Title: New Bows in 2022
Post by: Friend on January 02, 2022, 02:13:43 PM
Am continuously interested year after year in what bows will be new for me and for others. I always look forward with much anticipation
to a new experience and like to share in the anticipation of others.

I have a Black Widow Black & White Ebony PMA w/carbon limbs on order and is due to be delivered in February. The PMA model and the new BW carbon limbs will both be a new experience.

What 2022 new bow plans do others have?

Nothin wrong with a Black Hunter, shot a nice buck with my 40 lb. Black Hunter longbow this year.
I'm trying to decide between a Big Jim Thunder Child and a St. Patrick Lakes r/d Adventure

Years ago I had a G&L Mantis, sold it to a good friend who still has it!! The forms for that bow now belong to Droptine bows in North Georgia !! I think I want another, just in a lighter weight. We will see in the near future. Got some health issues right now !! Sierra Blanca has my interest also. Got a used one and it’s impressive !!

Looking forward to a new Java Man Elkheart!! I'm on the list and about 10 months out.
I already have 2 58" Elkhearts, after having tried many different bows they are the bow that fit me and allow me to shoot as well as I am able to.
As I age I have transitioned more & more each year from the trees to the ground, natural and fabric blinds. I've found myself wanting a slightly shorter bow in some situations and Mr. Coffey has announced the Elkeart Magnums. I'm looking forward to putting a 54 incher through it's paces in the near future...

Don't have plans for a new bow, but maybe some new limbs. I've been real fond of a samick discovery riser the past few months with carbon/foam limbs. I may splurge for some fancy schmancy cross carbon limbs and see what all the fuss is about :) And I may build myself a new longbow.

Only thing I will be getting is a new riser for my Primal Tech longbow. Right now I have one riser with one set of recurve limbs and two sets of longbow limbs. It’s a PITA when I go to 3D shoots switching limbs around for different rounds, so I’m getting a new riser and will just have 2 complete bows that way.

I’m fortunate to have great friend that has been building bows for many years (Ken Bullman, Hunting Badger, here on tradgang).  Ken got me back into traditional archery several years ago when he built me a takedown recurve.  Since then he built me a sweet little longbow as well.

Right now he is almost done building me TD longbow. I hope to have it ready for the Texas javelina hunt in February.  Ken uses KennyM’s bow designs.  I’m blessed to have such a talented craftsman as my best friend…not to mention that he just keeps feeding my archery addiction.

I’m currently on Steve Turay’s (Northern Mist) build list and I can’t decide what I want. I do have it narrowed down to either a Classic, Shelton, Whisper or Ramer. I have previously owned a classic but have never shot or owned a reverse handle longbow and am so undecided. Help! Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

I'll be rocking my Big River recurve, Big River D/R 21st Century clone longbow, along with some time with my MOAB and perhaps the St Jude - Kota "Badlands" Longbow.  Also, have a Bear Grizzly 58" that needs some attention.  Some many options!!!  No new bow(s) on the horizon, but the tried and true will do.

So I second guessed myself.  I'm going to go ahead and justvgetva second riser built along with the limbs.  I'm going to have my longbow limbs trimmed back a few pounds as well.  But ii figure during 3D season I'll just have the 45@27 RC limbs on one riser and the LB limbs on the other and not have to swap out between rounds or when practicing.
Then during season I will always have a set up that's identical (except DW) in case a bad thing happens on a hunt.

I can't believe I dropped the string (our version of "pulled the trigger") on another bow, so early in 2022!

I was perusing another site and discovered a LH version of the bow I wanted as a young teenager more than 50 years ago. I couldn't afford it then. It was a Wing Thunderbird. The black phenolic/micarta? one.

I bought it for $215 from the fellow on the BIG auction site who is selling off about 240 bows after years of collecting.  It is "only" 43# @28", so I'll be lucky to get 38 # out of it and my 26" draw.  However, I figure a couple bows like this may keep me shooting if God wills me a few more years.

This one has some use issues in the finish.  There was a beautiful one all gloss and pretty, pristine like the one 50 years ago. Alas, it was a RH bow. Another one I found in LH but it was 60# @28".

I'm going to be searching to see if I can get this bow prettied up a bit.

I won't have the bow until later in January, owner is out of town.  To get ready for this, does anyone know someone who does this kind of work?  Or is it easy enough to tackle DIY?
Thanks

Well…. ive got a 17” Bosen Horn riser with Bosen carbon foam limbs to make a 42# longbow coming as well as a 25” Sebastien Flute Barebow riser with 30# Akusta limbs to make a 68” bow. I’m pretty excited about them….

I shoot the same way Terry shoots, always have. And I have always done it withBlack Widows in the past, for the most part. After being really sick for the last few years, life has changed a little. I am getting ILF risers as I am now shooting 30-40#s trying to find my way again. I am pretty excited!

I have had a love relationship with my Toelke Pika for sometime now, so much so that I just received my newest Pika which is a takedown. I have looked at Greg Coffee’s Elkhart, and also his helms deep, which is a recurve. Maybe someone that has or had both a pika and one of Greg’s bows can chime in on their thoughts of both bows. I think the grips are very similar.

Well last week was the best new bow week in history for me.  It started out on Monday with the postman bringing a "new to me" excellent condition Wengerd Chamois longbow 64" 39#@28" Myrtle and Zircote.  This bow is flawless and a true work of art.
Then on Friday I received my Toelke 10X Whip from Dan.  62" 42#@28".  This bow has a micarta riser with cocobolo accents and exhibition grade cherry veneers. Month and quiet, just like all Toelkes.  I'm not into collecting bows, so I'm good for quite awhile.

“Bow” season for me begins as soon as deer season ends. Here are three that I just finished up and one in progress. All started since Christmas. Three are hickory staves cut from my woods last spring. One is from an Osage stave purchased at the Tennessee Classic. I’ve been experimenting with some dyes to get the color. “Silent Green” is simply Fiebings leather dye. “Scarlet O’Arrow” is colored with Keda Dye that comes as a powder and requires mixing. While I like the Fiebings for convenience (premixed and ready to go), I’m pleased with the results of either.  I typically finish with Tru-Oil and if the bow becomes a hunter, I’ll over-spray with a satin poly. Thanks
Reverse handles are king.  :shaka:
I LOVE the Sprague and the Ramer!

Box with a bow was waiting for me when I got home.  Got it partially put together, this Howatt TD definitely is not a Hatfield, or a MTD.  This also is not a T/D version of the Hunter, slimmer than that.  It is slim and light.  I'll get some pics of limb, riser, bow unstrung and strung.  Next to the MTD for a comparison. WOW!!!  I'm impressed.  With @60# at my draw I think this will be my old man bow.

Got the new bow the other day shoots really nice

47 lbs at my draw. 508 gr arrow 176fps. seems like a good solid setup

Carbon limbs. do like a stiff arrow but seem quiet and the G10 riser coupled with it make a solid no vibration bow

Finally finished one for myself. I was reluctant to post it because I feel guilty working on something for myself when I’m so far behind. But this bow has been in the works for over a year. I’d work on it an hour or two every month or so. Finally got it completed..  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

You shouldn't feel guilty bud.  You've had a truckload of stuff on your plate and still taking care of business.   You're doing great and that's a beautiful bow.  Congratulations.

I wasn’t really looking for adding anymore bows to my “Stable” of bows but then this came along and I just received it yesterday afternoon. It was made year I was born 59 years old this year.  Near new condition and a weight I can handle . It’s a Herters Match Hunter with caramel  glass (not the usual mustard color) or tan as it was called.

I received this in the mail this past Monday from Harvey Archery. It's a 60" Crowned Eagle that pulls 53#@28". The riser and back limb veneer are amboyna burl. The belly veneer is spalted bamboo and the limb core is bamboo. It has gemsbok horn overlays on the tips and back of the riser. Shoots very nice and quiet!

Have been quite enamored with is new PMA with carbon limbs. Have owned a PCH and two PSAs.

This PMA is easily my personal pick. The Jenkins grip and the carbon limbs are, however, significant factors in my attraction. The carbon limbs are actually very quiet.

Others have frequently commented on its silent nature. I am shooting 9 gpp arrow.

Felix
17 inches long/62” bow
Despite I have a long draw length Kirk crafted the limbs in order to keep a reasonable string angle at 32” DL
Here on the tiller tree @ 32” DL
That s significantly better than what I used to get on most of 64” (and even 66” for some of them)  hybrid bows

I have a Treadway  Black Swamp "Spook" bow I am waiting on. One of the woods I really love is ambrosia Maple with the worm holes and the figures that look like ghosts. We found the perfect piece that made nice bookmarked veneers with the ghost spooks and 2 worm holes side by side that look like eyes.

After I get that one, I do want one of Kirk's Sasquatch Takedowns with the full bridge back and hidden limb bolts.

Scored that one from the original owner on the Stickbow classifieds. Been trying to get my hands on a Korte for a while now and just haven't found what I'm looking for or have been beaten to the punch. Not this time. Bow is simply outstanding from the craftsmanship to the woods and last but not least how it shoots. Was finished in December of this year so it is relatively new. Woods are an incredible piece of Hawaiian Koa for the main riser, Wenge in the I beam, and Macassar Ebony for the veneers. Also has curly bubinga for the overlays on the front. It is actually a hair shorter than my 56" Grizzly from the way I'm measuring and needs a 52" string. It's actually more like 55" IMO but Richard marked it 54" so that's what I'll call it.

54 is what I would call the "sweet spot" for me on a hunting bow. Need to try a Pika and a Shrew still before I decide what I like the best but that Thunderchild is my first choice off the rack for a hunting bow so far.

Pics of new to me Howatt TD promised.  The disassembled bow.  Strung profile pic.  Limb butts with numbers, there is nothing on the riser.  All three DH Hunter, Howatt TD and Martin MTD.  I don't think Howatt ever sold TD bows, but made then for sale by other vendors.  Think this may have been an earlier prototype with #0030, and the way the one limb is shaved down.

I expect my 58" PAX Carbon in the next month.  I wanted to do it in the green G10, but Widow hasn't gotten around to offering that yet like they do the TD.  Something to do with G10 not liking to be bent or curved? Bummer, I think the extra weight would have been solid!

I like the cherry cores a lot. I like the whole bow a lot. First ASL, so I can't really compare to bamboo, but I think core wood choice matters a lot less than bowyer choice.

I was in Denver for the first time this past week and got a chance to see a lot of bows at RMS Gear; I don't know a lot of trad shooters shooting customs, so this was my first exposure to a wide variety of bows out there, particularly recurves. I own a Toelke and this Mist, and I have to say, both Steve's and Dan's bows are significantly better fit and finish than any of the bows I saw in RMS—in fact, I was severely underwhelmed by most of those bows. After getting a Mist and a Toelke, I think I would be extremely disappointed in most of those customs if I received one like them from a different bowyer. I've also got to handle Mike Treadway's bows a bit (he's a member of my club) and his are also a notch above those bows at RMS. I think I'm kind of ruined on top notch F&F now.

After visiting Steve Turay in Ramer Alabama  last year in July and a long wait, my brand new 68” Northern Mist Classic arrived today. Bolivian Rosewood riser. Tempered bamboo limb cores and cherry veneers with a slight dished grip 54# at 28”. (48 lbs at my draw length) What a beautiful bow and well worth the wait! A big shout out to Steve Turay for an outstanding bow! His customer service and attention to detail are second to none. Thank you Steve

Just received a Super Shrew II, 60" and pulls 44#@ 27" (according to my old Bear hand-held bow scale). It is the Siberian Tiger Shrew, black and white ebony. Spent a good bit of the afternoon tuning arrows and ended up with a500 spine Easton 6.5 and a 250-grain head for a total arrow weight of 500 grains. Gonna take it to a 3D on Sunday and give it a workout! Will post pics later on.

It’s 40# at my DL, but still flings a 12gpp arrow with authority!

A Lot of nice bows! Wasn’t expecting to get another one, but feller I know was wanting something else and I’d been wanting another one for years now. Made in ‘18 Black Widow PSA 2 no white or red phenolic. 60” 52@29 so about 54 at my draw. Been a while since I’ve had one over 50. I missed that! Lot more spunk.

I'm new to the trad gang and saved up for a whistler then go hit with an unexpected expense.  I know if I put it off again it's never going to happen, so ordered a Prairie Predator from Mike, 62" 48@29 1/2 with bocote and caramel brown glass.

I have some 300 spine carbons which are probably too stiff and some 400's that might work but I'd have to steal them from my kid.  I'll have to figure out everything else I'm going to need and acquire over winter.

In April I purchased 3 new to me longbows on the used market, locally from the same source. I'm a leftie, so that's a rare occurrence. I bought a Black Widow PL III 58# @ 28, a Harrison American Wolf 52# @ 28, and a Bighorn Custom Ramhunter 60# @ 28.

I sent the PL III back to Black Widow to reduce the draw weight by 3 to 4 lbs, re-tiller it, and have it refinished. It will come back to me as essentially a new custom bow.
