Who's the old fart shooting the bow ?
-
Mad Max, I'd love to see a tutorial on the rattan handle wrap!
-
It's James Parker
It's simple really, you have to soak it in water for a while or it will snap into.
Put some wood glue for the first wrap and overlay the starting end and more glue at the end.
Here is the starting end.

Did Y'all see that old bow they found in the rocks when the ice melted away..?? Well they found an inscription on it... It was very worn and hard to read but they believe it said "ROY"... Some experts in ancient history did some research and came to the conclusion that the title stood for "Old Soggy Britches"... Old lore says the maker of that bow still exists to this day...
Sorry Roy... Could not pass on this one... You know we Love Yah...

Here is the how too on the rattan wrap
I soaked it for about a hour while I was doing other things so it wont' break while wrapping.
And I have my arrow rest in place.
Side view of the rattan .080 thick.
I tape it in place with strapping tape and put some Tite bond 3 on the riser, not much and start wrapping
(https://i.imgur.com/2AtoO7N.jpg)
keep adding glue as I go and wipe off excess from the start.
I cut the tail off leaving 6/8" or so
(https://i.imgur.com/n9x3obh.jpg)
Pull it real tight and razor blade it off and add a clamp
(https://i.imgur.com/4ptNi2x.jpg)
I go back to the start and taper the end down narrow, more glue and a clamp.

Tha5 came out looking pretty clean bro…. Now what type of finish do you use to preserve that material, and how does it hold up? Kirk
-
I'm going to put some dye on it, then mask off the bow riser area and spray the rattan with the same finish on the bow. I use the wheel paint clear Matte
It's been used for many years on selfbows and horn bows.
Holds up good
-
It looks very cool…. I’ve had some very old fishing poles with that type of wrap years ago…. I may still have a couple up in the rafters somewhere. I like the looks.
Kirk
-
I put a little brown dye on a small piece of paper towel and kind of dry rubbed some on the rattan so it wasn't so white looking, should have done more.
-
It looks like ya threw it in the dirt a couple times there bro… :biglaugh: I liked it better white.
After sealing it, I don’t think adding more dye is going to work very well now. But…. you can always just add more dirt and wax…
All kidding aside… those are cool looking grips. Kirk
-
:biglaugh: Dirt may have done a better job
-
Seriously…. Have you ever seen how natural clay stains clothing? Especially the red clay. Man it don’t get more traditional than dirt bro! :biglaugh:
Next one you try, you could just mix up some good old mud and wipe it down, let it dry, then wash it off. Might look pretty cool!
-
Yep
