Title: Weekends in the bush, bow in hand....PICS.
Post by: Al Kidner on May 04, 2008, 05:30:00 AM
G'day all,

Well with a sniff of an area that may hold a few deer, I made up my mind to spend the weekend with my boy Samuel & do a bit of "Doorknocking" of properties to get hunting permission.

On our 2nd try we struck gold with permission to hunt a property and look around for pigs and especially Deer. The owner tells me a few deer travel through his place from time to time. He even pointed us in the direction of a good camping spot for the night.

Sam and I made a hasty camp as we already spotted a fine Stag near a waterhole. So it was dump the swags, coolers and put on the camo.

Along the way a bit of stumpshooting was in order. I sent my judo in the small hole in this termite mound.

I also found another termite mound started up this tree, made for a good shot.... man I just love my new widow longbow! Shoots like a dream!

We had some locals "helping" us along the days wonderings as well. These wallabies will end any stalk on Deer.

More to come...

Thanks for the good coments lads. As for Deer this was what I was after. Although this fella is from another place I have up my sleeve. On my new place (that is only two hours drive from home) has the same critters as well. This pic made the front cover of our bowhunting mag...

Back to the tale... Sam and I walked a tree line as well as some open country to look the place over and to see just what sign was about and also to see where the deer where hanging.

We spotted a few rub trees but the sign was not very fresh...

And along the way also Sam spotted the ant eater in the grass just doing his thing. Once you walk up to 'em they freese and rool themselves into a ball. Makes it hard to get a pic also stops the dingos eating 'em as well.

A close up....

We only spotted a stag that day and he was on to us as we were pushing ourselves through some think scrub, when we busted out the other side there he was standing looking at us from 60 odd yards away. I did not get a pic as flashing thoughts of trying to put in a stalk on him were running through my mind.

So it was back to camp for dinner of cooked sausages and billy tea.Sam had enough of walking and all he could talk about was swimming in the water hole back at camp. His hunting legs will come to him over the comming years, I forgot I like to walk all day. Rather hard on a 10 year old.

The next morning we headed out again. It was only going to be a morning walk as we were needed home due to renovations on our bathroom and kitchen that I needed to finish off. No rest for the wicked!

Here is another few shots of our camping area...

And this is something left over from the Mining in the area years ago...

Again we walked the area just to get the feel of the place. I spotted these flowers on some cactus...

We walked and walked but only found some more rub trees. Just on lunch we stumbled upon a small group of pigs and Sam was off on the chase but they gave him the slip in the long grass. The wind was not the best either.

So with that we made our way back to camp to pack up and head home after thanking the owner for letting us on his place. We were welcomed back anytime with only a phone call to let him know. As I said it's only a two hour drive from home so I think this new place of mine will be getting it's fair share of hunting done on it.

As for the Chital deer, well there not as thick as my other spot but it makes it up in being close to home. The Deer are there... I just have to work 'em out!

Thanks for looking,

Regards,

AK.

Al,

Please explain your comment about Wallabies. "These wallabies will end any stalk on Deer." Are the deer using the Wallabies body language as a warning system?

Yes Tom, your spot on mate. The the Deer use the wallabies as sentries/scouts as well as birds too. When putting in a stalk and the deer hear or see anything out of the norm your done.
