Title: Arrow Shelf
Post by: bowsage1999 on January 19, 2022, 11:43:25 PM
Hello all, today I was shooting and my bear hair rest on my Sammick Sage finally gave out. It got worn down too much. However, after I pulled it off the bow I noticed on the riser itself on the shelf their is a crack in the bow. Is this common in Sammick Sages? This wouldn't/shouldnt be from shooting correct? I handle my bow very carefully and am not rough with it. I have only had it a month or so.

I've never heard of anyone else reporting this on a Samick Sage, so I don't think it's common.  I don't think it's anything you did either.  Things made out of wood sometimes have natural structural weaknesses that aren't obvious at first glance.  Why don't you send us a photo of the crack, and maybe someone might know how you could repair it?

Yep I got my neighbor sort of interested in longbows and recurves. He bought that he said the guy said it was just used for boy scouts. I was looking it over and found some cracks in it just like that. He sent it back and the guy made it right.

Doesn’t look like it will amount to much.

It's a defect, and if possible, I would return the bow to the seller for a refund, assuming it was not disclosed to you before the sale.  If that is not possible, then if it were me, I would just keep shooting it and hope for the best.  I'm not an expert, but one time I had a crack somewhat similar to that in a riser and the bowyer said it couldn't be repaired.  Whether it will get worse or not is beyond my pay grade.

Were it mine I would warm the bow and some thin wicking super glue and try to soak it into that crack.   :coffee:

I have one of those Lark White Feather risers. It developed a crack in the riser by the shelf. I saw one for sale that had multiple cracks so I wonder if the wood used is properly dried before they make risers? At least in my riser the wood is more for decoration. I use it with lite weight limbs so I am not worried. I also shoot off a raised rest so no worries. It’s a shame because any value to a bow or riser with anything like a crack is almost nil
