Copying Kenny Topic, kind of
It's a glass copy of a Korean Horn Bow
48/50" NTN--- 1-1/2" wide
Butt load of reflex , hope she ain’t too squirrelly
I will be using Stable Kore under the back glass
(https://i.imgur.com/eWsjyuf.jpg)
Going top less, James gave me some Mule tape and a form tracing
(https://i.imgur.com/A6ZYG1w.jpg)
The main riser is 5/8" thick, it will have over and under lays on it to make it thicker
(https://i.imgur.com/orpnvWi.jpg)
Got all the steel pins cut and on the form

Cool!
-
Ya might want stablecore x2
-
Or some hex.
-
Good luck, Max! Korean hornbows can be squirrely; I hope your version isn't too bad...
I made a glass copy of a 48" NTN Scythian once upon a time. Worked great except when it randomly decided to turn itself inside out upon release!
-
Looking forward to watching this come together!

James said it would be a test for me :banghead:
-
Here's hoping you pass the test with flying colors!
-
I think you can do it no prob!
-
Max what diameter are your pins and how far apart are thay ?
-
Butt Load of Reflex?? Is that a technical term?? :)
Love it... Best of Luck on this endeavor... I appreciate your appetite to reach out and do different stuff...
-
Mark, I've seen and shot a few similar bows that James built and I must say they were quite fast. At least it should be pretty stable unlike most Asiatic horn bows that you have to keep tweaking due to heat and humidity.
-
How long this gonna take?

-
Now Roy, ya gotta give him some time with his shortie... :biglaugh:
-
Yes, a shortie can easily turn into a longie. Will follow this one Max.
-
Don't give him too much time on his shorty. :bigsmyl: I've heard it can make you go blind. :o
-
Roy says he stopped when he needed glasses...
-
Max what diameter are your pins and how far apart are thay ?
1/2" pins, for a long bow 2-1/2" apart
The first 6 from the middle are 2" apart then they get closer, I went overboard there on the recurve ends.
Thanks Guy's

Yeah, I'm just stupid like that :bigsmyl:

Thanks Max

Butt Load of Reflex?? Is that a technical term?? :)
Yep -- that's the technically correct Korean term for "more than 6" of reflex"! :biglaugh:

I thought that was a measurement for the amount of energy expelled trying to get a string on???
-
I think it's 9" of reflex :o

He showed me at least 6 Glass replicas of horn bows he has made.
He is using a thumb ring to draw.
Long levers on this one

You will probably need a bracing jig to safely brace a bow like this.
-
I'm asshamed to say I didn't think James was still in the land of the living. I've admired his 'glass traditional bow replics for years. Does he have a website? Contact information?
-
His son is working on a new wed sight.
He worked for big Jim a couple years ago for about a year

My form is good and straight from end to end and the profile is square to the sides.
I used 2 pieces of Ram board (for protecting new floors under construction) from lowes to make the form closer to 1-1/2" wide. Shredd use it too. here is a link
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Ram-Board-Paper-3-ft-x-100-ft-Drop-Cloth/999909879
I have standards (for checking your Micrometers for accuracy ) from when I did Tool and Die work so I use the tools I have on hand.
This is 2 pieces =.750 thick
I push my glass threw these 2 blocks of wood while holding a 0.5mm mechanical pencil at the top of it to get a center line end to end.
I print my limb profile on 11" x 17" paper for all my high reflexed bows.
I cut little triangles so I can see the center line on the tape while I glue the template to the tape with wood glue.
I never have limb twist issues when I do it this way.
I got my lams sanded and the glass ready for glue up. and the stable kore
I drill a 1/4" hole threw the stack and riser and in the form also with a self centering jig, NO slipping around with the lams.

My glue is old so I need to order some from Kenny
So my glue up will be next week :dunno:
Waiting on Kenny :banghead:
-
Looking Good, Marky Mark...
-
-
Nope , waitin on the carrier pigeon ! He say 2 day out ...
-
I got my smooth-on epoxy today from Kenny
I brush on some wax, in and around the 1/4" hole in the form to keep the pin from sticking, use a heat gun to melt it.
Then I put some saran wrap over the form

All glued up and in the oven

Definitely an interesting project! So you string the rope over the air hose empty and then inflate?

This is my first time with a topless form and it work really good.
Not rope, Mule tape, no stretch
-
I am waiting to see what you do with the 1/4" pin in the center .

It's already done it's job, Just cut it off and add over and under lays
-
Mark, what width or pull weight tape are you using? I tried ski rope about 10 years ago and didn't like it. Hadn't heard of mule tape at that time...
-
James gave me this tape
Quote
"When pulling cable through conduit or innerduct, you have many options at your disposal; from using simple rope to elaborate contraptions using small animals and a trail of food (ok, I made that up). When presented with the problem of getting your cable through conduit, there are countless solutions but one stands above the rest: Neptco's MULETAPE. Found in a many varieties, each suited for a particular installation need."

-
Thank you sir!
Can you re use it ? I figure I'd get some glue on it! :biglaugh:
-
Use it over and over. You don't get glue on your fire hose
Saran wrap to keep glue off
-
HA , my fire hose has glue on it...
I get glue on everything. Most of my shirts have a dab of glue on right side of belly.
-
If you can find someone who works for a power company or an electrical contractor, you may be able to get mule tape for free. A lot of companies will only use it one time to pull wire then discard it.
They don’t want to run the risk of a break mid pull should there be a weak spot/abrasion from a previous wire pull.

Prolly made yer hose stiffer...
-
They have that much glue
-
I've been using paracord with good results. Not noticing any stretching. It's important to evacuate all air from the hose, strap down as tight as possible with the hose perfectly aligned centerwise the full length of the form.

Stickypops
LMAO
-
Seems to be a lot of concern about other folks hoses.
Back to the regularly scheduled program... :biglaugh:
-
Just be careful, ya don't wanna glue your hand to the hose...

I had to eat my Wheaties to brace this one, was going for #40 but it has to be over #50
Needs a little tiller and a longer string, First Brace at 6-1/2"
Riser needs to be shaped too.
-
Not bad tiller for first string. Do you tiller those pos, neg , or even? Get those wheaties down and lets shoot it!!
-
Negative, the shelf (finger) 2" up
Thanks Shredd
-
Looks good, Mark. Looking forward to seeing full draw and unbraced.
...and maybe shooting it at the Classic. :bigsmyl:
-
I will bring it to the Classic
I found out this morning from James the bow needs to be 1-1/8” wide.
That’s why its heavy :knothead:
-
Nice bow Max. You gonna shoot that shortie with a thumb release?
-
That should be fairly easy to remedy; belt sander or side grinder. :saywhat:
-
Yes shoot with a thumb ring :bigsmyl:
Pat I have a 6”x80” edge sander
-
May need a 16x80 for that one ! LOL
-
May need a 16x80 for that one ! LOL
:bigsmyl:
I measured the reflex the other day, over 11"
-
UNREAL !!! :o
-
Lookin' real good there, Max. I love these kinda bows a lot.
-
Thanks Ken
I like them too
-
How did you put the string on it ?
-
With a recurve stringer
-
With a recurve stringer
That's pretty manly, I would be using a peg board for that much reflex.
The side profile looks pretty awesome, I look forward to seeing the full draw pics and hearing how it shoots.
Mark
-
Mucho interesting.
-
Pretty cool Mark
-
Ditto wanting to see that shortie at full draw. A video of it being shot would be very cool too and one of the bow being braced would be fun too! :bigsmyl:
-
Tiller is even now
Needs a little tiller and round over all the wood and it will be finished.
Limbe are 1-1/8" wide now, the last 4" taper down to 5/8"
#37@28"

Riser is 1-1/2" thick in the center.

Just use a regular recurve stringer.
Hold the grip really good until the riser is above the tips when I string it. Easy
-
She's a beaut!
No shelf on that handle, right Max? Just shoot off the hand.
-
Looks good, Mark. Have you shot it yet?
-
That is an impressive bow! :clapper: Thanks for sharing the how-to.
-
Niiice... You da Man...
-
Looks good. Some severe bend to the inner part of the limbs like the horn bows.
-
Thanks guys
Finger shelf Ken
To busy working on it Pat
The Siyah's underlays have 2 groves for the 4" loop, on the endless loop string.
I spent more time on them than the rest of the bow so far.
-
Pretty cool looking bow. But looks like a time bomb :archer2:

Thanks Kenny

That sure is a looker, Max! Maybe I'll get you to make me one someday, without an arrow rest!
-
-
Max - would you mind telling us about the limb stack you used on this shortie? Thanks I’m really curious.
-
.175, parallel
-
Thanks. Such a cool bow and I like shorties. How about glass dimensions belly and back? Thinking of giving it a go sometime.
