Title: Arrows and arrowheads
Post by: stretch2 on October 02, 2021, 08:13:03 PM
Wanted to know what people thought making arrowheads from banding steel Plenty sharp but worry if they're heavy enough to penetrate. Going to use them for small game and I have tapered the shafts where they attach

From my experience with banding, I think that it will bend on a hard impact. I know that it will cut like a bugger, but will it hold an edge? Can it be hardened?
Dave.

Metal banding is pretty tough. They should work just fine for small game. How are the heads attached?

I believe quality banding is 1095 steel and most likely tempered and should hold a decent edge as long as its not overheated. Thats a lot of supposing :o

You must have tapered the shafts after this pic was taken?

the banding was the wider banding used for wood fence posts I want to say it almost inch and half wide, I did taper the shafts after I took the pic sorry should of specified and they where glued on to the shafts and feel solid. I can take some more pics of them if you guys want. this is the first time making these and I have learned some things that I will do different next time if they work.

How thick is the banding?

I would make them with a 'shaft-wide' tang and bind them in place as well as glue them.  For small game (smaller than badger/fox/coyote), I use blunts not points.

they do have a tang that goes down to that red line you see on the shafts. im not sure how thick the banding is I will have to see if I can find my caliper.

I would put a binding behind the point like sinew or fine, strong thread set in glue. If you don't bind them the back of the point can split the shaft on impact.
