After exclusively building wood arrows and hunting with them for the past 30 years, I finally broke down and built a dozen carbons. And all I could say is oh my God bear shafted out the 20 yards same hole as my feathered shaft. Speed, durability, better penetration what's not the love, don't think I'll ever go back to Wood. My 47lb Toelke whip smokes the easton axis 500 cut @ 29"with 5" feathers and 200 grain up front.

I hear ya, but I just can't shoot carbons out of my selfbows I made.

Give it some time and you may come to your senses and realize the grass ain't greener on that side of the fence :laughing:

Carbon is definitely a good shaft type.
But wood and aluminum have their place too.

Durp. It was certainly greener for me. And has been greener for almost 20 years. But like I said. I sill shoot woods on occasions.

Just shows you should give something a try before deciding you don’t like it.

You will go back, if nothing else for old times sake, trust me. In my case it’s back to aluminums for simplicity sake. That and with Nibbs it’s easier to adjust point weight without having to buy a bunch of components to find out what works best. Doesn’t mean I am discarding the dozens of carbon I have, for durability in our desert environment they serve me the best. Woods have their own calling. I like making wood arrows, trying different finishes, cresting patterns, etc. My longbow is the quietest when I shoot them.

Happened to me about 5 years ago? Everything you said and more. I shoot between 5 & 10 big game animals a year and aluminum and wood just couldn’t keep up. I was blowing through about two dozen arrows every year or 18 months. And it cost a ton. When I switched to Carbons the durability is a game changer. 30 deer and a few hogs later I have two dozen carbons ready to hunt and one of these dozen are the original 12 I bought. I don’t even know a lot about them but I will shoot them as long as they are available. I think 3 broke in five years.

Heck I break carbona on pigs all the time. They are more durable maybe but not indestructible.

Any shaft will bend or break if animal with arrow is rolling over it. Carbon is more durable but not indestructible. I shut carbon because it performs better for me. Easier to tune, can add weight easily, increased penetration. Not as romantic or as nostalgic as wood but I chose overall performance over traditional nostalgia.

Larger pigs and deer will shear them if they go through a shoulder blade and remain in the animal. That's often how mine break. That quartering away shot.
