Title: Reaction to Leopard wood...
Post by: Appalachian Hillbilly on December 29, 2021, 09:32:37 PM
Got some Leopardwood to do some accents with in a riser.  Sanded and glued up some to get correct grain orientation. Wore respirator  while sanding...most of the time.

Got rash like poison oak in the creases of my forearms  and a few other areas...

If it does not go away...trip to the doc for some steroids...

That sucks. Have you tried an over the counter antihistamine like Benadryl, Sudafed, Reactine, etc.?

Sorry to hear that. It’s a problem with tropical woods mostly, although some of our woods can bother you as well, especially now that you have become sensitized. About three years ago, I first noticed that pau ferro was making me itch. More recently, I have been affected by sawdust to the point where I had to buy a powered air helmet. It was that or pretty much quit woodworking.
After a lifetime of working with wood, I thought that I was pretty much bullet proof in that respect.
Along with the respirator, you might want to start wearing long sleeves and taking care to clean up as soon as you’re done each day. It’s a problem that doesn’t go away once it starts. Part of the wonderful experience of getting old, I guess. It goes hand in hand with arthritis and back aches. ☹️
I’ve been thinking about buying a shop air cleaner to get the fine dust out of the air as well.
Dave.

I don't know if this will work in your case... When you wash use lots of soap and a wash rag... The rag cleans out the pores good... Works for poison ivy...

It's all that exotic, imported wood. No immunity to the foreign allergens. :goldtooth:
