Title: Eating Deer Liver - WARNING!
Post by: Terry Green on December 13, 2022, 12:40:53 PM
I just want to pass this along as I have a friend that knew a person that this happened to....

He went to the doctor with an ailment and they could not figure out what was wrong with him....

Finally the doctor asked him what he had eaten in the past few days and the man replied deer liver in the list.

The doctor told him he would have probably died if he had not remembered what he ate....

The deer had eaten poison oak and the man was all eat up inside from it.

So. enjoy your deer liver, but remember when you last ate it. :readit:

Wow, that's scary!    :scared:

Thanks for sharing that cautionary tale Terry.

I'll eat heart as I mentioned in the eating organs thread but organs like liver and kidneys are a no go for me. I paid enough attention in physiology class to remember that those organs filter out all the "nasty" stuff in the body.

To each their own though.

I knew there was a valid reason I don't like liver.

I've never eaten organs of anything, except fried chicken gizzards and then only on occasion because they're as tough as shoe leather.   Go figure, organs are filters designed to strain toxins out of the animal's blood and IMO there is nothing romantic or choice about eating them despite what some people tend to think and do.

Plus they are high in cholesterol.

They may be high in cholesterol but they are rich with vitamins and minerals.  They would be a great survival food.  I guaranty our ancestors aet it, along with native Americans and primal man.

I I will never forget riding in my grandfathers Gold Kist truck eating fried chicken livers when I was growing up.  I do love out of the pan fresh chicken livers, and will never forget those times....

Eggs are high in cholesterol too, but I've been eating 3-5 eggs for breakfast about 4-5 days a week for years and years.  The only thing I've been a little high on is triglycerides..... guess I eat to much pork.  :goldtooth:

Won’t eat liver or other organs, don’t care what critters. I can remember butchers grinding beef hearts into the ground beef to make it look lean.

I don’t imagine the heart ought to be lumped in with the liver and the kidneys. The heart is a muscle for pumping blood. Doesn’t filter anything, AFAIK.

Not a problem for me as I do not like the texture or flavor of liver.

The deers heart is normally the first thing I eat after making a kill. Sautaed with butter and onions I find it to be delightful. The liver, not so much. It is a little strong for me. Calf liver and chicken livers are more to my liking. Not sure how u could tell if poison oak has been consumed by the critter but it is definitely something to considered. Best to all  TG members and guest during this holiday season.

Nothing wrong with eating deer liver (from a healthy deer) when done in moderation, it's alot healthier than most of the crap served at fast food places and how much of that junk does the average person consume in a lifetime?

Some people, even 'doctors', think that eating ANY kind of meat is unhealthy.  So much for today's authoritative culinary credibility...

Wonder how they could tell the guy was eaten up inside with poison oak? What about all the crops deer eat that have sprayed with pesticides?

None of this is true, but wives tails and misinformation will eternally be there. And eating cholesterol doesn’t raise cholesterol.  Double eye roll guys. I think maybe you should have paid more attention in science class.

How did the doctor know the deer ate poison oak?

The liver stores fat, or can, but doesn’t store toxins. It detoxifies blood and the waste can be excreted in urine through kidneys or in feces. The kidney filters blood, it doesn’t store toxins it excretes the toxins or waste in urine. Vit A toxicity can happen from eating too much liver, but reactions to teating liver of animals that eat poison ivy or oak is silly.  Doctors are human, most know jack squat about diet because it’s not taught in med school. It’s the same BS short course that’s led to what we see now. Chronic illness and obesity. Anything you’ve seen for the last 30 years is basically BS, so doing the exact opposite is warranted.  Reverse the food pyramid and you’ll do a lot better. Animals are designed to eat plants, detoxify them, and use them as energy.
