-
Bow shipping in morn , oh wait I don’t know who to ...
-
Glad your feeling better Chris!
-
Calm down there Kenny
-
Sorry guys, I am running behind here as you may have guessed. I will have names to you tonight before I go to bed (first thing in the morning for most of you). My apologies again!
-
No worries Chris, I was just smartazzin around !! Take your time and heal up man!
-
Hope ya get well soon Chris
-
Thanks guys! I'm mostly better at this point. The only real lasting effects is this ridiculous fatigue and shortness of breath. I get winded doing mundane things like standing around a toolbox with my guys, or getting dressed in the morning... Also find it nearly impossible to stay awake in the afternoon if I sit down for too long. Odd stuff...
Matches almost done, PMs going out in the next hour or so.
-
Ok, PMs are out. Let me know if you have any questions. Have at it boys!
-
I hope you get well soon and have a good swap.
-
Did you go see your Doctor?
Get well
-
Max, I called them up to see what they could do because I'm looking to get back in the gym. They said there wasn't really anything to do other than trying to reacclimate through exercise.
For all my builders: If you haven't sent me your contact info in a PM, please do so ASAP. Don't make me hunt you down!

I looked around my bow room tonight and couldn’t decide on what I’m gonna build for my victim. I’m gonna use the materials I have on hand. I have to much wood sitting around not being used.
-
Post ur wood pics we will help you decide what to use :bigsmyl:

4point I would pick the last board on the right in the first pic.
-
Looking good Bue :biglaugh:
-
No big updates from me today...
I went and got riser material and limb material is on the way.
-
I bought cloth for a bow sock… 😁
Well, you have to start somewhere! :knothead:
Really though, bamboo, core wood and riser materials are all waiting in the shop for a warmer weekend.
Dave.
-
:bigsmyl: Guess I will start off the pics. It was actually warm enough to open the big door today.
I decided to go with stuff I have on hand right now. Some black locust for riser and wedges. A bit of osage and green in the riser.
I have some Australian sycamore that might be veneers.

Stic, your getting after it. I made a plan but now I can’t find the wood I thought I had that I was gonna use for the accents so it’s on to plan b
-
This looks like a great time....I will probably join in the next one after a few more builds under my belt. Look forward to watching this one from the sidelines....best of luck to all the "victims" :coffee:
-
Stic, I'm bettin that limb wood wood have some great figure in it! :biglaugh:
Your bench looks like mine, right down to the 6" combo square rusted exactly like that!!
-
I am thinking that upside down tree kinda sez how the last couple of years have messed up.
There is a flag in the background tho.
-
Bigfoot I think.

It’s a start ... :goldtooth:

Don't make me come out there Roy-boy!
-
BOY?
Heck yed fall asleep half way here Sweetie Papa:)
-
Fall asleep?? HA not me, I'd stop and take a dang nap. :biglaugh:
-
Ok so I think I'm going into new territory here and I'm going to build a takedown osage selfbow. Been storing these billets for years and decided it's time. They will need some correction but the backs are very clean so I think they will turn out just fine. I may try the fiberglass sleeve. If not I have a set of sleeves I bought from 3 rivers. Haven't decided yet [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Getting a warmup Monday so will be in the shop then.
-
Yep with the price of fuel I’ve not been heating up much unless needed .
-
I think this is gonna be my swap bow if it turns out. Everything made and ready for some glue.
-
Nice! What are the woods? And the green pieces.
Dave.
-
Some really nice Shedua and Birdseye. The green is 3m water base tape one the glass
-
I thought it looked like tape. Don’t mind me, being a wood and bamboo guy, I don’t normally tape up lams…
The wood looks really nice.
Dave.
-
That is nice shedua Travis!
-
Lookin good 4 point
-
Kenny, I’ve been staring at it for week trying to decide what would go good with the shedua
-
I think you got a good combo going !
-
All glued up and ready to drill some holes.
-
Birdseye maple.? Nice , what wood is the riser? That's gonna look nice together!
-
The riser is Shedua
-
Hmm moving right along there.
-
Very nice.
-
Have been moving along on the riser, adding accents and additional overlays of Maple Burl. Trying something a bit removed from my usual process, and adding an outer accent around the entire ends of the riser, eliminating as much end grain as possible. Will see how it works out after cutting the grip and sight window and pulling all the tape.

Very nice, Uli...
-
I like that Uli! Very nice. Do you cut your shelf at center?
-
OOO thats a nice one for someone..
I managed to get my riser in and out of the profile jig today. The next step will be glass or carbon on the front or maybe both. The last pic is the press for the front overlay. after that I have a jig to glue overlays on the limb pad area also.

Very nice Mike! One day I’d love to have a sander like that too, but I’d have to move the freezer out of the shop to make space, and the boss says that’s not likely, ever.
Travis, I cut the height of the radius of the shelf about 1/4” above center, and the window is cut 1/8” past center.
-

Travis, I cut the height of the radius of the shelf about 1/4” above center, and the window is cut 1/8” past center.
I'm curious why you chose to cut the shelf so low? Standard is 3/4"-7/8" above center. Arlo
-
Glued on some overlays today, sorry no pics. :dunno:
Two left to go and then to shaping riser ...
-
Arlo - I like to keep the top of the grip hand and the arrow (on its rest) as close as possible. That being said, the 1/4” above center is approximate, and I will still be laying 2 layers of accent onto the shelf after its been cut and shaped. Depending on the rest used, the arrow might be closer to 3/4” above. “Standard” in my opinion means a generally accepted norm, its not a rule, so anything that works well goes.
-
I glued glass and twill on the front of the riser. Will do the pads tomorrow.
I have seen shelves anywhere from almost center to 2 1/4 above center. Actually on one of my longbow designs I have one that was 2 in. Above center tillered 1/8 stronger bottom limb for me shot better than anything else.
-
Started the first fitting. Wow is this a slow process. Fit-file-fit-file.. but slowly getting it
-
That's some nice grain on that yellow wood
-
Just gonna call this clamped. Put twill on the limb pads. Had to do a lot of clamping so everything stays put.
-
Everything is roughed out, straight and poundage is good. Weather looks like crap this weekend so I should be able to get the overlays on and riser shaped.
-
Me thinks that one can come to So.IN.
-
Nice guy's
-
I got the riser ground down to width. The twill looks pretty good on it. Got some wedges made. I have english sycamore for veneers Should leave them plain or light brown stain??
Or I might try newspaper veneer victim could read while waiting on deer.

Dave.

Comics ha Roy be in there then. :biglaugh:
-
There’s some very impressive stuff showing up already! Good thing this isn’t a competition! Just gathering some limb components, Grandillo and Yew for the back under the clear glass, edge grain bamboo, black belly, Wenge wedge. *Note to self - never buy Grandillo again! :banghead:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
That is gorgeous combo! New to all this, why no more Grandillo?
-
Stic, I think they’ll look good plain. The glue should darken them up a bit.
-
Uli, that’s gonna be a looker!
-
That is gorgeous combo! New to all this, why no more Grandillo?
I’ve only ever seen it offered in small “turning” blocks, for pens or whatever, so when a 24” x 2” x 2” block showed up I figured I could use it for some laminations. My bandsaw blade wants to do a U-turn the instant it hits it, so I had to switch to a bi-metal. The drum sander with 80 grit keeps clogging with burns, so it must have a high oil content. And I can’t use it on the tip of the limb if its a recurve cause even a .050 lam won’t make the turn. Looks nice, but I’ll stick to figured or Claro walnut.
-
Done gluing overlays and got my tips roughed out. Might work on shaping the riser tomorrow. It's not gonna be fun, Shedua is hard stuff!
-
Lookin good Travis!!
Last shedua I used the finish didn't wanna dry on it...
-
I’ve built one bow out of this block already and I didn’t have any problems with finish. I wonder if yours had some moisture in it still. I like the stuff but it sands hard.
-
That's some fine tip work!
-
Think I sprayed it with poly , second coat gummed up
Quite awhile ago so could be wrong
-
Shedua dust got me bad. 1 1/2 years going to a lung doctor .
-
Thanks PV, still have to even them up a little.
Dang Oldrawhide, That’s tough! I’ve been lucky so far with wood allergies making bows. I don’t use cocobolo though, I was fitting a set of grips on a 1911 once and it made my eyes and my nose feel it was on fire.
-
I was thinking I had a productive day yesterday till I pulled the tape off my overlays and one of them was taped on the sanded side. Pealed it off and it’s back in the oven with a new piece of glass. :banghead:
-
Got everything ready for final sanding. Shoots good for me. I kinda like it, hopefully my pick thinks it's okay.

-
Man that's gonna be a stunner when you get some finish on it!!
-
Thanks Kenny, I still have enough of that board for 2 more bows. I might have to build myself one out of it if I can ever get time.
-
Nice choice of woods 4 point
-
Somebody gonna be a happy camper.
-
Very nice Travis..
-
More overlays today , bout one more days worth and I'll be ready to shape the grip.
-
Prolly will grind the cores today. Have wedges already made and need to tape glass also.
-
Make sure you tape the smooth side Stic, don’t ask how I know.
-
Ha I done that once to but caught it before too late :biglaugh:

-
Very nice, Mike..
-
I am trying a new riser layout with the belly glass passing through the middle. Here was my prototype cutting last night before I break out the nice wood.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
You have a CNC router? Did you make it or what brand is it?
-
Its better at cutting than I am :biglaugh:
This one is BobsCNC. I'll probably build my next one that I can set up to rough out an entire bow.
-
Was it hard to learn how to use it?
-
The package said those are Australian sycamore. They are true sliced veneer. But remind me of maple when cutting to width. Anyhow Got one limb under pressure.

Was it hard to learn how to use it?
I took a 9 hour class and had zero cad experience and I do ok. With the easier programs it is relatively easy. I like V Carve Pro.
-
I could really jack some stuff up with a cnc machine. Me and computers don’t usually get along
-
-
Its much easier than you think. If I can figure it out, anyone can. I can't even imagine how some of these bigger bow manufacturers are using these machines...
-
Some nice work going on here.
Been waiting on Mother nature to turn the heat up a bit. Had good weather today(snow expected for the weekend) so I spent a little time in the archives......
Haven't posted a pic on here in the last decade ,hope it works
-
I haven’t got much done on my swap bow. It’s been too cold and damp in the shop. I do have a couple of risers that I had made for future bows and some tapered core lams.
When I was going through my stash of bamboo slats, I came across a few nice ones that are carbonized. They have really wide spaced nodes. No more than three or four over a six foot length. I’m wondering if they would be good as backings.
Has anyone built a bamboo backed bow using carbonized bamboo?
Dave.
-
All I got right now
LOL

Some awesome looking stuff going on! I am in the process of choosing some veneers for my victim. Wondering if I should go with something gnarly or a more standard look. Hmm...
-
Looks kinda stringy to me
-
Got any pics of your veneers Chris?
-
Apologies in advance to my victim. I had trouble with my bolt holes and clouded the glass around them. Can’t see it together only taken down. Was gonna put overlays over them but I don’t like the looks of that so it is what it is.
-
Gnarly is better.
-

I guess you could put a piece of felt on the limb there? Or spray bedliner on it? :saywhat:
-
I like both ways Chris...
BTW, how you feelin?
-
The bed liner would be classy Kenny.
-
I was kinda kiddin, but I did spray it on a bow for handle wrap with pretty good no slip result...
-
Instead of an overlay mask the area off a little past where the pad is (maybe 1/4 in. showing. Flat black before the clear.
-
To late Stic. Last coat is on. Never notice it when it’s together. My victim will just have to leave it in one piece
-
It'll be great Travis, need my addy? :biglaugh:
-
It’s to curvy for you Kenny. You don’t like those nasty recurves
-
Recurve or longbow, it doesn’t matter. As long as it’s a traditional bow. I just like them all. 😁
And a little blemish doesn’t matter either. Especially when it’s in an inconspicuous place.
The weather is supposed to be warmer this week, so I’ll be working on my victim’s bow. In the meantime I have been working on a little something for a good friend of mine. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
This is something I can do in the house during crappy weather.
Dave.
-
I can make an exception, Travis.... :goldtooth:
That is exceptional, Dave!!
-
Thanks Kenny. These keepsake boxes make good winter projects.
Dave.
-
Travis, no pictures as I haven't bought them yet. The pistachio is always a solid choice in my opinion, but was also considering something more normal like zebra or whatever. I would link some stuff but not sure if that's legal.
Kenny, feeling better! My lower back is worn out every day and still coughing up a bit of stuff. Kinda feels like I did 100 dead lifts or reverse crunches every day.
-
I think either would look great Chris. Glad you're feeling better, I still am not back to my normal energy level after I had it. My hips and back would wake me up at night hurting for about a month after I had it. The stuff effects your body in odd ways.
My victims bow is finished, just need a rest and a string.

Five digits huh Hmmm
Kenny everybody got your number ....... I mean address

I got his # if anyone wants it:)

Finally got the sleeves fitted. Now layout, straightening, add some reflex. The one piece had some thin cracks on the back so I took it down a ring hence the nice yellow lol. There won't be a difference when I'm done. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Nice Mike..
-
Couple of good looking takedowns shaping up there
Spent the last 3 afternoons getting the shop ( that doubles as a garage in snow season) in order.
Aside from the mice building a home in the box with my new feed belt for the drum sander and being sent the wrong grit belts for that sander everything went well.
Got the veneers ground and the riser block ready to shape.
Plan to finish the riser and grind the bamboo tomorrow and get the bow in the oven on Saturday
-
Just glued on tip overlays today and got another block glued up also.
-
I finally got out and went through my bow building stash. I mostly wanted to go through the core lams I have. There was a set of osage and a set of cherry cores and I got out some walnut, hickory, maple, as well as more cherry and osage. I cut all that down to my rough dimensions and now they need to spend some quality time with the drum sander and taper jig. 🙂
For risers, I have two nice sister risers from last year and the year before. I also have a nice zebra wood and blackwood riser that has been waiting to be built.
There’s a good bit of riser wood in the shop as well, if my poor victim isn’t crazy about the sister risers.
Dave.
-
I cleaned the shop (somewhat) today, and got the swap bow back on the bench. Got all the overlays on , need to shape the tips, then the riser .
I gotta get to it because it will be turkey season soon and don't want anything making me want to stay home from that! :biglaugh:

Turkey's huh then you must be going to PA. To hunt
-
Nuff outta you Spanky....

Very nice profile!! Good looking too
-
I’ve got everything ready for glue up in the morning. Screwed up my original riser block I was going to use :banghead: :banghead:. Luckily I had a big chunk of black walnut laying around so I was able to cut out a new riser out of that. Hopefully I’ll have some pictures to post in a day or so.
-
That looks great Stic.
Dannon, have you had any luck with walnut in a riser? I had one break and it’s scared me off from it. I have some Claro walnut but I’ve been putting off using it. I don’t like the looks of Ibeam’s.
-
4point, I’ve never used it before! I figured it was a pretty hard wood, now you got me second guessing it! I may need to order another block from Kenny. Thanks for the heads up!
-
I wouldn’t listen to me. Could’ve been bad luck. Maybe someone else will weigh in that has more experience with it.
-
If you use the walnut be sure your edge grain is front to belly. An Ibeam of stronger wood would be best. And glass on the front don't hurt either.
-
Only needing tips shaped and my victims bow be ready for some finish.
-
Got the bow cleaned up and limbs profiled and roughed out.
-
Word to my victim. This black locusts riser is kinda wavy grain wise being soft a hard parts. Will get it as level as possible. Probably will end up with a dull heavy matte or I call it a spatter finish.

My guess is wenge.
-
It is wenge.
-
No pics butt got base coats on today. And 320ed Ready for top coats.
Prolly next week. Heading to Tradfest this weekend.
-
Love the look of wenge, one of my favorite woods to look at and one of my least favorite to work with.
-
Starting to look like a bow
-
Very nice PV
-
Got first coat of finish on, pics sometime...
-
I’m tapering core lams today. I find this part to be tedious. It takes a lot of passes through the drum sander for each pair as I can only take a small bite at a time to prevent burning.
I’m preparing seven pairs so that I will have a choice of woods to match with the riser I use.
Dave.
-
What core carved.
-
My bows are bamboo backed and bellied tri lams. I was grinding tapered core lams to build with. I have seven pairs ready now. Walnut, maple, cherry, osage and hickory.
I will be preparing a riser and bamboo lams next for a glue up. Hopefully the weather will be good tomorrow. It’s a lot easier for me to work when I can have the door open in the garage.
Dave.

How long have you been building BBB?
Did you learn on your own?
What is your core taper?
In January I went to James Parkers house and he showed me how he makes BBB
Wanting to see you finished bow

-
Looks good kenny :bigsmyl:
-
I think Roy would say "Its Ok"....
-
Max, I’ve been building backed and bellied tri lams for about 10 years. I learned how right here on TG. There was a lot of trial and error and I’m still learning. There’s no hard and fast recipe as each piece of wood and bamboo is different.
Basically, I taper the bamboo back and belly lams from 1/8” to 1/16”. The wood for the core lam has about the same taper rate, but the thickness will vary depending on the draw weight you want.
This is the one I built for last year’s swap.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I built a total of 4 bows last year. Two failed for different reasons, one came in light, but a nice bow, and this one was a bit heavy, but it looks really nice and shoots well.
That’s why I ground so many core lams. If I have a failure, I’ll just move on to the next.
Dave.
-
That’s a nice one there
Heat treated belly too
-
Oh yeah… pull out your torch and burn that belly lam black!
Dave.
-
Got tip overlays on last night. Will try to get riser overlays on this evening.
-
That’s nice! The bar keeps on getting higher every year. Beautiful bows this year.
Dave.
-
Ya Kenny thàt will fit my hand well :bigsmyl:
-
Unfortunately I had a lam slide in the form and I didn’t notice it till I pulled the bow out of the form and started cleaning it up. This resulted in me having to make a 58” bow instead of a 60”. With that being said I’m about 5#’s over on weight at the moment. I should be able to take several lbs’s off after final sanding and trapping the limbs.
-
5# over would not be a problem for me.
Dave.
-
45 my max getting older.
-
Okay victim here ya go. You will find some stuff on the limb pads its Potty ring wax ( a new one)
really good lube for TDs. After a couple of days string strecthing and serving she be ready. Black locust riser and wedges. Australian sycamore veneers. Bamboo cores.

-
Thx
-
Damn Mike that looks awesome...
-
Stic that is awesome! How did you do the green? Is that some of dye.
-
The green is a single spectraply sheet. Cousineau Wood Products now offers them on the site.
10"× 40". They work great for accents. And have used them for veneer also.
Thank you Roy I guess.
-
Beautiful Mike!!

OK ya old coot....

Okay victim your bow in hands of USPS. Sez should be there Friday. Not always accurate tho. PM me when you get it and I will fill you in on some details. There is something extra in there that I won at Tradfest and don't need.
-
Finally finished all other work and got around to getting this bow wrapped up and shipped to the victim. ETA is apparently 8-10 business days, and that’s Expresspost. I’m pretty sure Pony Express was faster, and much cheaper! Didn’t need a new truck this year anyway? :goldtooth:
Riser is figured Black Walnut, overlays are Rosewood, limb pads are bookmatched Rock Elm.
(No toilet ring needed) Limbs are Grandillo/Yew under clear glass, and edge grain bamboo core, black glass belly. Limb butt overlay is Sugar Maple Burl. If victim has any questions please pm. Congrats to all the entries I’ve seen so far, there are so many incredibly talented artisans on this forum!!

So I won two knives at Tradfest this past weekend. That one looks to be made out of a farriers rasp. The other was aMora with a fire starter in the handle.
I think you will find that bow has good manners and good cast. Glad you like it.
-
Excellent cast Mike.
Looks like a farrier rasp, I ve a few here from my BBB days.
Full draw
-
Looks to me like that bow your making will fit my hand :biglaugh:
How far you drawing the curve there? One of my buddies has one with 32 in. Draw and has a bit left in it.
-
Way to go stic
-
About 28.5 " Mike, plenty of draw left in those limbs

Congrats PV! Looks good on you. Stic, another fabulous bow. Thank you for the hard work!

Those are nice Chris! I thought they were spliced until I zoomed in. What wood are they?
x2
-
They are pistachio. Picked them up from Kevin Connor over at Wood From the West. Pistachio orchards cut down unproductive trees and graft new saplings onto those rootstocks, which gives them those weird, sharp demarcation lines. The orchards were using those cut trees for firewood so Kevin grabs as much as he can and cuts into bow veneers among other things. This wood, in my opinion, is so impressive that I use it almost exclusively.
-
Is that black walnut with an english walnut graft? or is it some type of fruit wood? Kirk
-
I'm not sure what rootstocks they use at the orchards, but the scions are pistachio.
-
Well I made another rookie mistake the other day. I was cutting out my sight window and was going to use my table saw to cut along the top of my shelf. My youngest sons kept popping in and out wanting to go fishing, so trying to get in a hurry I cut on the wrong mark! :banghead: :banghead:
I thought the bow was done, I’d have to start a new one. Then I thought I’d just glue a strip of Bacote in the cut with some EA-40. I ran a piece of Bacote through the thickness sander till it would fit in the slot, glued it in and let it dry. I sanded everything down and I believe this is a fix to the mistake. Although noticeable, I believe it will hold. I’ve shot the bow probably 10-20 times. Ready for some final sanding and finish and it’s about done.

I've also received some excellent woods from Kevin over there at Wood From the West and the pistachio is right up there as my fav. In fact it's what I'm using in my current build. 10/10 would recommend

That a lot of clamps sooo it oughta work
-
I get paranoid about even pressure and flatness when the pieces are long like that. The bocote is also 3/8" so I wasn't taking any chances!
-
I have a piece of 7/16 s angle iron 3 in. Wide and a flat piece to go on top and C clamp the riser pieces. And I do well them for line up in a part that is later cut off.
-
Turned out well I think. Opinions welcome, tell me if it sucks now before it's glued into a bow! :biglaugh:

If you want even pressure do like Stic says and use a straight block on top, then apply clamping force to the block.

This bow came from Travis, what an a piece of working art!!!
I shot it a little before dark and it likes a stiff arrow , moved the tie on nock about 1/16 and it was good except arrows were a little weak . I’ll have to find a little different combo for her.
-
Thanks so much Travis, she’s beautiful and fits my hand great!
After seeing this one , I may need to send my victim another one, my classic look bow doesn’t compare to this!!
-
That riser overlay around the sight window that matches the limb veneer is a nice touch!
-
That’s a pretty one Travis! Congratulations Kenny!
-

Well that bow is the best I've ever built, looks wise. It's also 25# over target weight. I'm not really sure what happened but I'm going through my notes and trying to find the problem.
Is it at all possible to remove that kind of weight? Tips are at 5/8" right now so I can narrow it a little more but I'm almost 100% sure that's not going to cut it. Any input is welcome.
Edit: Cleaned it up :banghead:
-
Ouch, 25# is a ton to get off. Don't think you can narrow enough to do it, how thick is the glass on it?
-
0.040" on the glass.
Found the problem, I messed up the weight chart on my spreadsheet and didn't catch it. Squared that away and getting started on the next one.
My apologies for the panic post earlier. A little back story for you guys: I was selected for a 3-week class in the beginning of April that is out of state. The class takes up most of May so I was working to have my bow shipped by the 7th to avoid finishing in the grace period.
New plan, I'll have everything waiting for me when I get back and knock it out asap. I'll mess with the original over the next few days to see how much weight I can get off of it.
-
10 is about the most I ever taken off without a full trap. Some say you can get 9 with an aggressive trapping.
-
I just had one come in 5 pounds over. What side is the best to trap ??
-
5lbs isn't really that much. You could lose that much just rounding edges over really good. I always trapped the back ie back was narrower than belly. You don't have to take off much to lose 5lbs
-
I just took 10#s off one by taking a 16th off each side and rounding the edges. Rounding the edges took off right at 5#s
-
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to see how much I can take off before I leave.
-
Twice as wide 2X strong
Twice as thick8X strong.
I've never tried to take off more than 15# and that was with.050 glass.
With a sanding block and even pressure, counting your passes on the back and belly the weight drops pretty quick.
I'd start with 80 grit then go to finer grits out to 320 on clear ,600 grit on colored checking tiller as you go.
Aggressive trapping on the belly will drop weight quickly but usually creates problems with tips wandering.
-
I just had one come in 5 pounds over. What side is the best to trap ??
The back. You can narrow it substantially without running into the limits of the back FG lam to carry tension. The compression limits of the belly are much lower and narrowing it can get you into trouble much faster than the back.
Mark
-
Went to the local PO to ship this morning and they didn't have the shipping tubes, calls to the 2 other PO in the area ,same results.Ordered some.
All dressed up and nowhere to go.....
-
Good news today! The bosses are working to pull me from the class in Florida due to a sudden manning issue here. Looks like I don't have to build in the grace period!
I'll set this bow aside and finish it later. The veneers are too nice to trap away. On to plan B.
-
I’m no glass bow builder, but could you sand the glass on the back and belly to reduce weight? It’s a really nice bow. It would be a shame to lose any of that veneer.
Dave.
-
I'm going to snag a new set for my victim and just build it correctly this time :biglaugh:
I'll find a different home for the first one down the road.
-
Well, finally made it to town, and I guessed right, it was just as good as I’d hoped!! Thanks very much Kenny, it’s beautifully made as expected!! I remember having commented on the grip in some of your earlier pics, and you were right - it fits perfectly. I love it!! What is the wood? Almost looks like cherry?
The only downside was the comment by the attractive Assistant/Photographer “It seems to shoot better than you normally do?” :archer2: Such is life.
Regards!

I know your feeling. I got me a Kenny bow a couple of years back. That one looks good to.

Glad you like it Noah! It is cherry thru and thru. Trying to get a nostalgic look on it.
After seeing the bow you made for the swap, I almost started over on a fancier model :wavey:! !
Oh ,tell the photographer it's new bow syndrome. Every new bow I make I shoot lights out til I start thinking about the next one...

I spent a few hours today getting ready to get a bow glued up. I got my bamboo flattened and tapered, and also tapered the power lam and tip wedges. The belly lams are tempered and one is clamped in a bending caul. Tomorrow I will bend the other belly lam and I should get her glued up.
While I was planing the bamboo, I got a gentle reminder about being safe while working with power tools. I use push pads to plane bamboo lams, so that my fingers are at a safe distance from the knives. I felt a tug on my sleeve and I saw that the cuff was undone and it had gotten into the cutter head. Fortunately for me, it was just starting to make contact and I pulled it out pretty quickly.
I’m not usually this careless around machinery, and I sure kicked myself over this.
Then I thanked my guardian angel for being there in my moment of stupidity.
More tomorrow. Maybe some pictures too.
Dave.
-
I forgot to mention that this year’s bows are out of this world. I hope that my offering will be up to par.

I spent a few hours planing and tapering bamboo for my plan B bow. I’m pretty sure I know what caused the hinge on my first bow and I’m doing things a bit differently this time. When I do the glue up, I’ll do everything except for the belly lams. I’m going to pre-shape them and glue them on afterwards.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Here’s the first belly lam in the bending caul. I’m giving the belly lams some bend to help them conform to the ramps.

-
Mark, I know you can get the hardware for making wooden boxes at Woodcraft.
-
I had a bow show up today. Some dummy forgot it at the shop. I’ll get some pics tomorrow. Thank you Dannon. Nice bow
-
4 pt, I hope you like it. I’ve seen your work and I hope the bow I built is half as good as the bows you put out! It was originally supposed to be a 60” bow but I had some lams slip in glue up and didn’t notice. I was concerned about the thickness of the limb tips. They seemed kinda thick to me? It’s only the 6th bow I’ve built and I learn a little something with each one! Anyways, I hope you like it!
-
So how many bows been shipped so far

Sorry for the radio silence guys! We are now 6/10 shipped and received. Wood carver, TradBowyer, Nicholi, and I are all in various stages of building.

Dannon, I like the bow. It’s a little stout at my draw but that’s okay. There is plenty of meat in the limbs so I can take some pounds off. I’ve been getting home late this week, I’ll get some pics posted this weekend

Received my bow from Nicholi this week
-
Here is mine. Got to get a string made and she will be on her way. Bocote riser with walnut core and curly hickory. Hard to catch the curl in these cropped pics but it turned out really nice. Hope it's acceptable.
-
Looks great Tim! That curly hickory is sweet.
-
For our update:
We are officially out of the build window and into the grace period. Of the last three we have, two are pretty much ready to ship and mine is coming off the form today. I hope to be rough-shaped and into the tillering process before bed tonight.
-
The curl shows up pretty good. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The finish coat is drying on mine. I need to make a string and find something to ship it in.
Dave.
-
I always like the curly

:wavey:

Moving along nicely, everything is where I want it to be now that I fixed my math. Running a little bit behind due to having to babysit the granddaughter Sunday and my wife's birthday Monday (almost forgot :scared: ). I will be shipping Tuesday when the Post Office reopens.

Finish sanding is my least favorite part of bow building...
-
Have to agree. But that makes the difference.
-
It’s a race to the finish line. Mine will be in the mail tonight or tomorrow afternoon at the latest.
Dave.

Just an update, we are 100% shipped! All three are still in transit, but should be arriving soon.
My victim should be expect a delivery Saturday. I apologize in advance, I wedged that sucker into an ABS tube and it's going to be a pain to get out of there. Sorry!
-
There should be a delivery today…
Dave.
-
Ups or USPS
USPS already run here.
-
USPS
-
Pfft still waiting here :dunno:
-
I just got a notification, my bow is out for delivery. 🙂
-
Okay got it just now shot a few thru it. Need to get the string fixed up then pics.
Okay when I get a little time I will U tube a few shoots. I love the way those veneers worked out. Nd the grip feels better than I thought it would. It points really good and seems pretty snappy but may need a heavier arrow to quite it a bit. 700s now maybe 600s be better.
-
USPS just emailed me. A bow has been delivered.
I hope it got there in one piece.
Dave.
-
Ok guys, post a pic of your bows and let's see them all in seccession.
-
I’m still waiting for mine… 😢🥹
Dave.
-
Went up to the garage and picked up a suspicious looking piece of rain gutter downspout. Got it opened up and everything is in one piece, and more importantly, looking beautiful! Back in a while, time to go play!
Dave, this is quite the beautiful bow you have built. Color combos are awesome and the grip feels great. I can't wait to spend some time outside shooting it here in a few minutes.
Dave was also kind enough to include a bow sock and three beautifully carved game calls! I will have to learn how to use them, but I don't think it will take long with these fine pieces. Back in a bit!
-
She made it in one piece!!! Woo hoo!!!
Dave.
-
Phewwww.....I was sweating it would get there. Did the string survive as well?

The bow arrived this morning as I was getting ready to go out. It’s a beauty. The curly hickory goes great with the bocote and it feels good in my hand.
I’ll get some arrows through it and take a couple of pictures this afternoon.
P.S. the string is good. 👍🏻
Thank you so much!
Dave.
-
10/10 received! Just need our last 3 full draw pictures and we can close this puppy out!
I will get mine done right now.

Here’s my new bow!

Without further ado, I present Dave's beautiful bow!
Quiet, dead in the hand, with a natural feeling. Dave's excellent craftsmanship is on full display with this bow. Fit and finish is top notch, wood and color choices complement each other well, and tasteful accents that call attention to the right places.
Now, this thing is a shooter for sure! I was able to put in two hours behind the bow yesterday before my wife came and dragged me inside to finish painting the house  I usually have to work very hard for groups like this, but this bow makes it easy and repeatable! It really is a pleasure to shoot, Dave.
Dave was also kind enough to include some beautifully carved game calls as well. I've been practicing with them a lot (think my dog is starting to hate me) and I will definitely put them to use.
Thank you Dave. This bow is beautiful and shoots like a dream. I can't wait to get it out to the range and show it off!
-
Nice! How about an unstrung profile? Later of course when you're allowed back out of the house.

With all posts finished, I officially declare the 2022 TradGang Bow Swap complete! Great job everyone, and a huge thank you for everything you put into this. It has been a pleasure running the swap again this year and that is 100% because of all of you.
As we close out another swap year, I would ask a favor of you. If you have any input on how this could be run better, or things I could do better, PLEASE let me know. You can post them here or PM me directly, either way I would like your feedback. If it's broke and I don't know, I can't fix it!
Thanks again to all who participated, supported, and cheered us on. I look forward to next year!
-
In my opinion, the only thing that the swap needs is a few more participants. Other than that, it was great.
Thank you Chris for running the swap.
Dave.
-
I would like to volunteer as another participant for next year. I should probably post a few pictures of the bows I’ve built separately for reference of worthiness.

Great swap! Thanks again for putting it on Chris.

Great job folks, and thanks to Chris for doing the real work!!

This is a basic misunderstanding of the point of the bow swap. While it's encouraged that participants have some basic experience, it's stated purpose is to encourage attempting new techniques and methods.
Probably need to look pretty far back in swap history to find that, but it's there.

You are always welcome to join! The only thing we ask is that you can produce a functional bow.

This is 100% correct! It is posted in the sign-up thread "agreement" every year. To roughly quote, the goal of the swap is not to score yourself a sweet bow. Rather, it is to challenge yourself to improve and build the best bow you possibly can. The idea behind the swap is to progress a bowyer's skill by encouraging them to leave their comfort zone. Everyone is welcome!
Edit: I went back and checked the sign-up. It's the first few sentences.

I've built about a dozen in the last year, some were destined for the burn pile before they went in the oven but for the sake of learning I kept going. I've since found what seems to be working for me but I'm always trying to improve and value critiques as part of the process of improving. Should have what I believe will be my best to date out of the form this evening, just letting it rest before filling the hose and letting it cook now.
