For all you 500 spine users lets hear your set up. I want to see if im on track. On paper im too stiff but in real life they fly.
-
For hunting, Bob Lee Ultimate, 47#, GT 500 Ultralight arrow with 150 grain broadhead + 50 grain weight behind insert, total arrow weight 426 grains.
For 3D, Bob Lee Shikari, 40#, Victory VAP 500 arrow with 130 grain point, total arrow weight 323 grains.
-
42# longbow, 30” shaft, 250gr up front. (Average, got many bows)
-
45# Bear TD and 50# Northern Mist Shelton. 28-inch draw. 29-inch Easton Axis with 275 or 300 up front.
-
Cari-Bow Peregrine 49lb @ 27 inches. GT Traditionals .500 spine 29.25inches 190grain broadhead. 443 grains total weight 27 inch draw.
-
For hunting:
500 spine GT Warrior shaft at 29.5 inches; 100 gr brass insert; 5 gr aluminum carbon collar; 125 gr. woodsman or snuffer; 6 inch wrap; glory nock; 3 4-inch feathers. About 22% FOC. About 500 grains, give or take a little. For 3-D I just use a regular nock and 125 gr field point.
I can also substitute Traditional Only 500 shafts on the above set up.
I am now working on and testing:
400 spine Carbon Tech Cheetah shafts at about 30 inches; 125 gr insert; 190 gr head (single bevel or three blade); the rest is as above.
This combo should be about 550 or so grains with 30% or more FOC. This could be a good hog arrow.
My bow is a 45 pound Centaur Triple Carbon Elite.
-
Impala Express, 44#, 27.75" draw. Black Eagle X-Impact, 500, 29.625", 47 gr outsert + 175 grain point. 409 gr total arrow weight.
-
Have you guys bare shaft tested these set ups?
-
GT Hunter 500’s cut to 30 1/2”, with either 100gr inserts or 100 gr broadhead adaptors and 160 Ace Standards with 4” shields. The field points fly like darts getting ready to see which broadhead set up gets chosen for the season now.
-
I always bare shaft when I develop a new shaft.

I bare shaft test every new setup I try. Even though I have tried many different setups on many different bows over the years, I am continually surprised to find out that the setup that works best is not always the combination that I had anticipated would work best.

Black Widow PTF 37#@29". Black Eagle Vintage 500, 31" 145. Perfect tune bare shaft. Also works in my Great Plains Kiowa 40#@29".
-
These are black eagle instincts .500 spine 30.5" with 225 up front shot from an honest 30 yards ( I usually don't shoot this well). The bow was a Wengerd Chamois longbow 39# -- closer to 37# at my draw.
-
Toelke Whistler 46#
29” Easton Axis Traditional 500
85 gr Ethics insert and collar
175gr broadhead.
Three 3” fletching.
520gr total.
-
Wes Wallace R/D LB. 55#@28. 145 grain BH and 75 grain brass insert. Arrow cut to 29”. Bare shaft test was at Black Widow class and with Ken Beck’s tutoring.
-
50# and 47# Bear Kodiak takedowns, 29” GT traditional XT 500s, 5” fletch.
150 up front or 250 up front for hunting.
-
Hoyt Satori with 50lb. Uukha Vx1000 limbs at 28" draw. My arrow is a 3Rivers Traditional Only 500 shaft. The shaft is cut to 30" with a 130gr. head and 50grain brass insert. Total arrow weight is 470 grains. The Uukha limbs are usually referred to as the super recurve type, I've found this type of limb requires a weaker arrow than one would anticipate. I'm sure this is caused because this type of limb loads up early in the draw cycle and then "relaxes" at the end of the draw cycle. The so called "letoff sensation". I always bareshaft all my setups.
-
I will be testing out some 500s soon out of my 50# triple carbon Centaur. Been shooting 400s out of it as of now with 175 grain heads. Standard aluminum adapters.
-
Sounds like im on track. Im shooting R/D longbow #40@26. Arrows are GT trads cut at 28” with 250 up front. 515 grains,12.8gpp
-
My Bigriver bows are all around 50lb. at my draw length. I shoot the Widow wannabe Bigriver the most. I shoot beman 500s at 30", 75 grain brass insert and 200gr. points. I have shrunk my feather size to 3" and they fly as good as possible.
-
I posted above about my 39# Wengerd tuning w 500s. In contrast my Toelke 10X Whip which is 42#@28 tunes very well with 700 spine axis cut to 29 3/8" w 125 up front. I mention this to show the significant variance I experience between set ups. I always have to spend time tuning each bow/arrow to find what will work for me. Every bow, every shooters, and every string will yeild different results. The Wengerd is the only bow I've ever had in that weight range that tuned w .500s.
