Title: Footed shafts?
Post by: Stone Knife on May 03, 2008, 12:17:00 PM
Now that I can make my own shafting out of square stock, I thought why not footed shafts. How do I cut the square stock so they can be joined together? and what is the best glue to use also how long should the footing be?

If your going to start with square stock the the two point splice is by far the easiest. taper the square four about 4" and cut your footings about 7 to 7 1/2" long and make a bandsaw cut down the middle around 4". You will need to place a small "C" clamp at the bottom of the cut so the foot does not splitout, then just push the two pieces together.  The glue will act as a lube.As to glue any good wood glue will work, I perfer Epoxy.

Wow Jim...you are making it sound easy. I have all the cedar you want if you ever want to try it for shafting. Let me know if you are looking for anything else to make into arrows...I have a virtual forrest that I have permission to harvest from.

ishiwannabe , I'm guessing that in New York, your cedar is Atlantic white cedar. To soft and weak for arrows, unfortunately.

There was a real good tutorial in one of the archery mags not real long ago, but I can't remember if it was Primitive Archer or Trad Bowhunter. Anybody know?
