a beauty … super cool  and the notch in that belly overlay ? to take a little stress off before glue up maybe.
Yes, I like the ends of overlay to be tight against the glass, and that just helps if there is any variance. I fit til there is no gap but thats just insurance. :)
-
You got more patients than me I would be glueing thin pieces that would bend when clamped.
-
Awesome Kenny.
-
Finally got into the shop today and got my new Resaw King blade on my band saw.
I got enough stuff cut out for 2 bows and enough lams for spares.
Bubbinga and Zebra Wood with Wenge and quarter sawn Sycamore accent.
The Zebra wood on one bow will be turned one way and the other bow will be in the stripe direction.
Zebra wood on the back, black glass on the belly with bamboo core and maple belly.

Looking good got enough clamps :biglaugh:
You can never have enough clamps.
-
I usually use a pressure strip on the overlay, but the clamps weren't busy and with .050 glass , don't think I needed it... :biglaugh:
-
I built short forms and air hose my riser overlays.
-
Ahh, you guys who build the same bows sometimes...
I should but haven't, just like the profile sander for risers. Guess I ought to build more bows to make myself do that! :biglaugh:
-
A little more today . She’s coming in toward lower end of range on weight but will be in there…
Dang it, I am likin it but it’s gonna go to the victim barring any terrible luck …

Nice!

They are all looking good. I am starting Monday on three risers. Y’all can pic the riser you like best as any of y’all could be the victim !
-
Stickypops that is wild....
-
Thought we was gonna get washed away yesterday almost 3 in. rain. Anyhow got some done today Roy that riser is osage and yellow stable maple with some accents. Gothe tips overlayed and riser ruffed out.

-
I wasn’t able to get as much done other than rough cutting the risers. The accents have not arrived yet so still waiting ,however, as promised here are risers to choose from. 14” or 16” riser. So either a 56 or 58” hybrid. Hard maple with either ebony substitute of Claro walnut for the footings on either riser. The pic with the drawings on the paper shows the silver inlay work on the side of the limb pads and the center g10 rod inlays. I am leaning toward the maple and ebony substitute as I think the sterling silver will pop well. If y’all want the walnut I would inlay the same but with copper which would match the limb bolt washers.
-
I'm with you on the ebony/maple.
-
getting close tiller good weight good. needs tips shaped and some more sanding. got a bit of spalted butts.

My bow is ready to start tillering in earnest. Dialed in the layout and got her bending on the floor really nice. She's 66" total length, 1-1/4" wide for half the limb, mostly flat profile but it'll have a bit of curve to it. This blank is at least 10 years old. I prepped it many years back and so I had a bit of a head start. She's bent and slightly toasted with a heatgun. I suspect it'll be a burner! [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I like it Kenny. What are you using for a sealer ?
-
Jim, it’s some really old sanding sealer bro gave me. Not sure how old it is but it stirred up fine and price tag says $9.37 and when I looked at hardware store they have 20 to 25 bucks on a quart of it . :biglaugh:
-
Both bows are looking good! I will have a little more time this week to work on the bows. The mill needed tramming and I made a drilling jig for the new bow. Gluing the back overlays on the riser tomorrow and then drill and tap the riser.
The bow being built is new design I have not made before so it may take a few limb attempts to dial in a set of good preforming ones.

All those bows are looking real good :clapper: ... good luck to both of you with your backs i’ve been down for eight months in the last three weeks I’ve gotten much worse I haven’t been able to spend any time in the shop ... booked for surgery they’re telling me two to six months more :deadhorse: Kicking the s#*~t out of me now.
-
I've been the lower back thing too. Broke my lower back about 15 years ago. Not doing too bad now other than normal stiffness and a little sore all the time.
Wish you guys the best.
-
Got the riser glued up last night, form rebuilt for the limbs, laminations cut and ground. Hopefully get the limbs in the form in the next day or so. Pics of riser coming soon. Looks really good.
-
Wedges made, Wenge I Beam cut and sanded, overlays and limb pads cut and sanded to thickness. Now to slice the riser and glue in the I beam, and glue up the limbs.
-
Beautiful wood AH!
-
That is gonna be nice.
-
Carved out the evening to work on the swap bow. Settled on a limb pad angle and hope to have limbs on and limbs profiled tonight.

String done , now for a warm day to finish spraying. And my paint pens didn’t come today so I could see if they work for lettering her. String doesn’t quite match but that’s as good as I could do!

Thanks Kenny.

Those looking great ….. Kenny and Jon
-
Nice bows.
-
The only thing I was able to get done this week were the overlays on the riser and made a set of test limbs. I think they came in too light but we will see Tuesday how they shape up.
-
Made good progress today.
Riser is ready for finish. Just to final shape limb tips and I’m ready to spray.
I missed my victims weight range by one pound on the high. Anybody that that doesn’t work for let me know and I’ll fix it. If I do t hear from anyone , I’ll leave it as is . It’s shoots great and is quite as is.

For my victim. Should be there Thurs. I forgot to put string silencers on it (spinner bait skirt stuff) if you want I can send you some of it. My personal bow like this likes 8 inch brace and has carbon and got tiny bit of ring to it. The all glass limbs have no ring and pretty quite.
Can't wait to see your full draw pic.

I shot a couple of arrows out of Stic's bow. It's very pleasant to shoot. I didn't get time to mess with it much. I'll get more pics and shoot it more later. Thank you much Mike, seems to be a sweet shooter. Totally different draw cycle than my recurves but it feels great at my draw.
-
Love those veneers Jon!!
Travis, that looks like it has some draw left, you have like a 31" draw, right?
-
Yeah Kenny, right around 31”. The arrow is a full length 55/75 gold tip. I don’t feel any sign of sharp poundage gain. I’d guess it could go a little more. My 61” is getting to its limits at my draw.
-
That looks pretty good at your draw. How you mean a different draw cycle?
If you notice the limb has no forward taper. That may have an effect on the draw. And I think the straight tapered wedges are also working some to smooth things a bit.
I am thinking of using .001 with the Kenny superman and get the tips working a bit more for shorter draws.
-
Stic, you nailed it for his draw. Well engineered. :clapper:
-
Mike, I didn’t mean there was anything wrong with your draw cycle, it’s just different than what I build. Mine have a lot more preload on the limbs so there’s a lot more poundage at the beginning of the draw. Yours feels smoother actually all the way thru. I can post pics side by side, they are totally different designs and they both work well at my draw.
-
Thanks
-
Did not think of it as anything wrong. Now what yousay probably is due to no taper. Glad you like it
-
I shot my poor victims bow more today, cut off the rubber silencers and put yarn on. Looks so much better...to me anyway...
Probably ship first of week...
I need to read the rules but I didn't think we were holding up for anything?

Passed the table top test! Both limbs must set flat with no rock. Setup is square, flat and ready to profile this week.
-
Lookin good!!

Looking for advise as I decide how to fix this.
The bow I made for Stic started to show some cracks in the riser within a week of him receiving it. It’s got small hairline cracks, one on the top and one on the bottom limb pad. Both go through a pin location hole.
It’s highly figured walnut that has been stabilized, so I do not believe it is shrinking.
My thoughts are to mill out the cracks underneath the limb and fill the side cracks with thin CA. Then cap the limb pads with either stabilized straight grain walnut, a walnut veneer with clear glass, or .031 black G10.
I’m open to opinions and suggestions as I don’t want to do this twice.
Thanks in advance.
-
Whatever you do to try and fix the cracks and I have done it with water thin CA . I think a composite pad cap needs to be on there also. And am interested to see other suggestions.
-
I would definitely cap the pads. I believe that adds a lot of strength to that area. I cap all of mine now out of fear for that very thing
-
Everyone is looking great! Kid is now 6 weeks old so I am ready to get back to building!
-
Oh Jon that’s a bummer such a nice riser to have things go sideways on ya. Good luck with the fix.
-
That’s very unfortunate and strange (considering it’s stabilized) on a beautiful piece of work.
I always install a limb pad liner, often several layers, using it as an opportunity to add additional accents.
I would tape the side cracks to prevent outflow, mill open the crack on the pad top a very small amount (just enough to pool the glue), and pour in some extra thin CA. It’s as thin or thinner than water. It will penetrate right through to the sides and bottom. Then pull the alignment pins, sand the limb pad, and add on a liner, the G10 would work great. If you shape the liner to match the limb pad and the limb butt end exactly, you may get away with not having to refinish the entire riser. Judging by the quality of work you do, it should work out beautifully.
Attached is a picture of a similar piece of figured Claro Walnut with grain also sweeping up into the limb pad, and the liner .
Best luck!
Regards, Noah

-
Another thing I have found about stabilizing walnut that it needs to soak a long time to gain much weight. Witch to me being walnut porus should soak more :dunno:
-
Beautiful work Noah!
Thanks to everyone for the comments.
This is what I decided to do, which is really inline with most of the suggestions. It really is not rocket science. Just simple structural practice.
Pulled the pins. Sanded all the finish off the area to be repaired, blew out the cracks, super thin CA the whole limb pad and sides to rejection.
Milled the alignment holes in .031 black G10, 80grit prepped the G10, used past wax on the limbs and bolt for a release agent, used Huntsman epoxy on the G10 and bolted the limbs on tight and clamped.
I’ll simply reshape the riser with limbs attached and refinish.
I’d be pretty shocked if it has an issue moving forward.
Lesson learned.
-
That should be good. G10 should keep it stable
-
I’m gonna clean it up now and take it to a shoot tomorrow and see how she holds up. I’ll easily run a hundred arrows through it at 31”.
If it holds up like expected, I’ll get it refinished and back to Mike next week.
-
Whatever you do to try and fix the cracks and I have done it with water thin CA . I think a composite pad cap needs to be on there also. And am interested to see other suggestions.
Running phenolic on the limb pads is the only way to go. I do it on all my TD bows.
Cap it first, then fill with thin CA.
Didn’t see you last post…. That should work just fine.
-
All of the bows look awesome!! I have been struggling a bit getting a set of limbs in the correct weight since it’s a new form. After chatting with Stic I think I am on the right track and should have a good set soon.

Thank you to everyone for putting in the work to make this swap run as smooth as those in the past. As the end of the official build period draws near, I will start reaching out to those who are still working on a regular basis. If you are running into issues, please let me know as soon as possible so we can work something out. Keep up the good work!

-
I asked Chris to call me and I have not talked to him as of yet but I wanted to be upfront here as well. To whomever has my name please do not send a bow to me.
Some things have changed in my personal life that have brought me to this decision that were not known when I signed up. I apologize for any inconvenience or loss my trade may cause. I am very much embarrassed to even have to make this post.
Thank you to those that helped with my questions and your time - Shane wink
-
I am now aware of the situation and will be getting things worked out right now. No hard feelings here, the man has things that need taken care of. Stand by for updates.
-
Shane, I wish you the best with everything.🙏
-
Shane, hope all is OK and no worries on the swap brother!
-
Working an angle, will have everything back in motion by tomorrow morning latest.

Thanks guys! Family is always our priority. My wife’s father just had major surgery and now her mother is very ill. With work and taking care of our own place and our parents we just do not have any time.
Chris did call and check on me today. I am thankful he is able to make it all right for my guy.
-
For sure take care of family! The swap is nothing to worry about compared to family !

Glad you like it Sacred Mt. I wasn’t so sure about it, I was trying to guess what it felt like at your draw. The scale said it was good but sometimes that can be misleading.
-
Shane, by all means family comes first! This is a hobby and a lot of great people. Things happen that are out of our control and I like to think everyone here understands that!
Take care and I am sure you will be back building again in the future.
Ken
-
Alright we are back up and running! Sorry it took a little longer than expected.
-
Well dang....missed my target weight. Got the riser like I want. Will need to be finish sanded.
I cut out extra lams because I was afraid of this. This victim is nowhere near my short draw length and my normal design would stack at that draw, so I lengthen the limbs and shortened the wedges a bit from my design.
Will get new limbs made tomorrow and hopefully be back on track.
Can't wait to see some clear coat on this
-
That looks good!
-
Real nice, looks like a great grip on her!
-
I will get some close ups when I clear it. I overlayed the shelf as well. Clear coat ready makes the bubbinga pop. Just bummed I missed weight on these limbs. Good learning experience though.
-
At least you can use the limbs on another build. Looks good!

I'm getting closer on mine. Tiller's good. Had a hiccup but it isn't as bad as I feared. Shot the bow a bunch today and working to get her tamed as far as handshock. It's not awful especially with heavy arrows but I can get it better. Tuning, finessing the tiller, some fluff on the string and losing mass at the tips ought to do it. I wish I had some low stretch string material. I read that helps a lot too. Here's a little video about handshock.

Stabbed myself in the hand last week cleaning out dishwasher so I can get back to tillering this weekend.
-
Well, I got the Swap Bow that I built for Stic repaired and packaged up.
I used Pirateship.com to pay for the postage and I recommend everyone look into this for themselves.
When I sent it the first time via USPS, I paid almost $29 to ship it.
Through Pirateship.com it is going back to him via UPS for less than $9. :clapper:

Getting the finish on. Not too much left to go!

Looking good Nicholi.
What is the blue material? G10 I assume?
-
You are correct, G10.
-
My swap bow is shooting pretty sweet now. I'm pondering the finish at this point. I have a new video about edited. She's such a good shooter for me, it's going to be tough to let her go.
-
Nicholi where are you getting blue G10 ??
-
Got the new limbs on a I hit weight ! :bigsmyl:
Spent the evening sanding. Had a little bit of tillering to do but it came in real nice. Got some more finish sanding to do in the morning and it will be ready for the finish. Should ship this week!

One more...went to put the calf hair rest on...there was not one in my drawer.. my son robbed me! It will be here tomorrow...
Got to figure out how to box it up to ship.
Trying to get some better lighting to show the sycamore stripe and grain.
-
The hair rest came today. Made a string, burnished it with a piece of leather and some string wax. Will leave it strung overnight and serve it at brace height in the morning over coffee. Then go ship it!
-
update. I just finished steaming the osage stave and will start on the tillering stages.
-
I got most of the finish done and will complete it over the next couple days and then a little more work before she's ready to go.
Here's a teaser for the finish.

That blue really sets that bow off. Somebody be happy.
-
Agree with Mike. That blue really pops. Looks like it even gathers a little bit of light?
-
Well, I got a package today from Ken (Hillbilly)
The finish on this bow looks great and has a great draw cycle.
I’ll get to shoot it this week and get some full draw pics up.
In the mean time, here are a couple detail picks. Great wood combo as well.
-
That was a hard one not to give away when talking about it. Not many of you victims have a 31" draw! That is the first one I have made for anywhere near that draw length! Please let me know how it works and any feedback is appreciated! Don't hold back either!
Ken
-
Just got the lettering done and shot the last coats of finish. She's really pretty if I do say so myself. Finished right at weight with a pretty flat resting profile. I'll get the handle wrapped and shoot it a few more times in finished state, take some more pics and video, and then package it up and ship on Friday.

Love that bullsnake skin.
-
Looking good fellas! Last day of the official build window is tomorrow. I will post stats once we get there, but we are looking pretty good!
-
Here’s the bow review on the bow Ken made for me.
64” longbow 48#/31”
Great draw cycle, no noticeable stack which makes it really easy to shoot, and sends em where I point them.
Thank you Ken!
https://youtu.be/lo7CvgYlHis
-
Arrow flight looks pretty good. Bow fits you very nicely.
-
Decided to back the osage with sinew after a light darken spot while steaming. Probably from the edge of the steaming pot. It is about mid limb.
Meanwhile, I've been processing some sinew and just about ready to apply with Titebond Genuine Hide Glue. Both the steaming and sinew...new to me.
Grace period for me and will be working on some other project(s) to go with while the sinew is drying.
Coaching Track and Field is really demanding this year.
Thanks
-
I won't be able to ship until Monday. I thought I had all my leather stuff somewhere but the shop reno and my new organization method, ie. throwing it all in the attic, has bit me again :) I'll have to get the handle stitched up after a trip to get some stuff. Thanks.
-
A setback, pulled to 29 inches by accident. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] i have another blank will get to work on tomorrow. My recipient knows who he is.
-
I shipped yesterday!
-
Alright, current stats as of now:
5/9 Received
1/9 In the mail
3/9 In work (one shipping Monday)
We are now in the grace period for those still working. Please post often to keep us up to date, I will be reaching out every few days if we don't hear from you. Thank you to everyone for the hard work!
-
I shipped. thanks.
-
Haven't posted much lately and this evening was the first evening I have been home in a few days. Son had a motorcycle accident...
Anyway, home for awhile before I go back to the hospital and the UPS truck pulls up!
Thank you so much Nicholi! That was a great pik me up! My colors as well. The Grey and blue are one of my favorite combos. I have several long rang riffles in that same color scheme!
The bow shoots extremely well and with no string puffs is very quiet. Hopefully I can get some pics at full draw and some group pics as soon as I can get my wife to video!
Thank you very much Nicholi! It really is a great shooter!
-
Sorry to hear about your son Ken.
Praying for you all.
-
Thank you!
-
Glad I could help a little during your challenges.
We’ll be praying for your son!
I’m glad you like it!

Spoke with Sacred mt today. He is making good progress and hopes to ship next week. Closing in on the end!
-
One more coat of truOil and the handle goes on. Will ship next week.
-
Well boys, we had a bit of an issue. I'll be jumping in to replace Sacred mt, who can't finish this year for reasons. I will call the swap complete once Dan's bow is received, but our last guy can rest assured he has one coming his way. Sorry for the trouble, and bare with me as we finish this thing up!
-
Good job, Chris.
-
Some great looking bows guys! Maybe next year I'll be able to jump back on the party wagon with y'all...
-
And Chris: you're doing a bang up job! :clapper:
-
Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Making some serious headway thanks to the community here. Will keep you posted!

Dan let me know his bow is in the mail.

Congrats Kenny. Dan you built a beautiful bow! Looks like a good shooter as well.
-
Quite the nice bow there, Dan. Great job!
As for where we stand, all bows minus the one are complete and received at this point. You have all put in a phenomenal effort and have made this relatively painless. Thank you for bringing this year's swap to the finish line despite a couple hiccups!
I spoke to Nicholi on 6 June and made him aware of what is going on. Rest assured, Nick will not be left hanging here. Several people here have generously stepped in to make sure we do right by our guy, for which, I am eternally grateful.
Where do we go from here? I will be "officially" marking the swap complete for the year as this is through no fault of the folks still here. I will be posting progress updates in this thread once I receive the things that are currently in the mail. There will be no guesswork here. You will all see progress pictures every time I touch the bow (almost daily) until I get it in the mail.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me for clarification. Most of you probably have my cell number at this point, and you can always drop me a PM here. Once again, thank you to everyone who participated and kept the swap going for another year!
-
Received a beautiful bow from Kenny last night. It is about 2/3rds complete, so should be able to get it moving pretty quickly. Put a string on order, more to come. My parents are flying in today so no shop time tonight lol.
-
No pics?!

That’s a good looking bow Dan and Kenny. I sure like your target set up pretty sweet..
-
Great job on the bow swap I enjoyed following … sometimes not easy Pulling off these things. It sounds like some pretty solid characters. Stepping up to help make it happen … that’s awesome. Congrats.
-
No pics?!
Well I guess I can if you want to blow the whole thing wide open!
-
Well I guess since we all know who, it’s fair there is some kind of surprise. The build pics are always fun though. Can you take some and post them after I get it?

USPS is killing me. My 3Rivers order isn't coming in until Wednesday now. Sorry guys.

You mean a righteous due. Lol

Order on track to be delivered tomorrow.
-
Nice job, Kenny.
-
Package arrived yesterday, I am up, and headed to the shop. Pictures and update when I'm done working for the day.
-
Sorry for the delay gents. Got the tips cut and started working the top half of the bow. USPS knocked the corner of the shelf off so I had to do some reshaping to get it looking decent again.

Got the fiberglass smoothed out and prepped for the leather wrap, sanded all my file marks out and have the wood sanded up to 100 grit, depainted everything with denatured alcohol, and masked for tip overlays tomorrow.
-
Also, if anyone can enlighten me on how the hell you get the leather wrap on the grip I would appreciate it
-
LOL I never got to the leather grip so can't help you there, but once put a rattan string (?) grip on and soaked it with CA and lightly sanded it. The guy who ended up with that one thought it was the greatest thing ever!!
-
Several tutorials on here and YouTube. Joe Don Jones is the one I like best, I have seen him do it in person and Clay Hayes has him demonstrate it in one of his videos.
-
Thanks Dan.
-
Its not terribly difficult but the more convoluted the grip shape the trickier it gets. Use thin leather. Wet it out and then pull on it in different directions. You will find one direction where it will stretch more than the others. Plan to have the stretchy direction go around the grip and cut it to the full length of the grip area plus a little extra. Leave it longer than the diameter by a good little bit and then start pulling it around the grip area. By working at it hard you can usually get it to fit tight throughout the whole length of the grip. When you have it fitted as well as possible use several spring clamps along the back of the bow to tightly clamp the loose ends together and let it dry.
Once it's dry you can do some fine trimming and then you can glue it and lace it on the back side.
-
Thank you Mike. Watched a bunch of videos on it this morning as well. Got the tip overlays on this morning but running a little short on time today. Have to go back to work this afternoon (been on leave with family in town) and my wife is sick. Progress will probably be a little slower during the week, but I aim to have it finished this weekend.
Is there a generally accepted minimum wall thickness on the fiberglass sleeve? I'm expecting the draw to be in the mid to low 40's. The areas near the corners of the tenon seem thin to me, but that may just be paranoia from dealing with aircraft fiberglass lol.
-
I put blue painters tape around the grip, then carefully slice the back and take it off. Lay that onto your piece of leather and cut it out.
Deer hide is very stretchy if that's what you are using. I cut the leather out, then use a hole punch to punch the holes equally on each side. Don't forget to put a mark on the top end of the grip on the inside so you get it back on right. Then I spray 3m adhesive on the leather and put it on the bow, stretching it and aligning it to fit right. I let that setup for about 5 minutes then stitch it up.
-
Sorry for the gap in posts. She's quick and consistent!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
If anyone can fill me in on suitable fiberglass thickness, I would appreciate it. The handle still feels big. I would like to take a little more meat out of it before the wrap goes on, if I can. Currently pulling 44.5 lbs @ 29".
-
Handle thinned, tips shaped and dressed, and finish sanding started.
-
Finish sanding done and put the first coat of paint on the fiberglass. Second coat tonight and then on to the riser and limbs with sanding sealer tomorrow.
-
Any updates?
-
Sorry Nick, my dad was in town. Finish will be done tomorrow and then I'll get the leather on the handle and ship her out to ya.
-
Laying that sanding sealer down!

What animal is that off of? That is an awesome grain.

It was packed in the shipping box by Mr Kenny. Hopefully he will let us know, because I'm not sure lol
-
I think it was a stamped print, but I liked it and thought it was cool...
-
Looking good Chris!

Leather is all dried out and held shape nicely. Working on the trim and install now.
-
Awesome! Not sure I could get a leather wrap right... :biglaugh:
-
Yeah, well... we'll see what happens  I'm going to the store to get some some tools because the edges look like butt right now.

-
Got it on there, and it came out alright I think. Could definitely be better, but not bad for a first try lol. Putting the string puffs and rest plate on tomorrow, then mailing it out.

Alright, here is where we stand. I'm out of time before work today so I'll have to mail it tomorrow. Decided to leave the string silencers off as the bow is very quiet right now, but I will put them in the box in case you want to put them on later. Hope you like it!

Thanks everyone. Getting a late start due to some work drama last night, but I will be mailing the bow in the next couple hours. Nick, I will text you the tracking number when I get it.
-
Got the bow mailed off about 3 hours ago and Nick has the tracking number. String silencers and an extra piece of leather included in the box in case my wrap job ever gives up the ghost. Commence the waiting game!
-
That’s a pretty cool looking bow well done :shaka:
Mind we ask what all the woods were on that bow ? 🏹
-
Thank you! I can only take limited credit here though. Kenny made it, I just piked it down a bit to bring the weight into range for Nick and refinished it. He already made a bow for the swap and I didn't want him to have to pull double duty.
Zebra veneers, bubinga, maple, charcoal A-wood riser, actionboo core, and a phenolic I-beam. The tips have a pistachio overlay on them because I was out of zebra, but I think it ended up matching pretty well. I am sure I am missing something in the stackup though.
-
Here’s 🍺 to the both of you  very nice
-
That bow has some background in the swap. I built it for Bue several years back in the swap, but made the tenon to narrow front to back I decided later when the sleeve popped a crack at the top. So I built a 3 piece to ship.
Then later I drilled the riser front and back of sleeve and epoxied more depth onto it. Phenolic I think, and was going to pike it and use it myself for hunting, but my 3 piece was treating me so well I just never finished it.
This looked like a good opp to get it out of the shop and to someone who would finish it up and someone who would shoot it.
Awesome job Chris, and hope Nic likes it!!

Nice! Now we just cross our fingers and hope USPS didn't smash it all up.

Everything is in good shape! I am headed to ETAR on Wednesday and I won’t be able to shoot it til then. I’ll get some good pics later in the week in the Pennsylvania “mountains”.
