Title: Cold weather doe
Post by: BrushWolf on December 23, 2022, 09:33:29 PM
I’ve always enjoyed late season deer hunting. The more snow on the ground the better but tonight made me question my sanity. It was -1 when I checked the temperature after getting settled into my blind. The time slipped by and next thing I knew two does had entered into my radish patch. My weapon of choice tonight was a 47# static tip recurve of my own design with instinct shafts and a Simmons 2 5/16” Great White broadhead. I have shot Simmons Treesharks for many years but this would be the first deer taken with this new head.

After watching them for a short time one finally got broadside at about 6 yards. The cold wind that had been blowing all evening helped to cover up any noise I made to getting into shooting position. All the clothes I had on made it a bit awkward to shoot the bow. She didn’t have a clue that I was there and next thing I knew the arrow was buried to the feathers and she was running away.  My first thought was I’d hit a tad low but she piled up just inside the tree line. She only to made it maybe 30 yards. Truth be told there’s not much difference in cutting width between the treeshark and great white and the treesharks have always been good to me. But man! Did this new shark do an awesome job.

Very nice looking recurve you built!!!

Nice late season score.

I like the non vented head.I shot Tiger Sharks a few seasons and had good luck with them.

Well done! That is a beautiful bow you crafted, love the design :clapper:

2-5/16” is a wicked head and 6 yards is close :saywhat: Did you get a pass thru? Just curious because I keep going bigger and wondering where the limit is. I shoot 53lbs at 28” and 1-3/8” Iron Will Wide plus bleeders has been largest so far, but standard is VPA 3-Blade 250 Grain 1-1/4” Cutting Diameter with no issue on White-tailed deer…

The arrow buried to the fletch. Fell out when she ran off. I’ve never had any problems putting a 2” treeshark through deer with 47-53lb recurve.
