How I started, must have been 11 or 12 years old. Indian Lemonwood bow and .35 arrows. Just plain fun, took me a year before I got one but I didn’t care. Miss those days
-
I'm not capable of doing that anymore, but it sure brought back some fond memories. :goldtooth: :archer:
-
That's some skill.

Thats our old friend Guru and his son Cade...He used to be around here a lot.

Dunno where they are but dang our rabbits seldom give us close slow shots like that. But that looks like lots of fun. Cool vid.

Brings back some great memories. Bunch of us would get together every weekend this time of year and chase rabbits. 30 years ago we were the odd bunch with longbows and recurves. Couple of stories. One big field we used to hunt was grown up in weeds and is now a shopping center, but we were in there with our bows one morning and couple of guys we didn’t know where on the other side with shotguns. Should have seen their faces when we came out with 4 rabbits and they had none.
Another time we had a couple new guys with us that were still compound guys. We had a rabbit come running down a hill past all of us. It came past every body and I was the last one. I rolled it with a perfect running shot and those guys could not believe it.

JLMBH Flashback!!!!! :archer:
Sure was a grand time every year!!
President's Day weekend, every year. We would all gather a Shawn Leonard's house in Selkirk, NY for the annual
"Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt" named after Shawn's mom. Sadly, about 2009 or 2010, It just got to be too big for Shawn and his wife Cindy to handle... Last hunt was about 96 people, if my old memory is correct...??
Damn it was one hell of a fun time!!!!!

Up here at this time of the year the rabbits are totally white except their eyes, nose and ear tips. You couldn’t see them if you stepped on one. We always hope for a really late snowfall, so they have turned white and don’t realize it.

Technically those aren't rabbits. They are snowshoe hares or varying hares. Tons of fun to run with beagles and decent table fare as well.

Oh, C'mon Gary!!!!
You're splitting "Hares" again!!
Sorry, Brother!! Couldn't resist.... :bigsmyl:

I had a very aggressive basset hound. she would retrieve out of water, she pointed two cock pheasants and they froze in place one day, (the day after pheasants season closed). She had one problem, the first thing she would do when we went hunting was poop in the car. Then after finding and running rabbits for hours and we would get back in the car, she would poop in the car again. The was very best hunting dog I ever had. It helps to be able to shoot fast and have a slow dog with rabbits.
-
Yeah man!!! There is some rabbit hunting on the bowhunters of Tradgang dvd also. I love small game footage, including frogs!!!

I'm trying to remember how many states I've rabbit hunted in... at least a half a dozen or more. This one was taken on an Illinois deer hunt.

I've killed a pile of these bad boys as well.

Almost any cottontail is more tender and tastier than those tough little Texas bastards.

Our own Rob D. with one of the tough Texas hoppers.

Man you guys are doing great! I can hit a 40lb pig in the heart at 15 paces but I cannot hit a rabbit in the head at 10. They are my nemesis.
-
Yeah Charly, you know what I'm talking about. :archer:

I wish I had more rabbits in my area, I have 2 beagles that love to run rabbits but I never shoot because too often already the dogs will work a patch of briars and turn up with nothing because the rabbits just aren’t here
-
Our place had a good population when we bought it. I understand rabbit populations are cyclic. But we also had a bumper crop of coyotes and bobcats. We've been working on the relentlessly for the last few years. We ate starting to see a few the last two years but I'm not at the point I'd take more than a couple.
This time of year I'll put out some alfalfa bales for the deer and the rabbits are always in it too. But it's hard to afford the amount needed across 270 acres.
-
My main problem is a neighbor lady who has 30 plus (probably more now since she collects any stray she comes across) cats that she lets roam free, people have no idea how destructive cats are to small wildlife
-
Yes sir. They don't survive around our place. Too hard on quail, song birds, etc.
-
Kind of hard finding them with all the coyotes this year [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Need a good dog.

Don't know how he did it but he caught this one on his own.

Last weekend in southern Minnesota.
