Title: 1970 Bear take down
Post by: ashlandjack on February 20, 2022, 10:45:10 AM
I have an around 1970 bear take down that I purchased when I was about 15 years old. I have come all the way around to shooting it again.
Is there someone that sell any parts for these? I am in need of the adjustable side plate. thanks Jack

There is a guy, Monty Dunaway that sells Bear TD stuff. I have his email link on my desktop but, not here on the iPad. If someone else doesn’t post it here today I’ll get it to you later.

Is that a Mag or wood handle?

Wow That is great, thank you very much. The bow is in awful shape to look at. I painted it over 50 years ago and mag. handle finish chipped up. But it still shoots as good as any bow I have owned through the years. Give me a little time and it will shine again.  Thanks again, Jack

You can strip it with”Aircraft Stripper “. I got it at Home Depot. Get a pair of real rubber gloves as well. Stuff will take off skin but it works fast and easy clean up. I had one done using Ceracote like on rifles. The other I had painted by a car restoration guy. Be careful removing those tiny screws, magnesium strips real easy. Finding screws for new threads a pain. Ask me how I know. IMO the best old metal riser out there

Thanks for the advice M60gunner. Do you use a rag and just wipe it off or does it need to soak? Will it damage the original finish?

You may want to consider getting it dipped. There is a guy in Blair, WI. that does an excellent job. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

R A Hoffer is the company. I've had several thing done by them. Very fast turn a round time, and a lot of choices.

Did you have to prep the riser or do they do it?

I did some sanding, smoothed it all out. You will have to take everything off of it. I also had a set of #3 limbs dipped with the same pattern (Real-Tree Xtra Green) and I masked the red tips. If you decide to get it dipped, call them and talk to Randy. He will tell you everything you'll need to do. A very nice company to deal with.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Yes. I shoot all my bows off the shelf. Good luck with yours. Those Bear Mags are great bows, well worth restoring.
