This one may be for a kiddo, 30@28, stacks after 29
52” NTN, one taper at .001 and 2 veneers
Scrap together riser, so so curly maple veneers, hard maple taper
Drawn to 28"
-
Nice one.
-
I need to redo the form, after all it has one bow off it... LOL
Need to add a bit of reflex to give a bit more preload.
This one will go to a kid anyway. Being that short I didn't know exactly what to expect for weight. Didn't want an 80 # er
-
Bending good but about out of draw close to 90 degrees.
-
It went 29 but not 30 , but on this light a bow it may not show stack point it would have on a hunting weight. :saywhat:
-
Nice I’m digging it.
-
Looking good Kenny.
I originally built my shorty form with the intention of 52”, but got scared and ended up building a 54” off of it.
-
Good looking bow, Kenny. If you want someone to store that bow for you, I'd be happy to oblige -- I like 'em short and low weight!

I want to do a shortie one day. I shot a Supermag the other day and loved it!.
The guy had a 30" draw. I thought it was going to be horrible.
He collects Bear bows and he says they are his favorite for hunting.
He did say that he has let more go than he has kept in the 48" versions. He claims they are not all good and smooth like the one he has. When he runs across one like that he keeps it.
I only have a 27" draw, so works for me!
-
Drew out a new pattern and glued up a form blank today (while trying to finish the dang jewelry boxes I got talked into building) :banghead:
-

-
Kenny,
I would be interested in buying plans from you for a shortie! Post up the build if you dont mind.
Ken

Still developing the bow, sucks to build form after form, but you gotta get what you want. :saywhat: I'll give you a template whan I like the bow. Will wait to draw plans up til I'm satisfied... :)
-
Kenny... When making first-offs I like making three piece bows first... It gives you more options like changing limb angles using shims or different risers... You can use a topless form which is easy to make... The forms are easier to modify... After that you can convert the design to a one piece bow...
Just my two cents...

How long is the riser ?
May need to shorten it a bit for more draw length.

Or lengthen the bow!! :biglaugh:
It's 14", hate to make less sight window... :)

Well, cold arse snap is about over, jewelry boxes are done and gone, so will be back to this one this weekend I'm thinkin .
Hate to burn shop propane on nonprofit ventures...
My dust collector moves a lot of warm air outside when I run it. So I avoid it when it's 0 outside, because that's what replaces the warm air sucked out! :o
-
You could up grade to something like this, about 8/9 foot tall
James Parker setup

-
I had mine inside for a while but hated the noise...
-
I have no filter on mine. It goes thru the wall outside. The only time I really get anything outside is if the bin gets too full.

Butt load of reflex , hope she ain’t too squirrelly :biglaugh:
-
Crooked stic how are you collecting the dust , a cyclone ?

Kenny, what kind of glue do you use to glue up the blank? Looks good.
-
Been using Titebond 2 , no probs with it yet.
Notice the pc of masonite pressboard in there? I was out of the right thickness plywood to make it work so this is a scrapped together form. LOL
I just added a pc of black locust .075 to the face. My template had a void and the pattern bit bearing went in very slightly so I used bondo and still wasn't happy with it . So had a long pc of black locust in shop, sawed and sanded to .075 and put it on with contact cement.
Now feeling a bit fuzzy from fumes. May need another coat ...
-
Niiiice shape.
I love serious preload in bows.
Hope IT won't shock.
-
The riser will reduce the reflex by 1.75"
That's where I messed up on first form, didn't study my plan enough! :biglaugh:
-
James it is a 4 in. Dust deputy with a card board bin under heath. Amazing 95 percent of everything goes into it.
Kenny what riser length and forward taper. Don't think it will be to hyper.
-
Goin 14" again and .001 taper. No tip wedge on this one...

Watching this one closely.

Lookin good Kenny. My shorties use a .001 taper with no tip wedge as well. What max draw length are you looking to achieve?
-
I’m not sure , javaman says he has a 50” that goes 29” so I’m experimenting
-
50" with 29" draw may be built without taper.
My 50" Kids bow works up to 30" without hard stacking.
If you ignore the fingerpinch.
-
Finger pinch is inevitable ... :wavey:
-
I think you need a good amount of deflex and a short riser. Have not built a 50 yet but I am guessing a 13 in. Riser. My 13 in. Has .004 FT. A 56 in. Will go 31 and 58 in. 32
The trouble with short risers is steep belly ramps
-
Lookin good Kenny
-
In the easy bake oven now...
-
Didn't like profile off new form so took it apart and re routed it... :deadhorse:
-
Well phoey :biglaugh:
-
Glued up another one, will see if I like it... :dunno:
-
Nope, hate this one more than the last!
-
Pictures please :bigsmyl:

Nope, hate this one more than the last!😲🤔
-
Well phooey. Can't ya do nothen right
-
Can't do this one like I want...
And no pics of this turd...
-
We need pics, that way we don't make the same mistakes..
-
Not in shop this afternoon, will get a pic tomorrow if I can stand to look at it... :biglaugh:
-

Ditto... Unstrung, braced and 28"... :) please...
-
2 outta three ain’t bad but ain’t good enough
-
Maybe needs to go a bit more before the reflex starts for looks. Did you shoot it?
-
Not yet , I went from .001 taper to all parallel and that may be why it looks funky at brace .
-
Actually looking at full draw pic that would help there too to have the taper back in
-
Who's the old guy drawing the bow for you 🤔
-
Mike, he hangs around the shop a lot... :biglaugh:
-
Who's the old guy drawing the bow for you 🤔
Don’t you see the name right under his arm? That must be Big Jim? Sure got uglier since I last saw him!
-
Nah BigJim is taller and hairier... :biglaugh:
-
I was gonna say...not enough hair for Big Jim. :bigsmyl:
-
I'm at a loss for words to describe this.
Dude prolly doesn't even know his glasses and hat are on backwards:)
-
At least it matches the limb profile :biglaugh:
-
Ya it is out of tiller:)
-

Yup and the few words i's do know haint allowed here.
-
Well I put the bow swap bow on hold for a bit, bro is gonna turkey hunt from a blind and figured the shortie might be handy so did some shaping in it and shot it a bit and tested . Short limbs make horsepower ...

Full draw looks nice to me...
-
Full draw is nice but that braced profile I'm not sure of.
She's like a fun girlfriend , kinda fast but unstable...
Gonna be some pinch but I didn't really notice it. Told John he may need to shoot 2 fingers...
-
Short bows are a little finicky.
-
I would think that that is great arrow speed for such a short bow... Good job Kenny... I am with you on the looks at brace... Maybe you can go with a little less angle with the limbs coming off the riser and if you have to add an inch to the limbs...
-
Nice work Kenny
:o

To my selfbow builder's eye, it looks like it's bending too much in the handle. I know the handle is deflexed giving that appearance but the limbs being mostly straight at full draw and not opening up more makes it look like that to me. To my eye, a deflexed handle bow looks best with an arch of a circle tiller. Roy usually gets a good circular tiller at full draw on his R/D bows.
This is only an aesthetics view from a selfbow builder. The numbers show good performance.
-
I don't think it's bending thru the handle Pat, it has glass thru belly side under the grip overlay. I did a quick scientific check of the pics with a roll of tape like roy does but not as techy and don't think there is difference at brace and full draw... :biglaugh:
-
If it was bending thru the handle stuff would be pop in off it.
It would be cool if you put a built in lever on those tips. Just about 6 in. From the string grooves start a little kick back to about 3/4 in. I did it once by mistake. Kinda a tip wedge without the extra weight. Just stiffens that area some.
-
The overall shape of the full draw looks to me like a selfbow that is bending in the handle. I know it's a laminated deflexed handle. Like I said it's the aesthetic appearance of the full draw pic that just doesn't have a smooth look to me.
-
I think it's more of the design, Pat.
The tips don't come around like you and I are thinking of.
I guess it's ok:)
It's reflexed at the circle and the tips are way back, so the outer 3rd is working but not going to come around into a full arc.
Prolly why it's pretty fast..
I still guess it's ok:)
-
Thanks for the input, guys! I think I may build one more with .001 taper in limbs instead of parallels when I get time.
-
You been worken on your shortie for a long time:)
-
Yes, must call it a longie now.
-
lets not start the longie shortie thing again :biglaugh:
-

I believe you hit the nail on the head when you said "The numbers show good performance."
It is difficult to get that kinda speed out of r/d limbs... That speed tells me that those limbs are bending close to optimally, if they were not you would lose speed... Sometimes things are not what they appear to be... Because of that recurve throughout the whole limb at brace the limb may appear to be bending more or less in certain areas when it is not...
My 2cents...
-
Addition to my last post...
That's not to say that you could change the bend on the limb and possibly get a more aesthetically pleasing bend ( or something close to what you think it should bend like ) And gain even more speed... Anything is possible... You never know unless you try... Each design holds it's own secrets... But it is in my experience that 184 to 186 fps tells me that the limbs are bending pretty optimally and it is in my opinion that is a good rule of thumb to go by...
-
Was quite surprised at the performance truthfully , enough so that I may test it at a different chrono. It does seem really quick.
It will have to wait til after turkey season tho, bro took it home along with my blind that I despise to sit in. He has the patience to kill one and a pretty good plan to get it done. His other bow is 64" , so a "shortie" might be better than a " longie" ...
-
Actually if the string almost touched the belly (more reflex)might be better.
