Ok guys need your opinion on these bows? Seriously considering ordering one. Looking at Mountaineer model. Any one own one like your input.
I have his follower extreme and like it a lot. Quality craftsmanship and easy fellow to work with.
I've talked with him super nice guy, the friendliest bowyer I've ever talked with
I have his Follower Extreme as well and it is a great ASL for the money. It is the only ASL that I own and it is very quiet and has no noticeable hand shock. He was very nice in person and delivered what I asked for and a short turn around. I think you would be well pleased.
I know this doesn't necessarily help with model-specific info, but I will say I bought my son one of his Pup longbows. It is very well madeānot what you'd expect from a kids' bow! Mike was very responsive and got the bow delivered on time, which was already a short turnaround.
He also makes the bows for kids to giveaway regularly here on TG. I know that doesn't speak to the quality of his products, but it does to his character. I like doing business with guys that invest in the Trad community!
I just looked at his web site and don't see anything about core wood choices so I am assuming the core would be maple, am I right? and only maple or "special" choices on riser wood. For those who have bought from Mike what sort of choices did you have?
There are a lot of wood choices. Down at the bottom of the bow page there is a blue hyperlink for bow wood choices.
Thanks, I guess I missed it--old eyes, thanks I found it--great wood choices thumbsup:
I had one, shouldn't have gotten rid of it.
I think that is the riser wood selection,I didn't see the limb core material anywhere either.
I bought a 64" MadDog Mountaineer last fall and love it. Mine has a cocobolo riser and the limbs are red elm with clear glass. The bow is very smooth to draw and shoot. It's a beautiful bow, pictures here don't do it justice.

That is a beautiful bow!!! Really like the combo. I'm actually thinking of going with green glass.
I won a Pup several years ago for my grandson. This is a very nice beginner's bow, and I highly recommend it. Sammy Boy has outgrown it, but it is just perfect to pass down for Little Sister. I have a new Pup on order for the grandson, which should be here in a few more weeks. While I don't know much about Mike's other bows, I figure that if his entry level bows are nice, his more advanced ones should also be quite good.
Thanks for all the kinds words everyone. But truth be told, having great customers makes it easier to remain motivated, and you all got that part covered.
Now on to limb core lams: I use red elm. Unless a customer insists I use something else, red elm is my go to core wood. It's light, durable, fully, and quickly recovers, and it's hard to beat. No bamboo, I'm so allergic to the dust I can barely stand to be around it.
Great bows :shaka:
Yep, what he said ^^^
Got a 64 in Mountaineer on order!!!
Good, they've been Sponsors here at Tradgang for 417 years. :goldtooth:
I told myself I wouldn't buy a bow without handling it, but all I heard was how sweet they are so I decided to chance it.
I have a Red Elm core D-shape longbow for a different maker, but the bow shoots hard with that wood.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2:
I just ordered another Maddog bow a week or two ago, for my 13yo daughter. She's had 2 other Maddogs ... as a matter of fact, she ain't never had nothin' but a Maddog. (That sounds like it ought to be a song...!)
If memory serves me right, between my daughters and nephews, I've gotten about 5 different bows from Mike, and we're satisfied customers! Mike is a great guy to talk to, also.

That's a handsome stick brother. Mike's a great man to patronize, does a lot for our trad younguns 👍
A Quality individual who makes Quality bows.
My follower extreme has red elm and Mike stained them darker along the sides. They look and shoot great, hate really bright limb woods in the woods. Saving for another.
Yesterday, I received the PUP that I had ordered for my grandson. I look forward to giving it to him soon. It is 48" long and draws 34# at 26" draw. His current draw is considerably shorter than that, so I expect this bow to last him until he can buy and select his own equipment. This is a very nice bow for a kid.
Had 2 Longbows with Elm limbs . Love it in looks & performance !
Excellnet job Mike ...that is a real beauty !!!!!
Everyday getting closer to getting my new Mountaineer, waiting is worst part lol

How long is the wait?
When I talked with Mike it was about 8 weeks. Also I think he told me he was taking summer off.
I changed the plans about traveling a bunch this summer. Not the way gas costs right now. I don't have many orders at the moment, It's about 4-5 weeks now.
I've bought a Predator and a Mountaineer from Mike. Great bows and the price is right. And he's super helpful and a good guy on top of that. You can't go wrong. In fact, I need to holler at him to get one of his kids bows for my granddaughter now!!
Good news, was contacted by bowyer he has started my bow!!!
I have had several bows made with Red Elem it makes good bow limbs and looks good under clear glass. I have a 35# Maddog bow with Elem limbs with brown glass that has good cast for the weight of the bow.
Recieved my bow, it is flawless in finish. Cocobolo riser and tips with green glass. 50 lb at 30 in and 64 in long. Very smooth draw and quick, no handshock at all. Will post pics as soon as my stepson helps me probably tomorrow.
Here's pic of my new Mountaineer!
Sorry their sideways first time posting pics
That's a good looking bow.
Thanks I really like it!
My 13 year old daughter's 58" 30# @ 28" Prairie Predator longbow (birthday present) arrived a few days ago. I was taking a chance by getting her a color other than her favorite blues/pinks/purples... But she absolutely loves it.! And she's been shooting every day just because she likes the new bow so much.
The finish is great, the bow is well made and very clean. Probably my favorite of all the MadDog bows I've gotten for my kids through the years. Thanks, Mike!
Does the Mountaineer string into the classic D shape when strung?
No it looks like a hybrid, shoots extremely well and quiet.
Archie, What kind of string silencers do you have on that bow, my bow is a little louder shooting than I like it to be I am making silencers out of yarn but they don't work as good on my bow like yours. Thanks

The string silencers we have on it are a set of "spider silencers" that I had on a spare Black Widow string, and they do a good job silencing the bow. But this is my daughter's bow, she's not really hunting with it (maybe a rabbit hunt here and there), and when I asked her about the silencers, she said that she wanted the spiders because she likes the way they look. This was not a calculated decision.
I put spider legs on mine, extremely quiet
Do you get those from Black Widow bows or some place else?
