Building a bow to paint and possibly use this fall if it shoots as good for me as my ol faithful.
Will be a 3 piece with hard maple riser laminated from 1/4” slices of flat grain from a really heavy board .
Gonna go with .0025” per inch taper and some streaky glass I put back from orders .
64” again but with a tip wedge 6” inside nocks of .060 to 0 instead of the super lam .
Here’s the start of her...
-
What's ya gonna paint it up wif? A camo paint job or solid color?
-
Saw a camo paint job on pow wow awhile back done with loofa sponges that was cool so gonna try it
-
I've stained BBO bows with a wash cloth and the little threads that stick up on it made cool little lines on the bow..
-
A regular kitchen sponge makes a good pattern maker. I use it on leather a lot. I made a belt recently using the method. I've also made stencils from leaves and bunches of leaves with spray paint on bows and tree stands. It works good.
-
Watching
-
Cool... I am Guessing it's gonna be a R/D bow???
-
yep d/r for me!!

Sponges? Wash rags? Loofa????
Just refreshed my browser. I thought I had ended up on a Martha Stewart site by accident. :biglaugh:
-
LOL Brad !!
I cut the pads to 12 degrees today , one was not zackly square with side of riser so hit it on the 6x80 a little til it was right
Then pulled out a self centering jig that I’ve had awhile and messed with it a bit
Got it drilling in center of a scrap block and drilled one end of riser perfectly!! Man this is great I thought.
Second end not quite perfect so I’m wondering if when I glued and clamped the 6 pcs of maple, I put different pressure on back and belly of riser or something.
I think it will work tho
-
Little change of plan , found some brown glass with damage enough I won’t sell it. One 040 and one 050, limbs are short nuff to cut damage out...
Now to decide to go with 040/040 or 050/030

-
Well it ya go 50 30 50 on the belly. :bigsmyl:
-
Yep , I haven't decided but if I go 50/30, it will def be 50 on belly!!
-
Ha! Another change in plan, remembered I had one pc of black .030 so its gonna be black and brown glass!!
Lams and wedges and tip wedges are made , glass taped up, ready to mix glue for it and the shortie...
-
Maybe I overlooked it,but what weight are you shooting for?
-
Guessing about 45@28
But using maple and not boo, more taper, tip wedge so :dunno:
-
First limb in oven with shorty
-
Here’s how I keep tip wedges in place without elaborate pin system . LOL
Notice the dots on lam edge for nock and 6” in for wedge
Then just apply glue and fold back on lam , tape holds wedge in place and acts as a hinge...
Just make the wedge plenty long and cut to get feathered end where you want it.
-
Kenny what kind of glue ???
-
Sorry ea40 and done at limb glue up
I wasn’t real clear on that
-
Are they still in the oven
-
2nd one is...
Don't you have somethin to glue together?

A little snaggle , with my drill jig the limbs didn’t line up so good so I drilled pin holes to 5/16” for the 1/4” pins . Put a pc of Saran Wrap over the pin on riser and as close to bolt as possible. Waxed the glass around the pin hole , slapped as much Ea 40 in hole as I figured it would take to fill around pin and put limbs on . Adjusted to center limbs over riser center and limb bolts and letting it set up. Hope it’s still a three piece ...

We have a saying. It’s not a f*#k up if ya can fix it.
Hope it works out for you.
-
Good idea. Hope you still have a three piece.
-
Hmm shoulda drilled all the way thru the limb and went to fastenal and got some 5/16 Dowell then overlay the limb. :biglaugh:
-
I reckon I could have but I don't care for overlays on limbs on a TD ... :dunno:
-
Well phoey :bigsmyl:
-
LOL that’s just me :biglaugh:
-
Limbs came right off! All good. Now to shape on em a bit...
-
Finally got to work on her some more.
Limbs mounted
Riser roughed in
Had to shoot it, seemed pretty good so I checked speed just for giggles.
47@28
Spare string off my hunting bow, one set of wool puffs, 2 tied on string nocks.
523 grain (11.12 gpp) 176 FPS
519 grain (11.04 gpp) 179 FPS
472 grain (10.06 gpp) 184 FPS
423 grain (9.00 gpp) 192 FPS
This was off a shooter, so prob deduct 4-5 for fingers
I'll take it tho!! :)
-
Nice... Great speed... I find it tough to get past that 184 mark with an R/D bow...
-
472 grain (10.06 gpp) 184 FPS
423 grain (9.00 gpp) 192 FPS
This was off a shooter, so prob deduct 4-5 for fingers
And deduct another 2-3 for a tight nock...
And another 2-4 for wrong spine...
And another 2-4 for bad form...
And another 1-2 just because...
That brings you down to about 167 to 169 FPS...
That bow sounds a little slow to me... You better start over...
You better off just saying that you used a shooting machine and leave it at that... :)
-
Okay now unstrung strung and FD pics.
That 10 gen. Speed pretty good.
-
Or maybe...
And add another 2-3 for a properly fitted nock...
And add another 2-4 for right spine...
And add another 2-4 for my precise form...
And add another 1-2 just because...

These arrows weren't tuned at all, just stuff I had to get weight close.
Mike I'll shoot some pics tomorrow . Maybe even a full draw... :biglaugh:
Oh, I'll be hunting with the 11+ grain ones, so I'm not too concerned with the speed anyway...
Now to shoot her for a bit and be sure the grip suits me completely before I
paint her...

those are good numbers Kenny 🏹👌
-
Hell Kenny... In that case you might have a world record... :biglaugh:
-
Hell Kenny... In that case you might have a word record... :biglaugh:
I'm way past worryin about any records...
I just want a decent performer that shoots nice.
-
Is this one a design you already had or something new?
-
Had it for a bit but only built a couple off it . A modified td . Added some reflex ...
Kinda expected it to be hard to shoot but it’s not .
-
Picturesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss :dunno:

The strait edge shows nock to nock and total reflex from back of bow
-
Maybe could go more reflex but at some point she will get torquey
-
Nice Kenny
-
Looks good to me.
A lot of reflex also can also result in Handshock and nervous Shooting.
-
If those limbs arnt floppy that looks good. How does it feel after the shoot?
-
Think you nailed it, Kenny. Good speed and well behaved! 👌
-
Shot it some outside in the snow, it will work !
About ready to paint, was gonna shoot it awhile first, but with paint, I can sand on it anytime and add a bit of paint!
-
Looks good
-
The hard maple riser surprised me , looks decent with clearcoat on it but still gettin camo paint.

Kenny how close to center did you go ?
-
Cut not quite a 1/32 from center.
-
Just before she turned gray...

Looks good Kenny. It’s got nice curve’s. Don’t get overspray on the John Deere
-
That would be serious on either tractor. Renee claims the 4020 as hers. :)
-
Well she's gray and has the first of the other colors added, it is gonna be kick-a ... er butt, in my opinion :goldtooth:
-
Not gonna add the white , think this is camo enough...

Better not lay that down in the woods, it’ll be lost! I like it!

Nice camo job, what did you use to put the colors on
-
Used a loofa shower sponge thingey. Worked pretty well seems like.
-
I am seeing two kinds of loofah. One looks like the plant cut off the other is kind of a wad of cloth. I expect you used the wad one ??
-
Yes, the synthetic wad of mesh stuff . $ general or wally has them
-
Man thats so cool looking
! :shaka:
-
You’re going to have to keep it on a lanyard so you don’t lose it.
It looks great.
Dave.
