Has anyone used carbonized vertical laminated bamboo flooring for laminations? Does the heat treatment to carbonized the bamboo cause issues turning it into tapered laminations? Seem like the natural stuff isn’t being sold where I live.
-
Yep it’s good, I prefer the amber but can’t tell any difference in using .
-
Does the heat treatment to carbonized the bamboo go right through the entire piece of bamboo? Or is it a surface treatment like when you burn a finish on an axe handle with a propane torch.
-
Looks like all the way thru, not sure of the process...
-
Think it goes all the way thru. The stuff from Big Jim is not. Thinking the looks is the only difference.
-
Keep it simple, call it Amberboo and Naturalboo. Absolutely no difference. In performance. Just a color change. My amberboo flooring, color is through out. It's very hard finding vertical grain boo flooring. People got bored with it a few years ago. So it's not stocked at my Lumber liquidators flooring shop. JF

So if I’m planning to buy some for bow laminations I should maybe get a full 24sq ft box of it. The planks are 3 3/4 wide 5/8 thick and 37 inches long. The flooring place I’m getting it from said it’s leftovers. They apparently supplied the Orange Logo Big Box Hardware store with it for years. And it’s not being supplied anymore.

I bought this this morning from Amazon, last one.

I used to heat treat my bamboo flooring lams by dragging them across a buddy heat turned horizontal. Speed wise, just fast enough to produce a slight smoke and Amber color. Takes practice l, use scrap wood until you feel confident. I was told about this by Gary Sentman years ago. It did not go all the way thru only hardened the out side.

I am telling you guys Big Jim has the planks of vertical bamboo with no finish.

Is he selling the Higera Brand of stair treads and boards?
-
Not sure of the brand. The quality is good as the Northwest stuff was.

I believe Hiquera Hardwood isn't doing vertical bamboo flooring any more, i cant even find the stair tread material made by them either. Their website will not come up. Too bad... that was good stuff...
Big Jims stuff is too expensive after shipping for me..... I did notice a difference between the amber and natural stuff myself. the natural isnt as hard and has a different deflection rate too.
I'm playing with a different product right now myself from Cali bamboo.... i'll let you know what i think of it after i've tested it more. But so far ...so good..... Arlo

The shipping is too much. If I need bamboo I will call ahead and have Jim bring it to Tradfest or Cloverdale. :bigsmyl:

Supreme is another brand I bought. JF

How much does he bring you?
I asked him to bring me some to the classic and he said No

I'm going to keep that under my hat for now until i've done all my testing on different limb designs.... Once i've done that i'll be glad to share it with you. Arlo

I only got six boards the last time.

Hard to find now 🤔Maybe that's why I bought a few cases of vertical grain bamboo flooring a few years ago. I use it now and then. Not really a favorite for limbcore. But I keep it on hand for every now and then. JF. JF

I have a bunch left over that i only use for prototyping beacuse its "Cheap" .... Ive had flooring from Higuera, northwest, and an "architectural grade"
Ive had a couple failures and dont trust it in my deep core Hills- Maybe if I laminate thin strips like actionwood with smooth on and resaw-Maybe....Nothing beats natural bamboo though especially if its tempered.
