Title: Black Bear Season Has Begun
Post by: Pointed_stick on September 08, 2022, 08:51:31 AM
Bear season opened here on Tuesday. Managed to get out from early morning into part of the afternoon. No success so far, but the location is right. Woods with oaks and pines. Water on the edge of a field loaded with what I believe are honeysuckle bushes covered in berries. Bear sign in several locations. Spent some time here during spring turkey season, and saw a bear about 20ft away at that time which  brought me back to this spot. Headed back out this Saturday. Still quite warm during the day, and the acorns have not really started to fall just yet. Everything looks promising so far, and we are fortunate to have a good amount of time here to fill a tag before the season closes for the year.

Good luck with your bear hunt.
What are the berries in the last pic? A deciduous holly?

Tuesday was full of thunderstorms and rain...yesterday was good weather. Trying a different spot a few towns over. The last place is still promising, but I found no new sign anywhere on my next trip back. The new place has more water holes, tall oaks, and fields. Much bigger overall, about 1400 acres, and adjacent to a large conservation area. Found more bear/coyote scat here, although looks like the bear is smaller than the previous location. Beautiful morning, with the sun and moon in the sky at the same time. I saw 1 deer walking through some thick cover about 100 ft off the trail I was on, and found many tracks.

Also, if anyone has any ideas what type of skull this is that would be great. Fairly poor condition, looks like a 22 went in the back. Interesting find all the same.

Spent the morning off the trail tucked in next to a small stream with bear sign that looked fresh this morning. Heard what sounded like a large, probably bear size animal about 150 yards away through the thick growth. It moved closer to about 100 yards still no visual. After about 20 minutes to a half hour of it staying at that distance I tried slowly stalking in to get a line of sight on the critter. I move closer...it would move further away. Almost no wind at all in the woods the last few times I have been out, not sure that works in my favor. Within 10 yards of a deer today, and did see a porcupine...but no bear just yet. Also found some "chicken of the woods" growing on a fallen tree...not enough confidence in my wild mushroom identification skills to take it home even though this 1 is fairly easy to spot.

Thank you! Not getting quite as much time in as I would like. Should be back out tomorrow though.

Hope your efforts are successful in all ways.

Those berries and leaves don't look like the honeysuckle we are burdened with in SW Ohio.

Tomorrow is the last day of the early season here. Am headed out for as long as I can in morning. If I come up empty, the season reopens on Nov. 7th. with a chance at deer in between starting half way through October.  :campfire:

It was beautiful day, no bear for me though. Spent the morning in 1 location, and moved to a different piece of woods for the afternoon. 2nd spot had some fresh scat, but still no luck. Caught a nice nap in the middle part of the day...
