Fixed yer pichers for ya...

I believe with tru-oil ya just scuff it up with steel wool to dull it a bit.

Nice looking bow ole timer.

I'm just applying the oil now. My thought is that I can do poly over that glass portion...

On bows I use 5 to 6 coats of Tru-Oil with a 0000 steel wool rub down between each coat and a quick spray of satin poly over that to cut the shine.

Don't know about the Tru oil, but that is a really fine looking bow  Kind of has a 1960"s style to it.
Very nice.

No point in putting true oil on the glass. If you're going to spray  over true oil, which I wouldn't. You will put a coat of clear on the glass when you spray the whole bow. I would only use the light gray scotch bright when scuffing true oil. Because the steel can get worked into the grain and then later on it will rust. JF

Good tip with the grey stuff.

No need to rush between your coats of true oil. You've worked a long time on a nice looking bow, so let it dry in between as it needs. We definitely want to see pictures when you're done, great job so far. JF

Cure time for Tru-Oil depends on the R/H. High humidity will cause slow curing. Generally 24 hours will be plenty per coat but in dry conditions you can do a couple of coats in 24 hours. Usually the first coat takes longer to cure but it's probably a thicker layer because it's filling the grain.
I'll have to try the Scotch Bright pads.

I use True Oil exclusively now,  I found out if you put it on sparingly, talking a drop on a T shirt rag and rub it in with a finger and just add enough with out over saturating, it will dry within 4 hours and you can apply again, yes high humidity will take a little longer. I can often get 4 coats in 1 day. It looks like not much happening until after 5 coats and then it starts to look like glass with additional coats, I usually do 8 coats takes about 5 min. a coat, totally done in a couple days.  I use a latex finger tip protector under rag to apply, there is no strong bad smell and no big clean up, I can do it in the house and yes I do apply it to the glass maybe 2 or 3 light coats after using 400 grit to just get the shine off. Applying it this way gets it into the pours deeply and really enhances the grain, even scratches  unless very deep won't mess with moisture penetration. If you try to rush it, over saturate it, it will take longer to dry and you will have to sand between coats. I rarely sand between coats unless I sometimes apply a little to much. Plenty of ways to dull the finish if you want I don't. Been doing it this way for years. JMHO

I have posted this before; open your bottle of Tru-oil this way, store the bottle upside down and the stuff will last for at least a year before getting gummy.

If you are spraying poly why not just use poly only why would you have to do the tru oil .
There was an thread about using truoil and armor-all it made a beautiful finish a friend tried it on a gun and was very please with it .

Correct me if I'm wrong but does the poly help with UV?

I've been using Tru-Oil for many years on shotguns and bows. The only reason I use spray satin poly is to cut the shine of the Tru-Oil. I only do a quick spray of the poly, that's all it needs. I prefer the Tru-Oil as a bow finish for the ease of use, ease of any repair and the protection it gives for my bows.
