Title: $3200 bow?????
Post by: F. Dobbs on September 07, 2022, 03:07:21 PM
This one has been on a wild ride.... I killed a bunny with it but didn't sign the sock.  Someone's going to get a steal on history with this bow. Not sure folks are paying attention so thought I'd help.

I talked to a friend yesterday that is VERY well known in the trad bowhunting world and mentioned the lack of interest in not only this bow but history in general. I told him I have been precieving over the last few years the decline in people that seem to want to carry on the history along with education of our 'fore fathers'.....

He said, and I quote....

"They don't know it and don't care.   Their heroes are on Instagram".

That is truly sad to hear.
I wonder how they feel about the Holy Bible...?

Yes it is sad, and I don't understand why some folks don't care how we got to where we are today all's they care about is that we here and how can I get mine with out putting in the time or effort.

First, Last, and ALWAYS... Fred Bear, was my childhood hero!!

My Grandpa made me bows out of split saplings about the time I learned to walk.
For my 5th Christmas, I got my first "real" bow, a Bear "Red Bear" recurve...

That started my journey, and brought me to where I am today.
My first hunting bow, was a 50# Bear "Alaskan" with yellow and lime green limbs.
Cloth limb covers, then camo tape, and finally camo paint, helped it blend in...
I killed my first 2 deer with that bow, in 1976 & 77. They were both does.
I hunted with that bow, untill about 1985? All of my friends had already switched to compounds.
I had continued to use my old Bear recurve. I put a Bear Weatherest on it, and shot Easton Gamegetters with plastic vanes and screw in Razorheads.

I bought a compound, a Bear "Whitetail Hunter" because I couldn't find a badly needed new string for my recurve.
I shot without sights, and my 3 fingers... I could hold my own against any other shooters.
A few years later, I bought another compound, a split limb Bear "Whitetail II"
It was supposed to be "better" "faster"... etc. My friends were buying a new bow every year or two...
I became disenchanted with the whole compound thing, and gave up bowhunting....

I had a friend, who was hell-bent on getting me back into bowhunting....
I told him, "Bob, IF I ever bowhunt again, it will be with a recurve & wood arrows..."

Early 2000's I found a local guy who sold traditional equipment out of his basement.
His name was Joe Skipp, and he used to be a member here....
A used Bear Kodiak Mag, a dozen cedar arrows, and a Berlin deerskin glove... It was 1976 again!!!
20 years later.... Here I am!!! :archer:

Folks here chide me, (good naturedly) when I post "Fred Bear did this" LOL
I get comments like "Well, you're not him and niether are we" and "Well, if he was here today..."
We must remember... We have a HISTORY!!! It's up to us to pass it along!!
For if we don't, it will all be lost....

Great stuff woodchucker.... forcsure.

Let me gather some thoughts...

Well, Terry... I think what you are doing, is good!!!
You are offering a chance for someone who enjoys, and appreciates our history, to own a piece of it. :archer:

If I were to win it... I can't shoot it, it's simply too heavy for me!!  :help:

I could make a custom rack, and hang it in Little Bear's new house...??
That seems kind of selfish.... Like buying a famous painting, just so YOU can enjoy it... :dunno:
It would be nice, to continue the "pass around"...
But, I don't think I have the computor skills, nor the brain power, to get it started?? Let alone keep it going...

I do know this!! When I die, it will go to my sons. IF, they ever decide to get rid of it...
It will go somewhere that it's history and tradition, will be passed along, for future generations.
(Maybe even back to TradGang) :campfire:

THAT, will be carved into my Will :readit:

Btw, I saw the other thread. I don't understand people that don't ever kill anything  promoting other people that don't kill anything. Must be a fbook fad

You obviously don't know the people your talking about or anything about their hunting success. The name calling on this site is truly sad. I don't do Facebook or any other social media, just Trad Gang and your comments do nothing but degrade Trad Gang.

...I'm very eager to see who will be the New owner of this very special bow. Be nice to see her make the rounds again. She can still set a rack of  admeration/memory/respect if or when she fails...just a thought of finishing what she started. It was a beautiful thing seeing this old bow do all these hunts in all those different locations. That is the really "SPECIAL" part  about this kodiak........

I shot a nice fox squirrel with her the last evening before I had to ship her out. Put a good hit on it...bad is it was late evening and the squirrel had another with it that kept barking enough mine somehow managed to snake higher up the tall beech tree before going limp high-up in a fork at last light.   It almost fell several times , but fate and the relentless barking  keep it moving to the top of the tree. When I returned in the morning @ first light with rope to climb , the squirrel was gone.
Owl...or taken by a early morning hawk.... fell in the night and taken by a fox-yote ??? I'll never know sadly.....

I did make sure several family members got to loose a few arrows from this  Very special old Bear bow. My then young son (with a much younger wolf:)) getting in the time when we had it ....Best of luck to everyone !

sincerely

I’ve resisted posted about this whole drama. Terry has the right to ban anyone that posts contrary to what we are about. Those guys were banned because of what they had to say about how the original bow was purchased for a lot of money. The problem I have is to disparage a couple of the guys that some of you say never killed anything is totally wrong. Whip (Joe Lasch) and Greg Dudley have killed numerous animals. Joe has had some pretty incredible kills of animals other than just whitetail deer. They, like a lot of us older guys, choose not to post our kills because we would rather see and read about some of the newer guys to Trad post their kills. I could name quite a few including Terry. Some of you throwing rocks haven’t  posted kills so leave that out out of your disparagement of them.
They were banned for their beliefs on how the bow was won which was wrong.
To me, any problems some of you guys have here should be addressed directly to Terry or just use the facts as you know them. Which is, what they posted about how the bow was won in the first place. I think this it is a great thing Terry is doing by offering this bow up for sale to further the mission of Tradgang.
Terry can throw rocks because he knows the real deal as to what went down. Most of you don’t.
Sorry Terry…rant over.

Please note the date of this post... this is when I was accused of 'crashing the server' to steal the bow....

I haven't read 'the thread' of so called accusations elsewhere, but here's the scoop.....

I won the bow in the 2007 St Judes auction as it was donated by the previous owner free and clear of any strings.  As those that were here know the server crashed somewhere in the last couple of minutes even though we had gotten a new server hoping to prevent the events of the year before.  Back then we had only one bid forum and one closing night with 9 pages of items.  That one auction raised over $90,000.

The server had to be re-booted by our host,(called by Rob) and until that happened no body knew who won what. Our host said that some members had as many as 12 pages open and  all that last minute sniping just shut her down.  It scared me to death as I had no clue if the server could even be revived. I have never seen our server, and its not even in this country

For that reason this year we linked two servers had four different forums closing 4 different nights to hopefully prevent that and it worked.

I bid on the bow because I wanted to 'semi retire' it to protect and preserve it and its history. It has been to TX on a group hunt, and to the Paradise on St Judes hunts. The bow is scheduled to go out for the last two weeks of this month, and again for the last two weeks of November. I might even hunt with it for a while after that, and then it will go on other group hunts after the 1st of the year.  The bow is still hunting, just a little differently than before.

Certain folks registered and their 1st posts were attempts to stir up stuff about the bow, and yes, since their sole purpose was to cause problems they were banned. One guy from AL registered at least 3 times just to do so.

I haven't miss represented the bow or myself, or caused the bow any harm.  As some of you know, I fixed the bow's limb twist and gave it a new travel tube.

All the LDB hunt threads are in the Memorable Hunts archived forum.

Too bad that since winning the bow, its been used as a club to beat me with by those that evidently don't like the idea of me having it, and folks that were banned from here for causing problems.  I'm sure this wont stop them from hollering either.

I'd like to thank everyone for their comments here and through emails.  It means more than you know.

No, I had 3 days of computer issues. So frustrating when you aren't a tech wizard like Rob and you don't know what happened, whats wrong or how to fix it.
