I know this has been done to death but....
if I wanted to treat myself this year and order a custom bow which would be a good candidate?
1) KOTA KILL-UM
2) FOX-BREED
3)WHISPERSTIK MOJOSTIK
4)GREATNORTHERN GHOST
5) OTHERS?
Well lets really confuse you then.
Sheepeater Spirit or Obsidian
RER Arroyo
Black Swan Brushfire
Dryad Orion
Shrew
Etc etc
To many good bows to list. You should order 1 of each and then sell the ones you dont like!! :goldtooth:
Great idea, Tim. :D
Could I get a small loan. Pay you back as soon as I sell!!! :jumper:

Well, RER's sound good. Sheepeaters really don't do it for me tho.
If you aren't leaning in a particular direction, you're just as well to put names in a hat. Everyone has a favorite and every trad bow has a story.
WHISPERSTIK, AND Obsidian...and Acadian woods , and Liberty longbows!!!!
Hummingbird
Fedora
Firefly
Those are good, and I will add:
ACS CX
Schafer
WOAH BOYS! Alot of these bows are great I know, but absolutely waaaay out of my range.
50's style recurves are my pref. I forgot about Acadian woods.
Build your own,I guarantee it'll be one of your faves!! :D
The Acadian Woods is top notch, and you can't go wrong with a Whisperstik from JD Lund, either. He's a great guy to deal with and a real artist.
Add in Miami Valley. I just got one on a trade and it's a really nice bow. Limbs are bamboo with carbon and it shoots faster than it should at 53#@28. Not sure about contact info for the bowyer, since this was the first time I'd heard of it, but the work is top-notch.
Whispersticks are nice. You might want to check out Kohannah bows as well, same price range. I just got a Dryad Orion that I am tuning up and like so far.
Look west and get a Chek-mate; made in British Columbia. You will not find a better bow for the buck.
Tim
I'll second Check-Mate had a Deluxe Falcon a few years back a great bow for the money. Their Attila is nice too. It wouldn't hurt to check out Kohannah's 58" and 60" Kurves either. Bob makes a great bow for the buck. His 58"er smokes an arrow. One of the bows I sold and wish I didn't.Also Mark Horne's Mountain Bow.
FireFly, Navajo, Thunderstick, Whisperstick, Northern Mist, and Shrew...

Yup Ken, I was planning on doing exactly that, but also would like a well made custom.
Sounds like a super plan, can't have too many,eh?
I have a fox breed that I have had for 7 years cant say enough good things about it its the only bow I shoot I have more bows but its allways back to the breed :bigsmyl:
The Whisperstik option is a strong one. I actually picked a bow up from him at his house and he is a great guy to talk to and do business with. It really sounds like you have to get your hands on any and every bow in your price range and try them for yourself. I made the mistake of buying a Black Widow for my first keeper bow and have not truly liked any other make since. I havent tried them all either, not even close, not even the ones in the same price range as widows, but you get the idea. If you try to find a used bow (to keep the price down) from a reputable bowyer (one that gets praised on this site) then you probably cant go wrong. Try to shoot as many as you can.
3)WHISPERSTIK MOJOSTIK
Quinn Longhorn Classic.
Buying any bow without shooting it and getting a good take for it's feel and shooting characteristics is like marrying a mail order bride...you might get lucky. If you feel lucky, I would suggest buying a lottery ticket and forget an untried bow. (A bit over-the-top but very true.)
I have had several bows built for me in the past. I won't buy a bow now that I can't shoot first.
Toelke Whip,,,Frank
GRIFFIN
well I can only say the 2 that I have Shrew 54" & a selfbow I made
Well alot of good opinions here.....
To those that say shoot as many as possible before buying? That is sound advise, but difficult way over here in New Brunswick Canada.
Very few Canadian bowyers and even less within range of me. I may have to attend a Trad shoot or two this summer, and beg some shooters to try their bows. There are very few gatherings here as well. I think there may be one in Ontario, correct me if I'm wrong guys. That is still aways away.
Well carefully spent bucks on a decent used bow may be the only way for now to try one...if it don't fit, I can always sell it right?
What type of grip do ya like? That will really determine the bow ya want. RER makes great bows and Kevin will really work with ya on a grip ya want, more so than a lot of bowyers. I olove my RER bows. Shawn
sheepeater spirit
What about a Widow? If new is too expensive, look for a used one and if needed, get it refinished, it'll be like new.

Sounds like you've got it... two steps in the right direction. The only flaw in buying used bows is making yourself sell them! I hear too many stories about "wishin' I never sold that one" that I can't let any of mine go! Find a trad shoot and you'll find a bunch of good people that'll gladly let you give their bow a try. Good luck in your search!
I know Chek-mate has been mentioned. I beleive I have shot most the Chek-mate model bows and I would put the Crusader in a league by itself as far as Chek-mate. That bow shoots as good or better than any I own. Just my opinion.
The Ghost is the only one I've experienced, and it was downright spooky how well it shoots. My all time favorite recurve, so far.

I'm afraid even used widows are too costly for me.
I'm looking for between 3-400.00 maybe a bit more, but that's it with my budget!
Shaun, RER's look good. I may have to dig abit deeper.
Get a widow and work your way down through the rest till you find something you like...PR
EASTERNARCHER, of the 5 you list at the top of your thread, I like the Kota Kill-Um recurve. Amazing draw for a 60" recurve. At the very least, why don't you call Tim Finley on the phone and talk to him. Bob
Why not check out a JK Kanati ? You will save yourself a lot of money.
Ratgunner, KAnati bows? can't say I've heard of them.....
I paid 450 plus shipping for my Kota Kill-um and I'm shooting it very well.
Bacote with Birds-eye maple limbs.

I'm looking at getting another one around 55-57 lbs this fall or early next spring.
Others I'm considering are some of what you listed.
Fox Breed
GN Ghost
Josh
Horne or Morrison!!!
Bill
Ya might just want to take a look at Rose Oak bows. $500 can get ya a Tom Cat T/D.
My Wild Cat compares well with my other bows including Border Black Douglas, Wapiti, Cari-bow, SheepEater & others.
Worth a look. Good luck!
